Chapter 72 The Feather Duster
☆
In the ward
He threw everything around, smashing broken jars, showing no regard for his usual dignified and polite image, and roared and shouted.
"Damn bitch, damn school, damn old witch!"
"Apologize? Be placed on probation? Screw your pipe dream!"
"Aaaaaah! I'll make them pay!!!"
Just then, Lin Meiyu pushed open the door and came in. A plate grazed her face and fell against the wall.
She looked down and turned her head to the side, following the path the plate had taken when it fell. On the ground, the snow-white ceramic plate was shattered into several pieces.
A shard of glass flew onto her arm, slicing it open and drawing blood instantly.
Her gentle, smiling face instantly turned cold. She turned around, locked the door to the ward, and took a few steps forward, standing directly in front of Lin Hongwei.
Before Lin Hongwei could react, she raised her hand and exerted force.
"Slap,"
A crisp slap rang out loudly in the ward.
"Sister, why did you hit me?" Lin Hongwei cried out aggrievedly, his face bearing five finger marks, still a little dazed from the beating.
As the only grandson of the Lin family in this generation, Lin Hongwei was the apple of everyone's eye. His family wanted everything he wanted, and they never even laid a finger on him, let alone beat him.
Except for his sister.
"Are you awake now?" Lin Meiyu looked at Lin Hongwei calmly and said, "If you're not awake, I can help you wake up again."
There's absolutely no need for that.
He pressed the tip of his tongue against his slapped cheek; the touch was excruciatingly painful.
Upon hearing this, Lin Hongwei looked at her with lingering fear, and his body instinctively took a step back.
His sister really did hit him. Don't let her delicate appearance fool you; she was incredibly strong. In the past, when he caused trouble and mischief, Lin Meiyu would catch him and secretly beat him up. He had complained before, but the next time he would get beaten even harder. Later, he gave up struggling and just tried not to do anything bad so he would get beaten less.
She got married and had a niece in the past two years, so she's been less controlling of him, and he's started acting arrogantly again.
However, he was good at pretending in front of adults and was good at coaxing people. His family just thought he was a little temperamental. As he grew up, most of the elders at home and outside had very good opinions of him, saying that he was polite and had good grades.
In the compound, he was often the "other people's child".
"Sister, I didn't do anything, why did you hit me?" Lin Hongwei, hiding to the side away from Lin Meiyu, asked stubbornly.
"Didn't do anything? The No. 1 Middle School has already notified everyone!" Lin Meiyu pulled out a feather duster from somewhere behind her and went towards Lin Hongwei.
Lin Meiyu was ten years older than Lin Hongwei. Shortly after he was born, their mother passed away a few years later due to poor health. Lin Meiyu watched Lin Hongwei grow up from a young age.
Their father devoted himself to his work, especially after losing his wife; he practically lived at the factory.
For various reasons, the grandparents doted on the two siblings, giving them everything they wanted.
Lin Meiyu was already sensible at that time, in her teens, and knew what she should and shouldn't do. But Lin Hongwei was too young and spoiled, so he was arrogant and domineering.
The first time Lin Meiyu hit him was when Lin Hongwei bullied the neighbor's child and lied to him.
Later, when he did something wrong, Lin Meiyu would make him experience his sister's love.
Cornered in a corner with nowhere to escape, Lin Hongwei had no choice but to cleverly bury his head in the corner, leaving only his back and buttocks exposed.
Lin Meiyu showed no mercy, wielding the feather duster with great force, the blows echoing loudly as they struck him.
"Have you no shame? You even bully little girls."
"In order to win the competition, you not only stole other people's manuscripts, but also tore them up. In the end, you lost the competition and then acted like a scoundrel, refusing to admit your mistakes."
"Even now, with your hand broken, you still can't calm down. Instead of reflecting on your own actions, you blame others and even want to take revenge on the school and other people!" Lin Meiyu shouted as she hit and cursed. "Who gave you the guts!"
His face hurt, his hands hurt, his back hurt, his buttocks hurt. Lin Hongwei didn't dare to argue. He hid in the corner, trembling, his mind filled with his grandfather's words before he left: to find someone capable and attentive to take care of him.
Waaah, Grandpa isn't hiring people to take care of him, he's clearly trying to take his dog's life.
It's all his sister's fault; she's a master of disguise. Everyone in the family thinks she's gentle, considerate, and thoughtful.
"Do you know you're wrong?" she asked, stopping when she got tired of swinging the feather duster.
"Wrong." Lin Hongwei said softly, though he was outwardly convinced of the accusation.
Lin Meiyu could see his insincerity, but too much of a good thing is bad, and she couldn't push him too hard. She put down the feather duster and sat down by the hospital bed.
"Come here, let me help you apply the medicine," she called out, well-versed in the tactic of giving a stick followed by a sweet treat.
With his hands in a sling across his chest, his face swollen and red, and his whole body aching, Lin Hongwei approached with a pitiful expression.
"Sister, does Grandpa know?" Lin Hongwei asked, squinting as he tilted his head back to let her apply the medicine.
"What do you think?" Lin Meiyu glared at him irritably and applied the medicine with more pressure.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch, sis, be gentle!" Lin Hongwei cried out in pain, instinctively trying to dodge away, but before he could move, he was pulled back to sit down.
"It's good that you know it hurts. I think you don't want your hand anymore. The doctor told you to rest, but you keep causing trouble. Do you think it's not broken enough?" Lin Meiyu poked his head with her hand, her eyes flashing with heartache, and she softened her movements when applying the medicine.
"Does it still hurt?" she asked.
"It doesn't hurt much anymore, sister, don't worry. Grandpa invited a doctor from the province to come and check it out. He said it can be cured, and after recovery, you'll be no different from a normal person." After applying the family's black jade bone-healing ointment brought by the provincial doctor, Lin Hongwei felt much better, and his hands were no longer in as much pain as they had at the beginning.
I heard from others that the doctor is a top expert in orthopedics, and that if he says he can treat a patient, the patient will basically recover completely without any sequelae.
"Sister, can the school's punishment be rescinded?" After being beaten with a feather duster by Lin Meiyu, he calmed down, leaned closer to her, and asked tentatively.
With this punishment, how can he continue to work at No. 1 High School? He hasn't returned to school yet, and the punishment hasn't been announced; only he and his parents have been notified. He feels there's still room for maneuver.
"You wish! When you were bullying that young girl, did you ever think about the consequences?" Lin Meiyu poked him away with her finger and stood up.
“If you do something wrong, you have to take responsibility for it. Our Lin family doesn’t bully others. If you dare to go to your uncle, I’ll break your legs.” Turning around and putting away the ointment, she patted Lin Hongwei’s shoulder and warned him while looking at his legs.
She then comforted him, saying, "Take good care of yourself. Your brother-in-law has to go to work, and I have to go back to take care of Bao'er."
Lin Hongwei's little scheme was bluntly exposed. Without his uncle's connections in the Education Bureau to turn to for help, he slumped back onto the bed, utterly dejected.
He regretted it. If he had known that messing with the village girl would lead to this outcome, he would have stayed far away from her.
The more powerful they were then, the more miserable they are now.
She Ning was unaware that Lin Hongwei had regretted his decision; she was now focused on exchanging experiences with the braised food chefs at Judinglou Restaurant.
Lin Xinmiao, who had previously come to challenge the She family restaurant, sat obediently on a small stool, while She Ning and Lin Xinmiao's mother, Chen Tao, chatted enthusiastically in front of them about their cooking experiences.
His tall frame of over 1.8 meters sitting on the small stool looked quite out of place, especially since he couldn't understand much of what She Ning and the others were talking about. Bored, he looked around, and when he saw She Ni come back from get out of class, he ran straight to play with her.
Chen Tao looked at She Ning with admiration. Despite her young age, she had such a profound understanding of cooking and was humble and inquisitive. When Chen Tao was She Ning's age, she was still in the kitchen identifying spices and practicing her knife skills.
Meeting She Ning's eager gaze, she couldn't help but marvel at how formidable the younger generation was. Glancing at her son playing with the children out of the corner of her eye, she couldn't help but sigh.
People are indeed different.
Among the children in the family, Lin Xinmiao was the one who followed her into the kitchen from a young age. He loves cooking and has the heart to endure hardship and the action to work hard, but unfortunately he does lack some talent. After studying cooking for more than ten years, he can replicate the family's braised dishes according to the recipe, but he does not have the ability to innovate.
So, even after several years at Judinglou, he was still the second chef for braised dishes. Times are changing, people's tastes are changing, and dishes need to change accordingly. Without the ability to innovate and adapt, who knows what will happen to this child after she passes away?
Chen Tao looked outside the courtyard with some worry, and She Ning followed her gaze.
The tall and strong Lin Xinmiao led a group of children to play "Eagle Catches Chicks" outside. He, the tallest and biggest, played the role of the eagle, while She Ni, as the mother hen, spread her arms to block a bunch of chicks. The eagle played the role of breaking through from all directions, but in the end, they could not break through.
The children laughed heartily as they ran.
Looking at Lin Xinmiao's beaming face, Chen Tao looked away, shook her head with a smile, and said that children and grandchildren have their own blessings, so she didn't need to worry too much.
She Ning lowered her eyes, her fingertips tapping her knees.
After examining Chen Xinmiao, aside from his somewhat chauvinistic nature and straightforward temper, there weren't many other problems. His innovative ability was lacking, but his basic skills and ability to maintain the status quo were good.
There was a position in She Hongmei's grand business plan that would have been quite suitable for him, but seeing that Old Mrs. Chen had adjusted herself in a few moments, she didn't say anything more, and the two continued their discussion about braised food.
After this discussion, She Ning developed several more flavors of braised food. In addition to the previous mildly spicy, five-spice, and soy sauce flavors, she added sweet and spicy, numbing and spicy, rattan pepper, and pickled pepper flavors for other provinces.
Because the flavors were developed in collaboration with Mrs. Chen Tao, after discussing it with the family, they allocated some of the shares of these flavors to Mrs. Chen Tao.
The She family signed a contract with the cannery, which clearly stated that they would contribute the recipe and hold a 30% stake. For the newly added flavors, the She family would give 0.5% of their share to Old Mrs. Chen.
Chen Tao came to She Ning's house to discuss cooking skills because she liked her as a person, and also because her son had caused trouble at She's restaurant last time, and she came to apologize.
Faced with this sudden windfall, she naturally refused, since the main research and development still relied on She Ning, how could she have the face to accept it?
She Ning stated that without Grandma Chen's guidance and subsequent feedback and improvements, she would not have been able to develop it.
Finally, under strong persuasion from the She family, Chen Tao signed the contract, but 0.5 was too much, so she only asked for 0.1.
