"Aoki, come on, wash your hands and eat!"
Jiang Yuan was reading in his study when he heard Ning's father's voice coming from downstairs.
He glanced at the photo of Ning Yanlan and Ning Zhengguo in police uniforms on the desk, and resisted the urge to take it. He hadn't come today to loot Ning Yanlan's photos; he needed to confirm her identity again.
"Master and Madam, please don't stand on ceremony. I'm just here for a simple home-cooked meal. I'm really not used to such a grand affair!" Jiang Yuan said with a wry smile as he looked at the table full of dishes.
"How can that be? You are the most important guest of the Ning family in recent years, we can't neglect you!"
Ning Zhengguo took out a bottle of high-end wine from the wine cabinet behind him, opened it without hesitation, and poured a glass for Jiang Yuan while laughing, "This whole table of dishes was cooked by your aunt herself. You know, she usually looks disgusted when I ask her to cook for me. Today, we're really lucky to have you here!"
"I knew you old man would talk bad about me behind my back. If other people didn't know, they would really think I don't cook for you and starve you every day!" Lan Ya walked out calmly, took off her apron and put it aside, and then sat down on the other side.
"Haha, I was just exaggerating, I wasn't trying to nitpick!" Ning Zhengguo quickly apologized.
Judging from his words and actions, Ning's father was also afraid of his wife.
"Uncle and Aunt, I apologize for disturbing you today!" Jiang Yuan felt a bit uneasy sitting there. Outside, Ning Zhengguo and Lan Ya were just outsiders, but sitting together, he always felt like he was meeting his father-in-law and mother-in-law.
"It's alright, it's usually just the two of us old folks eating, having more people makes it more lively!" Ning Zhengguo quickly waved his hand and said.
Upon hearing the topic brought up, Jiang Yuan first took a sip of wine, and then asked with feigned curiosity, "Actually, I don't quite understand why the Ning family recruits retainers instead of cultivating their own family members. That way, they would be both reliable and worry-free."
"Sigh, we wanted to, but the result was not satisfactory. Instead, we disappointed our parents, so we simply cut off contact with those relatives!" Ning Zhengguo shook his head helplessly.
"If I may ask, do you two not have any children?" Jiang Yuan paused after speaking, fearing that Ning Zheng would deny it directly, and continued, "I just saw a photo of a girl with your uncle in the study. Is she some kind of relative of the Ning family?"
Upon hearing this, Ning Zhengguo's eyes gradually became lifeless, eventually turning dejected. He didn't say a word, just silently drank glass after glass of wine.
Seeing this, Jiang Yuan had no choice but to raise his glass and toast Ning Zhengguo.
Finally, when he was slightly drunk, Ning Zhengguo showed signs of softening. He sighed leisurely and said, "That girl is my daughter!"
"Really? I remember Kui Mu called his uncle 'father' and 'dad'. Is this girl the same as Kui Mu?" Jiang Yuan put a piece of food on Ning Zhengguo's plate, and the two seemed to be becoming close friends despite their age difference as they drank.
"No, she is my biological daughter!"
When Ning Zhengguo talked about his biological daughter, a doting look slowly appeared in his eyes, an emotion that only close relatives would show. "It's our fault as parents. We didn't give her enough love when she was little, which caused her to have little affection for this family! Otherwise, she wouldn't have come back to sever ties with us a few years ago and then disappeared without a trace. The only way to see her is by looking at her photos!"
Jiang Yuan was shocked. Although Ning Zhengguo did not specify which year it was, he was certain that the one who broke off relations with Ning Zhengguo and the others was definitely the Companion God, because Ning Yanlan had already perished in Nancheng.
"No wonder I heard that the two elders sealed off a house; so that's why!" Jiang Yuan inadvertently revealed this information.
Unexpectedly, Ning Zhengguo shook his head and said bitterly, "We didn't seal that house off. My daughter did it herself after she came back. She didn't want anyone, including us, to touch anything of hers!"
"Uncle, what's your daughter's name? I feel like I've seen her before, she looks so familiar!" Jiang Yuan decided to take a risk and try to get information out of her.
"You really saw her?" Lan Ya became agitated and even sat down next to Jiang Yuan.
"I'm not sure either, but if I have more information, I might be able to recall some of my memories!" Jiang Yuan nodded hesitantly.
“My daughter’s name is Ning Yanlan. She graduated from the China Police Academy. So she’s 27 years old this year,” Lan Ya quickly said, providing some information.
"I think I vaguely remember it!"
Jiang Yuan seemed to be thinking about something, then asked, "When was the last time she went home?"
“One month after the establishment of the Apocalypse Era, we lost all contact with her!” Lan Ya said, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Oh, right, she left us some things when she cut ties with us, but we don't need any treasures. We just want our daughter to come home and live a happy life together!"
Lan Ya was about to take something out of her bosom when Jiang Yuan suddenly felt a sense of crisis.
Jiang Yuan's sense of crisis grew stronger and stronger. The source of all his sense of crisis was what Lan Ya was about to take out. He guessed that this was a backup plan left by the Companion God, which had now connected with his Heaven-Mending Soul, which was why he felt such a strong sense of crisis.
"Uncle and Aunt, it looks like my house is on fire. Please continue eating, I need to go back!"
Jiang Yuan suddenly stood up, startling Lan Ya so much that she didn't even take out the treasures she was carrying. He put down an unclaimed storage ring and said, "This is a gift for you two elders. I hope we'll meet again someday!"
Before Ning Zhengguo and Lan Ya could respond, he slipped away immediately after he finished speaking.
The reaction from the Soul of Mending Heaven was not something that Lan Ya could simply accept. If she continued to stay, the Companion God would definitely come and take his life within a minute. He knew very well that the Companion God would never allow someone who had slept with her to live in the world, even if it was just a wisp of her soul reincarnated into an incarnation.
