Chapter 10
◎They came knocking◎
The only ways to make a lot of money quickly, besides those monopolized by higher authorities, are through criminal law. Furthermore, Lan Hua is an unregistered resident in this world; he has no legal status. Without status, he faces significant difficulties, and even a black market is ultimately inconvenient.
"What a hassle." Thinking about this, Lan Hua felt a throbbing headache. He was someone who hated trouble.
"Do you know where I can buy a ready-made identity?" Lan Hua asked Ji Yu. He didn't really have high hopes; it was just a casual question. Because neither Ji Yu nor her son were involved in these gray areas, whether in work or life.
"Forget it, let's just wait," he said.
"Wait for what?" Ji Yu asked, puzzled.
After spending the last few days with him, Ji Yu had learned that Lan Hua had no identity, or perhaps he didn't want to reveal it. After all, he had rescued Lan Hua from a life pod near a crashed spaceship. And spaceships were unaffordable for most people. Moreover, Lan Hua's spaceship didn't look like an ordinary one.
District 36 is a remote planet, and even the governor's mansion has few private spaceships.
"Waiting for someone to come to the door."
"Who is it? Is it my brother's relative?" Ji Yu was completely bewildered.
"Sigh." Lan Hua sighed softly. "I wish it were that person, but it's not." He even seriously considered whether he should pull off a big heist in this universe, hoping that Regas would find out about him and come looking for him. He hadn't found any information about Regas on the world's star network these past few days, unsure whether it was intentional or for some other reason.
“It should be your governor or the administrator in charge of this area,” Lan Hua explained. “A spaceship crash is no small matter. Although you saved me, the wreckage of the spaceship is still in the same place and will definitely be discovered. And after the investigation, they will naturally find out that you rescued someone in the spaceship’s escape pod.”
"Ah!" Ji Yu cried out in alarm, "Has someone already noticed us?"
Lan Hua nodded. "After I woke up, I found that someone was watching us." Lan Hua did not tell Ji Yu that Ji Yu might have been watched when she saved him.
If Lan Hua's guess is correct, the Dawn God should have already been sent to the relevant institutions for research. He discovered that the technological development of this world was actually lagging behind that of his own.
The "superhumans" of this world possess physical advantages due to foreign genes, and technology bridges the gap between ordinary people and these superhumans caused by these genes. However, due to the intentional or unintentional suppression by the "superhumans" who hold power, the technological development of this world lags behind that of Lan Hua's world. In the civilian sphere, the two universes appear indistinguishable, but in cutting-edge technology, especially weaponry and other hardware, a significant generational gap exists.
Lan Hua's Dawn God Black Hole Probe Ship was one of the most advanced ships in the Silver Empire, let alone in this universe where technology was several generations behind.
To prevent the theft of technological secrets, the Dawn God has a self-protection mechanism that will self-destruct its core control system once it is determined that the spacecraft is beyond repair. Therefore, even if someone obtains the wreckage, they cannot replicate the same spacecraft.
Since the laboratory can't figure it out, we should ask the people who came out of this spaceship.
"Are they here to arrest my brother?" Ji Yu asked worriedly.
"You silly boy, your first reaction is to worry about me." He said, ruffling Ji Yu's hair again. "Shouldn't you be upset that I've caused you trouble?"
“I saved my brother voluntarily, why should I blame you?” Ji Yu replied seriously.
"There really are people this foolish." Lan Hua chuckled. For Ji Yu's family, whether considering their financial situation or Lan Hua's status, rescuing him would be a hassle.
Ji Yu retorted seriously, "I'm not stupid." He seemed to want to explain something further, but was interrupted by a rapid knocking on the door.
"It seems they've arrived." Lan Hua's eyes held a meaningful look.
"Are you really alright?" Ji Yu asked anxiously.
"It's alright, go open the door," Lan Hua said.
After receiving an affirmative answer, Ji Yu walked towards the door. A group of people entered, and Ji Yu, who had never seen anything like it before, was so nervous he could barely move. But he mustered his courage and asked, "Who are you?" Only his slightly trembling voice betrayed his inner tension and unease.
The leader didn't make things difficult for him. He raised his hand, and the light screen displayed his identity: Captain of the 36th District Guard Team.
"Hello, sir..." Ji Yu stammered.
After showing his identification, the man did not speak to Ji Yu, but walked straight toward Lan Hua.
Ji Yu had never encountered anyone of this rank before. The highest-ranking official he had ever met was the mine manager in charge of their mining area. Their planet was District 36, so the rank of this guard captain was self-evident. Although intimidated by the guard captain's imposing aura, Ji Yu, still worried about Lan Hua, followed him.
"Our governor invites you to his residence for a visit," the leader of the group said.
Ji Yu thought they were there to arrest people, but they were so polite, which put him at ease.
"Aren't you going to introduce yourself?" Lan Hua said lazily.
“Kesell, captain of the 36th District Guard,” the man said. Before they arrived, they had already investigated the whole matter thoroughly, including the identity of the family and the details of the rescue.
This family were natives of the poorest mining area in District 36. The husband had died in a mining accident, leaving only the mother and son to struggle to make ends meet. There was nothing suspicious or noteworthy about their identities. They had come simply because of the person standing before them.
When this man's spaceship crashed in Sector 36, the sector's defense system gave no warning, even though his spaceship was more advanced than the most cutting-edge cruise ships in the central system. The laboratories couldn't extract any useful information about the ship either. And information about him personally was completely blank.
They secretly monitored this man, but aside from discovering his astonishing regenerative abilities, they gained no useful information. Moreover, they were certain that this man already knew they were watching him. Unsure of his true capabilities, they were extremely cautious in their interactions with him.
“Let’s go, let’s go see your governor.” Lan Hua stood up. “Perfect, it will save me a lot of trouble.”
"Brother." Ji Yu's voice was filled with worry as someone gently tugged at the hem of his shirt.
"Don't worry, I'll be fine. Don't fret," Lan Hua reassured her gently. "I'll come find you after I've dealt with this. Don't worry."
Lan Hua's relaxed demeanor made the guards, whom the public held in awe, look like a bodyguard squad. Lan Hua followed Kessel into the spaceship, glanced around the interior, said nothing, and simply found a seat.
"What's your name?" Kessel sat down next to him.
"Lan Hua." Lan Hua directly stated her real name, since her real name was also a form of information.
“This is the most advanced patrol ship in our Sector 36,” Kessel said.
"It's very backward," Lan Hua commented.
Kessel: "..." This guy is so direct. Has he never been beaten up for talking like that?
"Let's not beat around the bush. The most important reason you've brought me here is that you can't crack the technology of my crashed spaceship," Lan Hua said, arms crossed.
"We are just following orders. Lord Cheng Wenfei will explain the specifics to you."
"Cheng Wenfei?" The name itself suggests he's of ancient Chinese descent, as does Ji Yu and her son who saved him. However, this universe doesn't have an ancient Earth, yet it does have myths from different regions of that ancient Earth. This is because the ruling class, the "god-men," used these myths to prove the identities of those giant humanoid corpses, thus gilding their own status.
How interesting. Lan Hua lowered his eyes and smiled. He had been unable to find the original origin of humanity in this universe on the star network of this world. Even the people of this universe themselves couldn't say for sure, with various theories about their origin. He didn't know if it was truly impossible to verify or if it was being deliberately concealed.
"Lord Cheng Wenfei is the governor of District 36," Kessel explained.
"You haven't reported any information about me to the Central System, have you?" Lan Hua said with certainty. "Otherwise, it wouldn't be your governors coming to see me, but people from the Central System."
Kessel was about to speak when he was angered by what the man said next, even though it was the truth.
"After all, I've taken a look at the latest models of ships that your Federation has unveiled, and they're not that impressive."
Kessel: "..." Can I beat this guy up? He's so foul-mouthed. He felt his fist hardening, about to shatter his usual calm and composed persona.
Kessel slowly exhaled, deciding that no matter what this person said, he would pretend not to hear it.
Lan Hua remained silent, for he had gleaned the information he sought from Kessel's reaction. After all, being completely ignorant of the other party's situation before negotiations was a grave mistake. There was one more thing he needed to confirm upon meeting Cheng Wenfei.
The governor's residence in District 36 is located in the Alft district, but Kessel didn't take Lan Hua there; instead, he went to Cheng Wenfei's private residence. That's quite interesting.
When Lan Hua finally met Cheng Wenfei, his suspicions were confirmed – Cheng Wenfei was an ordinary person, not a "superhuman," and so were Kessel and the accompanying guards.
Cheng Wenfei was also secretly observing Lan Hua.
After investigating the crashed spaceship, he had someone secretly monitor the man before him, and then discovered that there were too many unknowns and mysteries surrounding him. Not to mention that the crashed spaceship was more advanced than the Federation's most advanced spaceship, this man's recovery speed was comparable to the Federation's most powerful genetically engineered humans, but so far, this man seemed to be a pure human, without the genes of those monsters.
