Liu Ruying followed Chen Ya in a hurry, still worried in her heart whether it was a bit inappropriate to casually enter someone else's house like this.
The pale blue linen curtains by the window fluttered restlessly and looked a little dirty; the plastic tablecloth on the table was greasy and printed with the cartoon head of Snoopy; sharp white porcelain chips were scattered on the ground, which squeaked when stepped on.
This was an apartment room that you could see through at a glance. The woman was standing in the living room, gesturing at something violently and was very emotional.
The man was sitting on the ground by the wall at the corner, with broken porcelain pieces at his feet, and he was still wearing a yellow delivery man's uniform.
He looked to be about twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old, with a thin face and a prominent Adam's apple. His hands were placed on his knees, and there were thick calluses on his thumbs and palms.
"You're giving flowers to a girl behind my back, right? How dare you?" The woman's voice was torn and deafening in the small room.
The man said: "I'm not sending flowers to a woman. Today is her death anniversary. I'm just going to pay my respects."
"Is that the point? I'm saying, you bought flowers without spending any money?" the woman yelled. "You're not saving money to get married? Do you really want to get married? If not, go tell your mom you want to break up with me!"
The man frowned. "I'll give you all the money I earned this month. I'll save the money I spent on flowers by skipping two meals."
"If you can save it, why don't you pay more every month?"
Chen Ya and Liu Ruying were standing a little further inside the door. After hearing their conversation, Chen Ya suddenly remembered that today was indeed the anniversary of Xiao Cui's first love's death.
It was four years ago today when he suddenly received a text message on his phone. It contained only three short words:
"She's gone."
In fact, everyone has long known that Cui Yongyuan's girlfriend is dying. ALS is still an incurable disease that doctors around the world are struggling with today, let alone four years ago.
After Chen Ya said goodbye to Pei Hu and Xiao Cui, he gave each of them a sum of money. Pei Hu used the money to establish Yangchen, while Xiao Cui gave the money to the hospital.
Many years later, Yangchen Company became the industry leader, and its growth rate made this former South Vietnamese illegal immigrant stand out among a group of elite families and proud students of prestigious universities.
But Xiao Cui's girlfriend still left the world.
In this world, the industries that always make the most money are those that seek investment opportunities, such as lotteries and hospitals.
Chen Ya once told both of them that if they lost, it would be because of the two women they lost to, but the two of them were too obsessed and could not escape their own disaster.
Chen Ya looked up at the woman who was pointing at and scolding Xiao Cui. Her features seemed somewhat similar to Xiao Cui's first love.
He couldn't help but sigh heavily.
He pulled Liu Ruying out of the room and walked downstairs.
Liu Ruying looked at him curiously and asked, "Aren't you going to see your friend?"
"He probably doesn't want to meet me in this kind of situation," Chen Ya said. "Respect is earned, but protecting a friend's reputation is also important. That woman is ignorant, but I know how to do it."
He turned to Liu Ruying and said, "A man's dignity is not just vanity, it is also a source of strength. A man's knees are made of gold, not just talk. Therefore, a smart woman will always give her man face in front of outsiders."
Liu Ruying nodded, and she secretly memorized another piece of knowledge in her mind.
The two sat in a 24-hour convenience store outside the community. Chen Ya sent a text message to his friend. Half an hour later, the man in the delivery uniform appeared at the door of the store.
He stared at Chen Ya blankly, and tears suddenly came to his eyes.
"Brother Ya."
"Xiao Cui," Chen Ya said, "that's not what you said in the letter you wrote to me."
When Cui Lingfeng saw Chen Ya, he started crying while laughing. A grown man was crying.
However, Chen Ya did not cry loudly like in "A Better Tomorrow".
He just felt that as the best soldier of the 7th Reconnaissance Company of the former 49th Field Army, who had killed 7 Karkuo mercenaries alone and survived 8 assassination attempts alongside him, he should not have lived the life he was living now.
"Has Pei Hu looked for you in the past two years?" Chen Ya asked.
"He's contacted me several times, but I don't want to see him," Cui Lingfeng said. "My old friends don't want to see me like this..."
"You want to rot in a corner alone, right?" Chen Ya looked at him coldly.
"I……"
Cui Lingfeng was speechless.
"Compared to Pei Hu, I was originally more optimistic about you," Chen Ya said, "You have a better sense of self-esteem and are more kind. You deserve to succeed. This is not the life for you."
"Brother Ya, I have no chance." Xiao Cui said.
Chen Ya thought for a moment and asked, "Can you still drive?"
Cui Lingfeng's eyes darkened: "I lent my driver's license to my uncle, and he deducted all the points and revoked it."
"I'll give you half a month to pass the test," Chen Ya said. "You'd better come back and drive for me. I'll call you tomorrow. If you don't show up at the location I specify, I'll pretend you don't exist and I'll never see you again."
Cui Lingfeng was still sitting there, his eyes looking straight ahead, but Chen Ya had already pulled Liu Ruying away.
"Isn't it a bit cruel to say that about him?" Liu Ruying asked quietly after they left the store. "I don't think he's a bad person."
"When good people act foolishly, they're sometimes even more hateful than bad people," Chen Ya said. "A good person's weakness is like a premium purchase at a store; it's absolutely unnecessary and disgusting."
