Chapter 224 The Passing of a Fragrant Life

Upon hearing this, Master Liu finally reacted. He sighed and compromised, saying, "Enough said. I'll send someone to make arrangements first thing tomorrow morning."

The woman immediately wiped away her tears, revealing a half-smile, and said to the still-crying child in her arms:

"My poor Yao'er, you won't have to be startled awake so often anymore, you can finally get a good night's sleep!"

After saying that, she leaned her head on Master Liu's shoulder and said with a happy expression, "I don't ask for anything else. As long as you and Yao'er are well, I will be content."

Mr. Liu, who had been somewhat conflicted, immediately calmed down after being coaxed like this. He raised his arm and hugged the woman and child into his arms.

Shen Xingmian didn't listen any further. Given that woman's methods, Miss Liu's fate would most likely be to settle down in a country estate.

After his son stopped crying, Mr. Liu probably won't think about his troublesome daughter anymore.

Miss Liu's fate will probably be very bad, which can be considered atonement.

If you don't treat others as human beings, you will eventually suffer the same fate. It's quite a "cycle of cause and effect".

Shen Xingmian was not discovered by anyone. After leaving the Liu residence, she felt that the air was much fresher, and at least the oppressive and stuffy feeling dissipated immediately.

Actually, the people she most wanted to see on this trip were those three.

What she wanted to see was how good people lived positively, rather than how bad people suffered terribly.

Moreover, everything Ms. Liu is suffering now is entirely her own fault, and she has no one else to blame but herself.

It's practically impossible for Master Liu to have only one daughter all these years in such a wealthy ancient family, which shows that he genuinely loved her.

It's quite regrettable that it ended up like that.

After leaving the Liu residence, Shen Xingmian did not leave the city directly, but instead found an inn to stay in, intending to experience the way ordinary people travel.

The shopkeeper was very hospitable and even told her that there was hot water in the kitchen, and she could ask the waiter to fetch it if she needed it.

Shen Xingmian responded and went to her room.

Not too afraid of showing off her wealth, she booked the most expensive room, hoping to make herself as comfortable as possible. However, once inside, she found that the rooms were still too ordinary.

It was just ordinary furnishings, with everything you should have, but nothing superfluous. Shen Xingmian looked around but couldn't figure out what made her room so expensive.

She even suspected that the shopkeeper might have taken advantage of her being a young girl who didn't know the market rates, and tricked her into paying the most expensive rate for the most basic room.

But then I thought about it again and realized it wasn't really necessary. Expensive rooms are just sitting empty anyway, so why bother doing this?

However, the bed was very clean, and it was clear that the shopkeeper had taken care to clean it, so she didn't complain anymore.

The room was a bit cold. She lay down on the bed, but instead of feeling warm, she shivered from the cold.

After getting used to sleeping on a heated kang (traditional heated bed), sleeping on a bed without an electric blanket is just too painful, sob sob. I hope the weather will get warm soon.

Shen Xingmian lay down and closed her eyes for a long time, but she still couldn't fall asleep.

There was nothing she could do; she was chilly all over, and too lazy to ask someone to bring her a charcoal brazier. Even if they did, it wouldn't warm her up much, and she'd risk carbon monoxide poisoning.

Finally, she returned to her space and felt much better, though she was a little upset about the money she spent on the inn.

If I'd known it would be like this, I would have chosen the worst room. No, I might as well just run out of the city and return to my spatial dimension in the wilderness.

After practicing using her spatial abilities to pick fruit for half a day, Shen Xingmian finally collapsed onto the big bed and fell into a deep sleep.

The next morning, after eating and drinking her fill in the space, she packed her small bag and returned to her inn room.

After confirming that there were no signs of anyone having entered the room and that everything was normal, Shen Xingmian left the room and planned to go downstairs to check out.

Two people came out of the next room, yawning, and said, "The flames were soaring into the sky last night, it was really terrifying."

"That's right. I was worried that the fire would spread to our area. Fortunately, the fire was put out in the end. I heard that the surrounding houses were not affected, and only the inner courtyard of the Liu family mansion was burned."

Shen Xingmian: ?

Why is it the Liu family again? Are there a lot of people with the surname Liu in this town, or is it that the same family has had an accident again?

Driven by curiosity, Shen Xingmian stopped the two men and inquired:

"Brothers, is this the Liu family mansion you're talking about the one that was looking for a husband for its only daughter last year? How could it have caught fire?"

"Judging from her accent, the young lady must be from out of town. She even knows about the Liu family's search for a son-in-law. But that didn't work out in the end. For some reason, Miss Liu went crazy on her special day."

The shorter man sighed.

"Yeah, everyone thought it was strange at the time. My brother and I even wanted to give it a try. We weren't really planning to be selected, we were just there for fun. In a small place like ours, there's nothing unusual happening, hehe."

"Oh dear, I'm getting off topic. Speaking of yesterday's fire, I heard it was because of that crazy Miss Liu. One of the servants wasn't watching her, and she ran out, even into the kitchen. She grabbed the burning wood from the stove and started starting fires everywhere. Tsk tsk, I heard she was really mad!"

"They've even started setting fires in their own homes. How could they not be insane? It's pitiful for Mr. Liu; his daughter is in such a state that he only dared to bring the children back from outside..."

"Hey! Do you think it's possible that Miss Liu went even crazier because she saw her father had another child and knew she was going to be abandoned, and that's why she wanted to die together with him?"

The other person's eyes widened instantly, as if awakened by a comment from their companion, and they nodded excitedly:

"Hmm, I think that's quite possible! But whether she's crazy or not, a daughter who dares to set fire to her own home is probably not someone Mr. Liu can keep around."

Someone below chimed in, "What are you still waiting for? You don't know the latest news. Miss Liu has already perished in last night's fire!"

"Huh? When did this news come about? I didn't hear about it at all before I went to sleep."

"I heard this morning that the person was almost burned to a crisp, a blackened mess, barely recognizable as human. Such a delicate beauty, what a pity."

There was a chorus of boos from below; the crowd was clearly having a great time watching the drama unfold.

The two people walking ahead of Shen Xingmian gossiped as they descended the stairs. When they reached the bottom, the shorter man turned back and greeted Shen Xingmian.

"Oh dear, young lady, you have to be careful going out alone. Some people may seem normal, but they can be quite wicked. You're so pretty, you really need to be careful!"

If it weren't for his seemingly innocent nature, Shen Xingmian would have suspected he was doing it on purpose.
