Chapter 57: Replacing the Roof

Cheng Jie said yesterday that the children in the school bring their own lunch every day and have a simple meal at noon.

After serving three big steamed buns, Li Qingyun personally sent Dabao to Cheng Jie's house. Although the other party said they would pick him up, she couldn't really wait for them to come and pick him up. Others' help was a favor, not a duty.

Cheng Jie's family was having breakfast. When they saw them come in, they hurriedly greeted them.

"Brother Cheng, thank you for your hard work. I will leave our family to you. Maotou, thank you for taking care of your younger brother." Li Qingyun said and touched Maotou's head.

When Cheng Jie told her that most first-grade children were five or six years old or older, and her own child was not even five years old, she felt a little worried.

"Auntie, I will definitely take good care of Dabao." Maotou said while shaking his head, making everyone laugh.

"Zhao Di, you just came. Why did you bring the steamed buns? Give them to Dabao. Save such good steamed buns made of two-grain flour for the child." Qiu Ju refused to accept the steamed buns she brought.

"Sister-in-law, look at you. Why are you being so polite to me for just a few steamed buns? I brought food for Dabao. This is specially sent to you. I would feel embarrassed if you don't accept it. I always trouble you and Brother Cheng."

After a few pleasantries, Qiuju was willing to accept the steamed buns. He knew that Qiuju was renovating the roof at home today and said that she would come over to help her after sending the children away. He told her not to refuse and just give her the meal, as her food was delicious.

Li Qingyun happily agreed.

When he left, he took out one yuan and twenty cents from his pocket and gave it to Cheng Jie, which was the tuition for one semester of first grade in elementary school.

She saw Cheng Jie's bicycle parked in the yard, and thoughtfully made a half-filled bamboo basket and installed it on the back seat, which could effectively prevent the two children from falling off.

He even sewed several thick layers of rags on the seat frame to cushion the buttocks. I have to say that Cheng Jie is a thoughtful person. I feel relieved to leave the child to him.

When Li Qingyun returned home, her father-in-law and Brother Gu had already moved the kitchen cabinets and sundries to the yard. They planned to replace the kitchen roof first so as not to delay cooking at noon. While she was out, Mother Gu finished cleaning up the house and came to help.

When her eldest son is doing housework, she will definitely come to help.

Both father and son went up to the roof, and Gu Tingzhou handed them a stack of hay from below. Li Qingyun hurried up to help, allowing Gu Tingzhou to rest, as his legs could not run around for a long time.

The wood on the roof of their house was all replaced when they moved in a few years ago. The wood chosen by Gu's father was good and still strong, so they just needed to replace the straw stacks.

After a while, Sister Qiuju also came to help. The three of them helped to pass the haystacks and do odd jobs, while two of them changed on the roof. They moved quickly. At this rate, they might be able to finish the job in one day.
