Chapter 31
Qiao Yan pretended to have difficulty walking and "laboriously" changed the direction of her wheelchair.
Nan Ze couldn't hold back his anger at her disheveled appearance. She had used her pheromones to suppress him earlier, but now she was in this state, which made him feel incredibly smug.
"You came here just to tell me all this?" Qiao Yan still had that cold and distant expression, as if she didn't care about these things at all.
Even in such a sorry state, she still had to pretend to be so calm and composed. Nan Ze's anger flared up again. Qiao Yan should be like a drowning dog, dejected and utterly defeated, and then he should rush out and teach Nan Ya Yin a lesson.
His eyes caught sight of the wheelchair again. Oh, right, Qiao Yan is now a cripple. Well, calling him a cripple isn't quite right; a cripple can still walk a few steps. Now he's a one-legged immortal.
Nan Ze's mood improved considerably, and he took two more steps toward Qiao Yan.
"What expeditionary force, what valiant warriors? Without legs, they're just cripples. What's with the high-minded act?" Nanze patted his thigh. "No, no!"
Qiao Yan watched as Nan Ze berated her in front of her, as if watching a play. But he kept repeating the same two sentences, always using useless tricks to try and make her angry. Instead, she found the time she had been waiting for unbearable and was starting to feel sleepy.
She bent down and rubbed her temples. "Let's talk about something new."
Nan Ze opened his bloodshot eyes wide, determined to show her his power. He reached into his pocket and found a military knife, stroking the patterns on the scabbard.
Then he pulled it out suddenly and stabbed it hard into Qiao Yan's right leg, but the impact of the extremely hard object made his hand go numb.
"Tsk." Qiao Yan kicked Nan Ze away. "After performing for so long, I thought you could come up with something useful. How cowardly must the person who hired you to kill me be?"
She sighed and stood up. Nanze, who was half-sitting on the ground, looked at her with disbelief. "Your leg!"
Qiao Yan kicked Nan Ze squarely in the stomach, making him wince and lie on the ground, unable to speak clearly for a while.
"I wanted to lower your guard, but it still happened so quickly." Qiao Yan stepped on his wrist. "Who told you to come? If you don't tell me, I'll break your hand."
Nanze is an alcoholic and a gambler. When he runs out of money to gamble, he gets beaten up. When he gets beaten up, all he does is beg for mercy. The way he acted just now clearly shows that he was relying on someone else's power.
"Nobody, nobody!" Nanze shouted, the pain having sobered him up considerably.
"Trying to fool a child?"
Qiao Yan's toes barely touched the ground, but Nan Ze felt as if his arm was nailed to the floor.
Now he's shouting in a disheveled state, "I came here after being paid, I don't know who I am!"
"You took the money and you don't even know who it is?" She heard the sound of bones cracking softly in her wrist, and a howl immediately erupted in the room.
"It was a man who covered himself up completely, I don't know what he looks like!" Nanze shouted frantically, "I don't know who he is! I don't know! He said he would give me a large sum of money to kill you, you know, I gambled, I don't have the money to pay it back, I can't ask my son to pay it back!"
Qiao Yan's eyelids twitched. Nan Ze's shamelessness had reached a level of perfection. He could say such things while being tearful and earnest. Didn't he just call Nan Ya Yin a beast?
Just as she was about to kick again, she heard hurried footsteps outside. Qiao Yan kicked the person against the wall, picked up a gun from her wheelchair, and Nan Ze sobered up completely when he saw it.
Qiao Yan stood by the door waiting, but it was Nan Ya Yin who pushed the door open and rushed in.
Qiao Yan was startled and only had time to hide the gun behind his back.
"Why are you here?" Qiao Yan asked hurriedly. This place was too dangerous; there might be more than just Nan Ze who wanted to kill her.
Nan Yayin's eyes were slightly red. He felt heartbroken when he heard Qiao Yan's real voice. He quickly lowered his head and kicked Nan Ze.
"I can't come?" Nan Yayin gasped. "Who told me to be careful and to only act after I was sure I was safe? What are you doing? Aren't you just waiting for someone to come and beat you up?"
"I didn't, I won't be hit by him." Qiao Yan felt that these words sounded familiar, but that was all she could say for now.
Nan Yayin took two steps back. "What's the difference? You say one thing and do another. You don't even understand yourself. What's with all this talk about fate? You clearly don't care."
He spoke softly, his eyes welling up with tears, concealing his self-mockery and pain.
Qiao Yan wanted to go up and hug him, but Shu Juan suddenly appeared at the door and made eye contact with her.
“I’ve come at the wrong time,” she said awkwardly.
Nan Yayin wiped away her tears, "Let's play that recording for her."
Shu Juan was just trying to find a way to back down when she heard this, so she immediately turned on her terminal to play the recording.
Before Qiao Yan could figure out what was going on, she stepped forward and took Nan Yayin's hand, but he shook her off.
The recording was played, and apart from Nan Ze's cries of pain, the only other sound in the room was that angry voice. Qiao Yan immediately recognized the owner of that voice as Qu Song, who was in charge of mechanical maintenance in the team at the time.
The recording meant that there was no fuel leak at all, and the destruction of the airship was entirely caused by human error. After listening to it, Qiao Yan covered her mouth and chuckled silently.
She knew that, despite the numerous loopholes in what she had experienced, the events of that year, when pieced together, revealed no flaws whatsoever.
The spaceship, running out of fuel, suddenly exploded and was reduced to rubble, leaving no photographic or video evidence...
In a few years, she may have to give up on finding the truth, live her life in a daze, and carry the burden of everything.
Qiao Yan stepped on Nan Ze, "Where is the person who gave you the money?"
Nanze was confused as to why the blame had suddenly shifted to him. He twisted his body and said, "I don't know, he's the one who came to us!"
"You?" Qiao Yan narrowed his eyes. "Besides you, who else did he hire to kill me?"
“There are so many!” Nanze exclaimed, panting. “There are even people who sell your address for money! I was just unlucky; I should have known better than him and sold my address.”
He no longer had to endure such bullying. Nanze wanted to cry but had no tears, and all he could do was cry out in pain.
Sell her address for money? Qiao Yan couldn't help but recall the thug who came to her door with a knife in the middle of the night not long ago.
"Take him to the police station," Qiao Yan said to Shu Juan. "Is your car parked outside?"
"Yeah, what's wrong?" Shu Juan didn't want to talk to her now, afraid of getting into trouble. She had overheard something being said on the terminal while they were still in the old town. "You, you should watch your words."
Qiao Yan looked puzzled. "What did I say?"
Could it be because of Nan Ze? Although he is a complete scoundrel, he is still Nan Ya Yin's father, and beating his son against his father is a bit too much.
She glanced back at Nan Yayin, who was still standing there, and said, "I'll go into the car and wait for you. It's not safe here."
After saying that, she pulled out a gun from behind her and handed it to her, saying, "Be careful."
He then pulled Nan Yayin downstairs, struggling to break free from her grasp. "Let go."
"I won't let go." Qiao Yan held him firmly as they walked downstairs, only letting go when they both got into the hovercar.
"Why are you crying?" Qiao Yan cupped his face in her hands. "You were acting strange this morning, what happened?"
She looked left and right, trying to find some answer in that face, only to see those amber eyes shining in the moonlight.
Qiao Yan hurriedly wiped away his tears, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, is it because I said I'd be back soon?"
There are clearly reasons for all of this, such as not wanting to expose her position and not wanting to implicate him, but when she says it out loud, it sounds like an excuse, or as if she is the one who dragged him down.
"I'm sorry." Qiao Yan hugged him. "It will be over soon, very soon."
Nan Ya Yin only felt like she had stepped back into reality when she smelled her pheromones. "I don't want your apology. You're a liar. I don't believe you."
As he spoke, he wrapped his arms around Qiao Yan and buried his head in her neck. Warm tears streamed down her neck, half wetting her clothes, half slipping inside, soaking her heart.
Qiao Yan patted his back, "You must have been wronged to be crying like this. Don't hide it from me, tell me."
Nan Ya Yin looked up at her. She heard her say that Nan Ze's words were meaningless, so she didn't question whether Nan Shu Yin was his child. Did that mean that she herself was meaningless to him?
Unfortunately, he was recently horrified to discover that he liked Qiao Yan and couldn't bear to hear any indication that Qiao Yan had no feelings for him.
But he was so eager to know that he asked tremblingly, "Do you think Nan Shuyin is my child?"
He closed his eyes and awaited judgment, even his embrace became much weaker.
Qiao Yan found this absurd. "You mean, you got pregnant when you were 14?"
"Is that what I meant?!" Nan Ya Yin lifted her head from her embrace. "I'm asking you if you really believe Nan Ze's words!"
Qiao Yan then realized that Nan Ya Yin had overheard her conversation with Nan Ze during their confrontation, and she exclaimed in shock, "Of course I don't believe it!"
"Why don't you believe me!" Nan Yayin sniffed. "When Nan Shuyin first appeared, everyone there thought I gave birth to her, that I had a child while messing around at school. They all believed me, so why don't you?"
Qiao Yan opened her eyes wide, and even her normally dark eyes now had a glimmer of light.
"What? Do you want me to believe that?" Qiao Yan couldn't believe it. "Shuyin is only five years old now. Do you mean you'll have a child when you're 15?"
"What? Is that what you meant?" Nan Ya Yin chuckled. "You can even deduce my age, can't you?"
"Don't joke around, you only differentiated at 16," Qiao Yan pointed out.
"How do you know? What if I differentiate at 14?" Nan Yayin had no idea what she was arguing about.
Qiao Yan looked at him with some surprise, then decided to ask him in a different way, "So Shuyin is your child?"
Nan Ya Yin looked like she'd finally caught her red-handed, "Fine, so you believed me after all?"
She was caught in the middle, and Qiao Yan had no idea that Nan Ya Yin was capable of being unreasonable and argumentative.
"I don't believe it!" Qiao Yan said helplessly.
Why don't you believe me?
We've come full circle again!
Qiao Yan turned her head away. "Do you really want to know?"
Nan Ya Yin had stopped crying and asked aggressively, "You tell me."
"Because your glands weren't even bitten open." Qiao Yan didn't dare look at him closely. "You weren't marked at all, so how could you give birth?"
This is basic physiological knowledge. Others may not know it, but did Qiao Yanye, who accompanied him through his heat cycle, not know it?
For a moment, no one spoke in the car.
It wasn't until Shu Juan opened the car door that she said, "If no one calls the police, how will they come? I've been waiting here for nothing."
She looked at the two people in the car, smelled her friend's pheromones, and then slammed the door shut again.
