The Day When Fire and Brimstone Rained - Alvin Lyn Mendoza
Miyano Shiho huddled in the quilt. Although the weather in New York was not cold, she still couldn't control her shivering.
The young girl wrapped herself tightly in the quilt, trying to draw some sense of security from the warmth. She was separated from her family, studying alone in a foreign country without friends, facing discrimination because of her Asian ancestry, and being treated with inhumanity by her guardians. Each of these things was enough to destroy a child's heart.
Not to mention the organization that has been controlling the Miyano family.
She pricked up her ears, listening to the footsteps outside the door. Her heart rose to her throat as the sound became heavier and heavier. She stared helplessly at the elongated black shadow that came through the crack under the door.
"Shiho," the man's voice rang out, "are you asleep?"
I fell asleep. Miyano Shiho wanted to cover her head with the quilt and pretend that she was asleep, but, that was someone sent by that organization...
"What's going on?" Miyano Shiho took a deep breath and tried to appear calm. "Kelfer"
The man called "Kelver" seemed not to hear the resistance and continued to speak slowly, "You have a phone call."
Miyano Shiho was stunned for a moment. Although it was only nine o'clock, in order to avoid the members of the organization, she usually said that she had to go to bed early or go back to her room to study. There was usually nothing for her, a candidate member who was still in training, to do. Gin's guardian's attitude towards her was to let her live freely. Who would call her?
"I'll come right away." Although she was confused, Miyano Shiho didn't dare to neglect it. It had only been a week since the organization handed her over to Kelver. Maybe Gin had been too bad with her. The higher-ups were worried that someone who didn't understand children's mental health would wither the flowers before they even bore fruit, so they decided to try someone else. "Wait a minute."
Miyano Shiho put on her coat and trotted to open the door. Kelver was a relatively well-behaved person. At least he would knock on the door before entering a room, which won him some favor from the future Shirley.
The red-haired man has a pair of dark green eyes with dark circles under the eyes, which is almost a common standard for experimenters. However, his hair is thick enough to be tied into a small braid at the back of his head, which makes people doubt his ability. There are white highlights on the top of his hair. Although he said that it was natural, Miyano Shiho did not believe it. The round-frame glasses left a mark on the bridge of his nose, and the single cross earring on his left ear occasionally caused misunderstandings.
He saw Miyano Shiho finally coming out, and he put the phone directly to her ear. Before Miyano Shiho could ask clearly, the familiar voice on the phone attracted all her attention, "Moshimoshi, is that Shiho?" The call from the person who was closest to her in the world made the lonely little girl almost shed tears. She took the phone, suppressed her sobs and answered, "Yes, it's me, sister."
"Half an hour," the red man tapped his watch, calmly reminding the Miyano sisters who were still immersed in happiness, "Go sit in the living room and chat. Remember, someone is monitoring the conversation."
Although these words poured cold water on her, Miyano Shiho still couldn't suppress her cheerful steps. She followed Kelver to the living room and chatted happily with her sister.
Kelver casually flipped open a parenting magazine on the sofa, and seeing the girl's happy expression, a hint of relief flashed in his eyes, but he quickly returned to his previous expressionless face.
