Chapter 17

Mrs. Ran didn't let Ruan Bei take the bus. There were a bunch of luxury cars gathering dust in the garage, so there was no reason for her to let her child squeeze onto the bus.

The bodyguards of the Ran family also doubled as drivers. After all, they had to accompany Madam Ran when she went out in order to protect their employer. So Madam Ran simply asked a bodyguard to drive Ruan Bei home.

The person who received this task was a very young man. His features were somewhat similar to the cold and beautiful female bodyguard who had questioned Ruan Bei before. He introduced himself as his cousin.

The young bodyguard is named Yin Zhuo. On the surface, he is a cool guy in a black suit and big sunglasses, cold and taciturn, but behind the scenes he is gossipy and talkative.

He witnessed Ruan Bei returning his employer's ghost and was extremely curious. He couldn't ask in front of his employer, so on the way back, he kept asking Ruan Bei if he was a ghost hunter with the ability to see ghosts and if he took on apprentices.

Ruan Bei was both amused and exasperated. He himself didn't understand the situation and how he could possibly take on a disciple.

Fortunately, Yin Zhuo didn't mind. He was satisfied with Ruan Bei's story about the ghosts he had seen and even said that he could come to him if he needed anything in the future, as he was good at fighting but not at anything else.

Yin Zhuo has a straightforward and generous personality, yet he is also very tactful. Ruan Bei quite likes being around people like him, and the two exchanged contact information.

Because Yin Zhuo was driving him, it wasn't too late yet.

Ruan Bei remembered that there was a workbook recommended by his teacher, but he couldn't find it in the bookstores near the school, so he decided to go to the largest bookstore in the city to take a look.

So he asked Yin Zhuo to take him to the bookstore, and he could go home by himself after buying the books. It wasn't far from his home; it would only take about 20 minutes by bus.

Yin Zhuo smiled and tapped his backpack: "Aren't you afraid of getting robbed if you carry so much money on the bus?"

Ruan Bei casually tossed his backpack; it was heavier than before, but many people would be willing to bear this happy weight.

He didn't refuse the two bundles of pocket money in the end, and Mrs. Ran put the watch on his wrist. It didn't look good when he was tearing and pulling at it, so he accepted it with a blush. Then Mrs. Ran coaxed him to call her "Auntie" a few times.

Ruan Bei didn't take the bank card; he felt that this was already enough, so he decided to let it go.

Having given him pocket money and a gift, Madam Ran didn't dwell on it and let him go home.

"Who would know I have money in my bag?"

Ruan Bei didn't care much. From his appearance, he was just an ordinary high school student carrying a backpack to the bookstore. Who would touch his backpack for no reason?

I'm afraid even if a thief touches a sharp corner, he'll only think it's a book; he wouldn't steal a book, no matter what.

Yin Zhuo thought about it and agreed: "Then go buy the books, and I'll take you home after you're done."

"Need not."

Ruan Bei said, "It's very close by here, and the bus service is convenient. I'll go back by myself. Brother Zhuo, you go ahead and do your work."

He paused, then hesitated, "Besides, this car is too luxurious. If you drive me home and the neighbors see it, I won't know how to explain it..."

The Ran family is so wealthy that even their nanny's grocery shopping cart isn't cheap. They just randomly pick one to take Ruan Bei home, which is completely out of place in their old neighborhood.

"Okay, I'll head back now. Call me if you need anything."

Yin Zhuo dropped Ruan Bei off in the square outside the bookstore. As Ruan Bei walked, he sent a WeChat message to Dong Yangyang, asking if he had bought the workbook and if he wanted him to bring him a copy.

It's quite puzzling that next to the largest bookstore in Jincheng, there's a huge arcade. I have no idea how they got the building permit approved in the first place.

As Ruan Bei walked toward the entrance of the bookstore, several boys of similar age came out of the arcade with their arms around each other's shoulders. When Ruan Bei caught a glimpse of the red-haired boy being surrounded by his friends, he paused.

He knew that red-haired guy; to be precise, he knew him from a past life.

Hongmao is a rich second-generation heir who has made his fortune in recent years. His father, in order to build his future connections, put him in the private school that Ruanbei later transferred to.

Hongmao's family background is the worst in the school, and he is obsessed with getting into Lu Sibai's circle. He is usually very obsequious.

Of course, the reason why Lu Sibai's circle is so prestigious at school is not because of Lu Sibai, but because of Qin Shen.

The Lu family is considered first-class among the wealthy families in Jincheng, but not top-tier.

That's beside the point. Speaking of Red Hair, he's at most a younger brother of Lu Sibai's younger brother.

In Lu Sibai's words, everyone is a friend.

Ruan Bei didn't care about any of this, nor did he care how many "good friends" Lu Sibai had who admired him.

The reason I remember Red Hair is because of the disgusting things he did.

Red Hair was a lackey that everyone looked down on at school. Perhaps because his self-esteem was hurt at school, he especially liked to go to ordinary schools to recruit followers and flirt with girls.

The private school they attended was notorious for its high cost, with tuition fees alone leaving ordinary students speechless. Relying on the school's reputation, and given that Red Hair was indeed wealthier than the average student, a group of students who wanted to take advantage of him followed him, including quite a few delinquents.

He started by using money to lure people in, giving them gifts to bribe them, and finding pretty female students to be his girlfriends.

Later, he bullied and oppressed students, forced female students, and even led his gang to bully a girl.

The girl attempted suicide in a moment of despair, but fortunately her family noticed something was wrong and rushed her to the hospital, saving her life.

After that, the matter escalated, and it was only then that Ruan Bei and the others realized that the red-haired man who usually bowed and scraped to people and whose appearance they barely knew was actually such a despicable person.

The girl's family demanded an explanation, but the man with the red hair suppressed their demands and gave them a large sum of money. The girl's family then used the money to move to another city.

However, Red Hair was eventually dealt with. The young masters and ladies of the school felt that Red Hair had ruined the school's reputation and implicated them.

During that period, whenever you asked them where they studied, the next thing they would say was, "Oh, that teenage rapist."

Hongmao later transferred schools, and Ruanbei didn't know where he went. At that time, he was too busy taking care of himself to care about anything else, so he could only sigh for the little girl.

Finally, I heard news about Red Hair. I forget who mentioned it, but it said that Red Hair had offended someone and was severely punished; his family went bankrupt.

Upon seeing the red-haired man, those memories immediately surged back.

Ruan Bei felt disgusted and angry. Just then, Hong Mao received a phone call, and his arrogant laughter carried far: "Wait for me, I'm coming right away. The camera is ready. Let's have some fun, brothers."

Ruan Bei's face darkened, and he turned to the side to make a phone call, his eyes fixed on the conspicuous red hair.

After making the call, Ruan Bei followed Hong Mao and the others at a distance that was neither too close nor too far. With so many of them, they were a big target and he wasn't afraid of losing them.

After walking for about ten minutes, we saw a school in the distance; it was a junior high school.

Ruan Bei's face immediately turned even uglier.

Hongmao and his friends met up with another group of teenagers near the school. Among the new boys was a girl wearing a sailor-style short skirt.

The girl had her head down so her face couldn't be seen. She was short and slender, and several tall, burly, and shady-looking boys were pressing her shoulders and shoving her back and forth.

Ruan Bei gritted his teeth in anger, watching as they pushed the girl toward a secluded place. He quickly called Yin Zhuo again.

The Bluetooth headset I bought today came in handy. Luckily, Yin Zhuo hadn't gone far. I turned back as soon as I got his call, but it was difficult to turn around there, which caused the delay.

Ruan Bei didn't hang up the phone; he sent Yin Zhuo his location while following Hong Mao and the others.

They entered a small alley, their familiarity with the place suggesting they were quite experienced in such places.

Ruan Bei hesitated at the alley entrance. There were more than a dozen boys, many of whom were taller and stronger than him. If he went in now, he would just be delivering vegetables.

Just a moment later, shouts and curses came from the alley. Ruan Bei vaguely heard the red-haired man say, "Damn it, you dare to kick me... Hold him down... lift his skirt..."

In a moment of impulsiveness, Ruan Bei disregarded everything else and couldn't wait for Yin Zhuo. He took off his schoolbag and rushed inside.

His backpack contained a large umbrella, two bundles of RMB, and two books, which together were quite heavy.

Ruan Bei used his schoolbag as a weapon, carrying it and swinging it at the back of a thug who had his back to him.

The thug was staggered by the sudden attack, crashing headfirst into someone next to him and slamming into the wall along with his companion.

As soon as he stepped aside, Ruan Bei saw the scene inside.

A group of little beasts surrounded the girl, who was pinned to the ground. Her sailor uniform was torn to shreds, and her skirt was half-lifted.

"Beast!"

Ruan Bei's eyes instantly turned red, and he swung his schoolbag so hard it almost flew. This time, he held nothing back and smashed it directly into the faces of those bastards.

The heavy schoolbag made a whooshing sound, and one of the boys who couldn't dodge in time bumped into the corner of the book, breaking his nose and causing it to bleed profusely. This frightened the group of bullies who were only trying to intimidate the weak.

Before they could react, Ruan Bei rushed over, pulled the girl up, and tried to run away with her.

Red Hair realized what was happening, hid behind a group of his underlings, and shouted angrily, "What are you guys afraid of? This kid's all alone, let's take him down!"

Ruan Bei shielded the girl behind him, his only weapon being a schoolbag. Two fists can't fight four hands, let alone more than thirty. He was hit several times in just a few exchanges.

Just when he was at his wit's end, help finally arrived.

Yin Zhuo had previously said that he was good at fighting, and Ruan Bei did not doubt him. After all, if he wasn't good at fighting, he wouldn't be able to be the bodyguard of the Ran family.

However, he did not expect Yin Zhuo to be so powerful. He had only seen such neat and decisive techniques on TV. Every punch and kick was used without waste, and one person would fall down with every move.

In less than a minute, the thugs who had almost beaten Ruan Bei to a pulp were lying dead on the spot.

They didn't even have a chance to beg for mercy; before they could even utter a word, Yin Zhuo punched them in the face, silencing them.

"Brother Zhuo is awesome!"

Ruan Bei grinned and gave Yin Zhuo a thumbs-up, praising him sincerely.

He got hit on the face, and it hurt a little.

Yin Zhuo clasped his hands in a fist and said, "It's nothing. Didn't I tell you to wait for me? Why did you rush in by yourself? Tsk, with that face of yours, how am I going to explain this to Madam when I get back? My sister will beat me to death."

After escorting someone home, the bodyguard, Yin Zhuo, ended up with a bruise on the person's face, leaving him feeling dejected.

Ruan Bei hurriedly said, "It's none of your business. I should thank you. Don't worry, I'll explain it to Aunt Ran and make sure she doesn't punish you."

Remembering the little girl hiding behind him, Ruan Bei gave Yin Zhuo a wink: "Brother Zhuo, take them aside for now..."

Yin Zhuo grabbed the thugs by the collars and threw them into a pile. Ruan Bei, with his back to the girl, took off his coat and handed it to her, saying, "Make do with this for now."

The clothes were taken away, and there was a soft rustling sound behind him. Ruan Bei stood still, completely blocking the girl from view.

After a while, the hem of his T-shirt was gently tugged, and the girl said softly, "You're all dressed."

Ruan Bei turned around, without looking at the girl or asking her any questions, and simply said, "Where do you live? We'll take you home."

He paused, hesitated for a moment, and then advised, "Stay away from these people in the future. You should tell your family not to go out alone recently. You're just a little girl; you can't protect yourself."

The "girl" wearing Ruan Bei's coat suddenly looked up and raised her voice: "I am not a girl."

Ruan Bei: "...???!!!"

Holy crap, it's this little bastard!
