Chapter 6

He slept peacefully all night with the bedside lamp on, and nothing happened. The ghost he encountered yesterday that followed him all the way seemed to be just an illusion.

Ruan Bei dared not be careless, but the bright daylight was indeed enough to embolden him.

He tidied up the bedroom, hesitated for a moment at the front door, but still didn't dare to look through the peephole. He mustered his courage and opened the door directly—he felt that seeing a ghost's eye through the peephole was more terrifying than facing a ghost directly.

The door was empty, and Ruan Bei breathed a sigh of relief. He went downstairs, went home, had breakfast, and listened to his parents chattering about trivial family matters, which made him feel very comfortable.

The snack shop only serves lunch and dinner, but Dad has to go early to prepare, so he leaves after breakfast.

My mother's health isn't very good, so she hasn't been able to work a regular job. She usually helps out at my second aunt's flower shop, doing things like pruning flowers, arranging them, and selling them. It's not tiring, and it's easy for her to take time off if needed.

The Ruan family has no troublesome relatives. The three Ruan brothers are close, their mother gets along well with her two sisters-in-law, and the younger generation is like their own brothers and sisters.

When Ruan Bei was sick before, both of his uncles came to visit him, and his aunt even brought him nourishing soup for a few days.

"The weather is nice today. Why don't you come upstairs with Mom and tidy up the house?" Ruan's mother said to Ruan Bei while clearing away the dishes.

Ruan Bei was still worried about the ghost he had encountered yesterday, and he was still very scared. When he ran home last night, he didn't dare to look back, and he didn't know if the ghost had continued to follow him into the community.

He was definitely hoping the ghost was gone, but he couldn't be sure. He couldn't relax until he saw it, and if he did, he'd be scared out of his wits.

But it's broad daylight, the weather is great, the sun's out, so everything should be fine...

With a mix of trepidation and excitement, Ruan Bei went upstairs with her mother to clean the dust in the house, and threw the changed sheets and blankets into the washing machine. They were busy all morning, but nothing happened.

At noon, at his mother's request, Ruan Bei went to the convenience store outside the community to buy a bottle of vinegar. As he walked, he carefully looked around and, not seeing the man from last night, felt relieved.

When Dad came home that evening, the family sat down together and discussed it. After confirming that Ruan Bei was now in good health, they suggested that he go back to school.

Ruan Bei graduated from university more than two years ago. He majored in humanities and had hardly ever touched math.

Returning to high school was a sudden shock, and I was too disoriented to think about studying. I had only made a preliminary plan beforehand.

When his parents mentioned it, he went back to his room and flipped through his textbooks. He found that a lot of the knowledge looked familiar, but he had really forgotten how to use it.

If I were to go back to school to take the exam, I'd probably be worse off than my previous self at this time.

I definitely need to study, but given the current situation, I guess I'll have to find a way to catch up on my studies.

Even when faced with a pile of textbooks that he only half-understood, Ruan Bei remained calm. He was not afraid of relearning or the hardship of studying. Having the opportunity to start over was the greatest blessing God had given him.

With more than a year until the college entrance examination, he has enough time to pick up the knowledge he has forgotten, make up for the regrets of his past life, take the college entrance examination well, and show his true abilities.

Feeling that the minor trouble he encountered yesterday had been resolved, Ruan Bei did not insist on sleeping at Qin Gu's house upstairs tonight.

After dinner, I read books at home and organized my current knowledge.

He was a science student. In his previous life, after transferring schools, his grades were not ideal, so Lu Minghai directly transferred Ruan Bei to the liberal arts, which he thought was easier.

Ruan Bei's Chinese language scores are quite good, and his biology and chemistry scores are among the top in the class. In particular, he consistently ranks in the top three in quizzes and often gets first place.

My math and physics scores are relatively average, but my English score is a weak point.

Ruan Bei considers his memory to be fairly good; when reciting classical Chinese poems and prose, he can get a general impression after two or three repetitions.

Unfortunately, my English is terrible. I forget words from one word to another, and I have to spend a lot of time reviewing old words every day.

He tried various memorization methods recommended by his teachers and classmates, but he still forgot them.

I can't remember vocabulary, I have to guess on all the listening comprehension questions, my speaking is especially bad, and I can only get a few points for grammar.

Ruan Bei remembers that the class he hated most at this school was English.

When he was assigned to his current class in his second year of high school, he ranked fifteenth in the class in the first monthly exam, and just fell out of the top 100 in the grade.

Among the top twenty students in their class, he was the only one who failed English.

Ruan Bei also felt very sad about this, saying that it's really hard to stick to learning if you don't feel a sense of accomplishment.

He spends more time learning English but gains very little. Over time, he develops a psychological suggestion that "I can't learn this" or "this is too difficult for me," which leads to a rejection and avoidance of the subject, making it even more difficult to learn and resulting in even worse results.

The English teacher after the class reshuffle was not as easy to talk to and encouraging as the previous teacher. On the day the results came out, Ruan Bei stood up during the English class.

As soon as the teacher entered the classroom, she called his name and questioned him sternly why he had failed only English and whether he had a problem with the teacher.

He also said that his behavior was irresponsible to himself, his parents, and the school, and made him stand and listen to the lecture so that he could reflect on his actions.

Ruan Bei still remembers the embarrassment and shame he felt at the time. The gazes of his classmates made his face burn red, and he was distracted for the entire class.

He wanted to listen attentively in class, but he just couldn't concentrate. When the teacher went over the test, he kept being called on to answer questions.

His mind was unsettled; he would stumble over the questions he knew how to answer, and the ones he didn't know were even more embarrassing, making class feel like torture.

Back then, he was a naive young man who hadn't experienced much in his life. He was concerned about his image, thin-skinned, and felt ashamed, which led to a long period of depression.

He was too embarrassed to tell his family, and even more so to tell his sister, who had tutored him in English; it would be too embarrassing for her.

Only Qin Gu comforted him, but his childhood sweetheart's English was even worse than his.

What's impressive about his childhood friend is that despite not attending much school, he consistently achieved excellent grades. He could write essays in classical Chinese, and his math, physics, and chemistry scores were all outstanding. The only problem was that he often lost points because he didn't show his work when answering questions.

He was so-so in biology, nothing special but not a burden either, but his English was hopeless.

Fortunately, Qin Gu didn't meet his current English teacher. Qin Gu is a year older than him, a grade higher, and will be taking the college entrance exam soon.

As a result, in the last semester before the college entrance examination, he even took two months off to learn martial arts, and it was fortunate that the school agreed to it.

However, Qin Gu requested sick leave, which he does every year. The school probably agreed because they were worried he might faint during the exam.

Anyway, since that monthly exam, Ruan Bei's English grades have gotten even worse.

It's incredibly frustrating to not be able to focus on learning and to forget what you've learned as soon as you finish. He spent a lot of time on English, which also affected his other courses.

His test scores dropped, and his teacher talked to him. His English teacher even looked at him with a "you've given up on yourself" expression, which made Ruan Bei feel even more pressured.

It was a vicious cycle; he was in a particularly bad state during that time, but fortunately Qin Gu noticed it in time.

Ruan Bei didn't hide many of his innermost thoughts from Qin Gu. After listening, Qin Gu advised him that if he was really tired of studying, he should put English aside and study other subjects.

He cited himself as an example: his English was among the worst, but his overall score still surpassed that of most of his classmates.

As for the English teacher, don't pay too much attention to her opinions or statements, and don't let her remarks affect your mindset. Once you've stabilized your other grades, you can consider taking extra English lessons.

Ruan Bei did as he was told, and found that he was much happier learning other subjects than learning English.

He had a good foundation and hadn't fallen behind much, so he quickly caught up. His grades in other subjects improved, and he even made some progress compared to before.

My English grades have improved slightly, but they still can't compare to my other subjects; failing is the norm.

From then on, his English teacher regarded him as a thorn in her side. He could improve his other grades whenever he wanted, but why did he do so poorly in English? She felt that he must have a problem with her.

Ruan Bei had his childhood friend's support and comfort. When he was criticized, he would go home and complain to Qin Gu. Qin Gu would make him some delicious food and fun things to coax him, and his mood would improve again.

Ruan Bei, a high school sophomore, was terrible at English, but the reborn Ruan Bei is not!

If there was anything beneficial about Ruan Bei's previous life, he felt that besides knowing what was going to happen, it was the knowledge he gained.

The private high school he transferred to had many international classes and foreign students. The foreign language courses were not limited to English; they were all taught by foreign teachers.

At that time, he met a very good English teacher. She was beautiful and had a good personality. She found out that he didn't like English and was not good at memorizing words, so she recommended English movies and novels to him, all of which were interesting and easy to understand.

I don't force him to memorize words or do exercises. I just talk and chat with him, occasionally throwing in a few simple phrases. That's how I gradually sparked his interest.

He later suffered a major setback in his college entrance exam, but his English score had improved significantly, and he no longer had the fear and aversion he had before.

Once you get the basics of a language, it's a bit difficult to master it, but once you have a foundation, it's not hard to get a decent grasp of it.

In college, he took a course called English as a Foreign Language, which he studied quite diligently.

Most importantly, when he went to tutor children, he was a humanities major, and the parents, upon hearing this, didn't want him to teach science subjects. Even elementary school math required someone with advanced calculus skills.

Compared to Chinese, the market for English tutoring is larger, and the fees are relatively higher.

Relying on his impressive spoken English, which he had acquired from a foreign coach, Ruan Bei worked as an English tutor for a period of time.

Based on his own experience, he is good at teaching children according to their individual needs, and he has a gentle and patient personality, so he has a pretty good reputation.

After practicing like this, his English became very good. At least now when he looks at his English textbook, he realizes that the courses that tormented him back then weren't actually that difficult.

All courses, including English, don't require much time, just like in my previous life.

Similar to Chinese, there's even more to memorize in Chinese language class, but it should cover the entire high school Chinese curriculum without any problems.

He has neglected math and science for too long and needs to pick them up again.

I've made a simple study plan, and I'll modify and add details based on the actual situation after school starts.

Pack your schoolbag and go wash up early, because you have to go to school tomorrow.

After taking a nice hot shower, Ruan Bei opened her bedroom door while drying her hair.

The moment she pushed open the door, she looked up and saw a figure standing in front of her desk, where she had been sitting for half the day. Ruan Bei couldn't help but scream in fright.

Author's Note:

Qin Gu: My English is terrible? And I don't care about foreigners either!
