Chapter 22 The Ever-Changing Gloves

Chapter 22 The Ever-Changing Gloves

Kun almost found out.

She Ning glanced at the bag she was carrying. The golden fried dough twists looked just like the real thing, but in reality, they were conjured by She Ning using the Transformation Gloves skill. The actual objects were small stones she had picked up from a corner.

Kun was very wary and didn't let his guard down at all just because the person who came was She Yaozu. He approached her with a smile, ostensibly asking what she had brought, but actually he wanted to check if she had taken anything she shouldn't have.

If he had just touched her, given his alertness, he would definitely have realized it was fake, and it would have been questionable whether She Ning could have left the scene.

He hasn't noticed yet that She Ning left the scene. Even if he realizes something is wrong later, it will be a matter between him and She Yaozu. It's like infighting among dogs, a good thing.

Looking at the storage compartment on the system interface, which she had obtained by bargaining with the system for five points, She Ning wished they would fight each other even more fiercely, because this storage compartment, which cost points, could store things from the outside world.

Inside the small compartment was a wooden box, neatly filled with all sorts of cultural relics: Tang tri-color pottery, blue and white porcelain, jade artifacts, and so on—all items from the room just now.

She Ning was 100% certain that after she left, Brother Kun would definitely go back to the room to check the wooden boxes, so she also did something to the contents of the boxes.

When she discovered the artifacts in the room, She Ning originally planned to report it to the police immediately after leaving the room. However, considering their previous conspiracy about railway-related matters, she was afraid of alerting the suspects, so she postponed her plan to report it to the police.

She has about twenty hours left after using the magic cloak today, which is more than enough to cover the time she has spent tracking them over the past two days.

The system refreshes the convenience store every 24 hours, allowing users to redeem new items. However, after redeeming the versatile gloves and storage compartment, her points are now truly zero, making the convenience store largely meaningless to her.

We still need to rely on the dwarven hammer as our weapon.

Using the magic cloak as cover, She Ning left the alley and found a secluded, deserted place. She reopened the system interface, and the icon for the Hundred Transformations Gloves was now grayed out. She Ning clicked on its description.

Versatile Gloves

Note: From the world of the Shapeshifting Witch, she can transform into anything, with a 100% resemblance.

Number of uses: 3 (Multiple transformations can coexist; a large-scale transformation counts as one).

Number of attempts remaining: 0

At the very bottom of the interface is a line of text: Duration: Twelve hours.

The system probably feared she wouldn't redeem the item if she saw this message, so the text was so small it was almost illegible. Little did it know that the timing was perfect for her.

Twelve hours later, the illusion disappeared, and all the artifacts in the room turned to stone.

Only Brother Kun was stationed in the courtyard, so he had to take the blame for this mess all by himself. Even if he could get rid of the blame, the responsibility for failing to keep watch would still fall on his head.

Teams that come together because of shared interests can also fall apart because of those same interests.

She Ning closed the comments on the Ever-Changing Gloves and instead opened the Dwarf Hammer. The comments on the interface were very simple and did not explain how to craft the weapon. It was another day of figuring it out on her own.

She took the dwarf hammer out of the storage compartment and examined it closely, finally noticing something interesting about the handle.

There were several inconspicuous grooves on the side of the rounded handle. Thinking that these might be material slots, She Ning tried to stick whatever she could find on the handle.

Half a brick, a bare tree branch, a rope, a rusty nail, a rubber band...

Her thinking was correct; finally, she realized that some item had triggered the switch, and the system's familiar mechanical sound rang out.

"Congratulations, host, on completing the slingshot crafting. You are hereby awarded 3 iron blocks, 4 pieces of wood, and 2 pieces of rope."

A slingshot made of solid wood appeared on the screen. The rubber band was strong and powerful. She Ning picked up a small stone from the ground, drew the bow, aimed at the abandoned earthen wall in the distance, and released it. With a "thud", a small hole appeared in the uneven earthen wall.

The small stone went straight through the wall. She Ning touched the edge of the hole and couldn't help but click her tongue in amazement. The speed and force with which the stone passed through would have been enough to cripple a person if it had hit them.

As expected of a dwarf, even an ordinary slingshot is extraordinary.

To be on the safe side and ensure sufficient firepower, She Ning also used the donated iron blocks, wood, and rope to make a portable crossbow.

After the weapon was finished, She Ning used her magic cloak to go to the town's junkyard.

Lin Yejun was tall and thin, and looked very refined. Unlike the various trendy clothes that She Yaozu often brought from Gangcheng, She Ning had been wearing a Zhongshan suit all day long. He was serious when he worked, and when no one came to the recycling station, he always had a book in his hand and was always reading.

His interpersonal relationships seem to be very simple. Usually, only She Yaozu comes to the station to play with him. The rest of the time, he goes to get off work and comes home, going back and forth between the recycling station and his home.

If She Ning hadn't stumbled upon She Yaozu talking to that Kun Ge today, she would have thought she had suspected the wrong person.

When She Ning arrived at the scrap metal recycling station, She Yaozu was still there, sitting in the courtyard eating, while Lin Yejun was sorting through the "scrap metal" that had just been delivered by the scrap metal truck.

"Uncle, this is so pretty, can I have it?" There were all sorts of things in the junk pile. A white thing shimmered in the sunlight. She Yaozu dropped the fried dough sticks he was holding and ran over to dig it out.

He wiped away the stains and held up the white object, speaking to Lin Yejun.

The jade cabbage-shaped ornament gleamed in the sunlight, and even though it was covered in dirt, it did not diminish its beauty.

Lin Yejun's expression turned slightly cold upon seeing this. She Yaozu, unaware of his uncle's change of expression, was still fiddling with the ornament, trying to find the best angle to view it.

Lin Yejun quickly regained his composure, walked over to She Yaozu, took the ornament directly, and placed it in the room on the left side of the courtyard.

He moved so fast that She Yaozu hadn't even had time to react before he came out of the room.

“Yaozu, these things belong to the recycling center, and each one is registered. You can’t just take them randomly.” He said earnestly to She Yaozu, who was looking at him. “If anything goes missing, you’ll have to pay for it yourself.”

She Yaozu didn't know the rules of the recycling station, so he believed him when he heard what he said. Although he liked the ornament, he just liked it because it looked nice. If he couldn't take it, so be it. He patted his slightly dusty hands, sat back down, and picked up the fried dough sticks to eat.

Seeing his behavior, Lin Yejun's eyes flashed with impatience, but he quickly reverted to his role as a loving uncle to his nephew.

He glanced at his watch, wiped his hands clean with a towel, and then took out two neatly folded one-yuan bills from his pocket.

"Yaozu, come here," he called out.

"It's getting late, you should go home soon. This is a reward of 2 yuan from your uncle. You worked hard today to bring things back from Ah Kun's place." Lin Yejun said gently as he handed him the money.

She Yaozu loved staying with his uncle the most. Not only did he get to eat and drink, and run errands for him, but he also received money rewards from time to time. Not to mention, his uncle often gave him money so he could take his brothers out for a good meal and drinks, which made him feel very prestigious.

"Thank you, Uncle."

She Yaozu happily left the recycling station with the money.

Lin Yejun stood in the courtyard, watching him walk around the corner and disappear from sight. His smiling face slowly lost its smile, and he turned around expressionlessly to continue sorting through the pile of scrap.

He divided the items in the junk pile into two categories: one was placed in the room where the cabbage ornament had been, and the other was thrown directly onto the junk pile on one side of the yard.

He stayed in the room for a long time. After coming out, he patted his clothes, carefully locked the door, and then sat on a stone bench under a big tree in the courtyard to read a book that looked quite old.

He reverted to his ordinary scholarly appearance. No wonder she couldn't find any flaws in him these past few days, given how well he could conceal himself.

After waiting for him for so many days, this was the first time She Ning had seen him change his attitude. It seemed that he was using She Yaozu, his nephew, more than loving him. She wondered if She Yaozu was aware of what he was doing for his dear uncle.

At five o'clock, Lin Yejun got off work on time.

After checking that all the doors and windows in the recycling station were closed, he took out his key, locked the main door, and then slowly walked home.

The most dangerous place is the safest place. No one would come to the scrap yard to steal things. Lin Yejun took this into consideration, which is why he dared to temporarily place the collected items in the recycling station.

Then we'll wait until the day after tomorrow to head to the railway and transport our things by train.

The recycling station has no shortage of broken glass. The top of the wall is covered with a dense ring of broken glass, and a large circle of thorns has been planted around the base of the wall in the yard, and now they have all climbed up the wall.

There were also many mousetraps in the yard.

No wonder Lin Yejun went home so confidently. After using the levitation function of her magic cloak to enter the courtyard, She Ning thought to herself, "Even if someone is really that stupid to come here to steal, with these anti-theft measures, they'd be lucky to escape with their lives."

She Ning floated to the room on the left. The lock on the door was a brass lock. Coincidentally, in her previous life, she liked to watch hands-on videos. She had dabbled in things like fixing water pipes, changing light bulbs, changing door locks, and fixing toilets. She had seen lock picking tutorial videos for this type of lock.

After unlocking the room with the wire, She Ning did not deactivate the magic cloak's equipment mode. Inside, the room was not filled with the things she had imagined.

A few ordinary pots and pans were scattered on the wooden shelf against the wall. Not to mention all the things that had been picked out later, even the cabbage ornament that She Yaozu had liked before was nowhere to be found in the room.

She Ning searched carefully, opening and checking everything in the cabinet, but found nothing.

It's obvious that this room contains a secret room or a cellar.

However, this room was just an ordinary, common room in modern times, with yellow mud brick walls and a square layout. You could tell at a glance where someone was hiding. There weren't many wooden shelves either. She Ning moved everything that could be moved, but found no traps.

She Ning found another stick and tapped the wall gently. The sound was even, ruling out the possibility of a secret room. She Ning then tapped the ground with the stick and listened carefully to the sounds coming from the ground.

"Thump, thump, thump," when you tap a certain spot, it's obvious that the sound it makes is different from the sound from other spots.
