"Thank you, mother-in-law. We were thirsty when we came in from outside the mountain." Gu An took the cup and drank it in one gulp, smiling with satisfaction.
"Grandma, there don't seem to be many young people in the village."
"The younger ones all go out to work and won't be back until the Lunar New Year. It's almost time."
"So all the children stay in the village?" Si Hong took the little girl from her and held her in her arms. The little girl was not afraid of strangers. She blinked and giggled.
The little boy was sensible and snuggled in his grandmother's arms a little restrainedly, staring at the guests without saying a word.
"Yeah, their parents are all at the construction site and don't have time to look after them, so they just leave it to me, an old woman. It's the same for every family."
"What about the child going to school?" Gu An frowned. Looking out from the main room, he could see a dilapidated house not far away that was suspected to be a school.
"In the first half of the year, there were two teachers who came to the village to teach the children, but they left two months ago." The aunt touched her grandson's head gently, with a helpless look on her face.
The small mountain village is 70 or 80 kilometers away from the nearest county town. It is simply not feasible for the elderly, weak, sick and disabled women to send their children to school in the town.
The conditions in the village are limited, there are few houses, and there has been no good solution to the problem of children's education.
"Grandma, we want to go to the school and take a look. We'll be back soon."
"Okay, okay. There are only three of us, grandparents and grandchildren, in this house right now. If you want to stay, there are two rooms on the second floor. One is for my son and daughter-in-law, and the other is unoccupied. I'll clean it up for you."
"Thank you, grandma."
"Little brother, would you please go with the teacher to see the school?" Gu An squatted down and gently squeezed the little boy's hand.
"Brother, go and show the teacher the way." The aunt encouraged.
The little boy returned to his usual playful self, broke free from Gu An's hand, and ran happily ahead like a chicken or duck out of a cage.
“Teacher, hurry up!”

[I'm crying my eyes out! If this dilapidated brick building in front of us is a school, we'd be so lucky!]
