Having fooled Xiu Kaijie, Lin Ranran felt exceptionally pleased; the mischievous boy had finally calmed down.
Lan Qingyue watched the play with a great sense of accomplishment. Lin Ranran, the drama queen mother, was one of her most satisfying roles.
The guests went back to rest, and Lan Qingyue also went back, so she took Lin Ranran and her son to look for a house along the way.
At 10 p.m., many villagers had already closed their doors, turned off their lights, and gone to rest. It was the busy farming season, so it was normal to rest at 9 or 10 p.m. The next day, some people might already be out working at 5 or 6 a.m. Lan Qingyue, who grew up in the countryside, knew this very well.
They were too embarrassed to knock on doors with the lights off and the doors closed. They chose a few houses where people were watching TV, but no one seemed very willing to receive strangers. The four of them, plus four staff members carrying cameras, made up a total of eight people. They walked along a country road, the sun lamps illuminating the surroundings and dispelling some of the fear of the night.
Arriving at a tiled house, where a sliver of light shone from inside, Lin Ranran decided to knock on the door.
Xiu Kaijie looked at the mud wall and the simplest unpainted wooden door and was so scared he almost cried. Was his mother going to live here?
Absolutely not!
He doesn't want to live in a tile-roofed house!
He held Lin Ranran's hand tightly.
Lin Ranran glanced at Xiu Kaijie, whose face was contorted with fear, in the sunlight of the sun lamp. She covered her mouth and chuckled, then patted Xiu Kaijie's shoulder and said with difficulty, "Son, you saw it too. Many of the villagers' houses are too small, and there aren't any extra rooms for us. So let's go ask this house. If this house doesn't agree either, we might have to sleep on the streets tonight. By the way, there's a street on the way here, and there's a basketball court at the corner, did you see it? It's spacious there. If we can't find a place to stay tonight, let's sleep on the floor there, okay?"
Lin Ranran was too mischievous, and Lan Qingyue had a hard time suppressing her laughter the whole way.
In the original novel, Lin Ranran has a good background. She married her childhood sweetheart, her first love. They were a perfect match and lived a life of extravagant spending. The only problem was that her son, Xiu Kaijie, was too naughty and didn't know what hardship was.
The couple decided to reform their son through various educational methods, such as taking him on trips to remote, desolate places, making him take a taxi to school by himself, and giving him only ten yuan a day as pocket money.
Xiu Kaijie had no desire to live such a "hard life," so he went to his grandparents' house every day, telling them how miserable he was, and his allowance increased dramatically.
Having no other choice, Lin Ranran decided to bring Xiu Kaijie to participate in this variety show so that he could stay away from his grandparents for a while. He couldn't even cry to his grandparents if he wanted to.
Chu Chu didn't understand the adults' sense of humor. Looking at Xiu Kaijie, who was secretly wiping away tears, she felt sorry for him. She leaned forward, reached out her hand to his head, and patted him. "Brother, don't cry~~~ How about Chu Chu shares her snacks with you tomorrow?"
Oh no, the snacks were "confiscated" by the production team, how are we going to distribute them?
Chu Chu blushed and snuggled into Lan Qingyue's arms, kicking her short legs a few times. Then she looked up, her little voice soft and sweet, "Brother, there are lots of big brothers and sisters here! When it gets light, they can play with you. How wonderful~~~"
Xiu Kaijie ignored Chu Chu, but Chu Chu wasn't upset and kept chattering away.
Lin Ranran went up and knocked on the door. She knocked three times, but no one answered. She knocked three more times, but still no one answered. Could it be that she and her daughter were really going to sleep on the floor tonight?
