When it was time to sleep that night, Wang Bin arranged for everyone to sleep together, with Sister Liu and A Bao in the middle, while Officer Miao and the others slept on the sides.
Occasionally a light breeze blows by, and it feels quite cool on the skin.
Wang Bin felt uneasy, his mind preoccupied with thoughts, and he didn't fall asleep until almost midnight.
Company Commander Zhao set up sentries all around the area, and soldiers also patrolled quietly among the civilians from time to time to prevent theft or other bad things from happening at night while people were sleeping.
Of course, with them patrolling like this, some couples who wanted to make love couldn't, but some strong-willed people might like excitement.
For safety, Company Commander Zhao divided the soldiers into pairs, with the two soldiers at the bottom of the hillside chatting quietly as they patrolled.
Just then, one of the soldiers suddenly stopped and said in confusion, "Stop, what's that sound?"
Upon hearing this, another soldier quickly stopped and listened quietly.
"Okay, it seems there really is a sound!"
"Hmm, it sounds like the weeds rustling down below!"
"Cheer up! Let's go check it out!"
"Um!"
The two soldiers pulled the bolts, raised their rifles, and walked down. Soon they saw a large group of dark figures rushing towards them in the distance.
"It's a horde of zombies!"
"Fire a warning shot immediately!"
"Da da da!"
A burst of gunfire startled everyone who was fast asleep on the hillside.
In an instant, chaos erupted on the hillside as people ran around in panic, like headless flies.
"Get up!"
Upon hearing the gunshot, Wang Bin immediately stood up and quickly woke up the others.
Because Wang Bin had made arrangements beforehand, although everyone was very scared, they didn't panic too much. After quickly packing their luggage, they stood together holding hands, while Wang Bin and his men stood guard with guns around them.
Company Commander Zhao was very anxious to see the people in such a panic. Panic can spread, and their running around like this could disrupt his plans. In addition, he had to send some people to calm them down.
"Bang!"
"Don't run around! Stand in the middle!" Company Commander Zhao fired a shot into the air and shouted.
Company Commander Zhao's shot immediately calmed the panicked crowd, who gathered together under the guidance of the surrounding soldiers.
"Squad Leader Li, take your men down and see what's going on!"
"yes!"
"Squad Leader Wu, take your men and check other directions. The rest of you, keep watch!"
"yes!"
After making the arrangements, Company Commander Zhao immediately ordered someone to fire a flare down the hillside. As soon as the flare went up, everyone gasped in fright as a large, dark mass of zombies rushed up the hillside.
Wang Bin estimated that there were at least tens of thousands of zombies in sight, and he didn't know how many more were behind them. He knew that the hundred soldiers led by Company Commander Zhao were no match for so many zombies.
If there were enough ammunition and fortifications, they could probably hold out. But the soldiers don't have enough ammunition right now. They have dug a few trenches on the hillside, but that's not enough.
"Platoon Leader Li, take your men and hold off the zombies here. The rest of you, escort the civilians to safety!"
"yes!"
Platoon Leader Li received the order. He knew that staying meant certain death, but he did not back down. He strode forward and gave a military salute.
Company Commander Zhao and his men, their red-rimmed glasses slightly red, saluted excitedly at Platoon Leader Li and the others. Then, the soldiers in the platoon returned the salute with equally excited expressions.
"Everyone, about face!"
Platoon Leader Li released his hand and immediately ordered the first platoon to turn around and stop looking at the people behind them.
"Squad 1, follow me, hold the front! Squad 2, go to the left rear! Squad 3, go to the right rear! We absolutely cannot let a single zombie get past!"
"yes!"
Not a single soldier in the platoon retreated or showed any fear. Ever since the end of the world began, they had known that this day would come sooner or later.
Aren't they afraid of dying?
Fear is a fear that everyone experiences, but they are soldiers who bear the responsibility of protecting their country. Even knowing that they are doomed, they still strive to buy time for the civilians and comrades behind them to escape.
Seeing these determined soldiers trying to buy them some time to escape, the eyes of these hundreds of soldiers turned red, and some even cried quietly.
"What are you all standing there for? Get out of here!"
When Company Commander Zhao saw the villagers staring blankly at Platoon Leader Li and his men, he became anxious. His shout brought the villagers to their senses, and they followed the surrounding soldiers to run towards the other side of the mountain.
Let's go!
After looking at these lovely and respectable soldiers, Wang Bin led A Bao and the others to run with the main force towards the other side of the mountain. This was not their battlefield; staying would only increase casualties.
Soon, the first platoon was engaged in a firefight with the zombies. Gunfire erupted, and zombies fell one after another, but more zombies rushed up from behind.
At first, the soldiers were able to suppress the zombies due to their strong firepower, but as time went on, the soldiers ran out of bullets, and the zombies quickly rushed up to them.
After running out of bullets, the soldiers immediately mounted bayonets to snipe the zombies, while others yelled and charged into the zombie horde with grenades.
With a loud bang, the grenade exploded, blasting both the soldier and the zombie away.
The battle continued, but the gunfire grew weaker and weaker until it finally stopped.
Upon hearing no more gunshots, Company Commander Zhao felt as if his heart had been stabbed by a knife, and he gripped his gun tightly.
