Chapter 1: Despair - The Future

The Armed Detective Agency received a strange commission.

The commissioned location was an orphanage on the outskirts of Yokohama. The client was the Special Powers Division. As usual, the Special Powers Division did not come in person, but only sent them a commission document. After reading the commission letter, President Fukuzawa arranged for Dazai Osamu and Kunikida Doppo to handle the case together.

"A suspected plague-type psychic? Why would such a psychic be handed over to the detective agency?" Kunikida Dopo walked while looking at the documents in his hand.

"The Special Forces Department is a special agency for dealing with people with special powers, but as an official organization, it is easily constrained by certain conditions. Didn't the Special Forces Department not participate in the Souou incident?" Dazai Osamu stretched his back and yawned heavily, "Ah, really, now is the time for me to try suicide!"

"Don't always act so righteously and do weird things!"

Dazai Osamu immediately expressed his dissatisfaction, "This is not a strange thing, but a great ideal!"

"Don't imitate me!"

"Yes, yes." Dazai Osamu opened the notebook in his hand and said, "Let me see Kunikida's recent plan. Wait, Kunikida, is your ideal partner actually like this?"

"Damn Dazai!" Kunikida Dopo snatched his notebook away, "Who allowed you to read my notebook without permission!"

Dazai Osamu smiled and dodged the furious Kunikida Dopo, then raised his voice and pointed forward, "Kunikida, we're here."

Kunikida Dopo stopped what he was doing, turned his head and looked ahead. After lifting a layer of dead vines, they saw the orphanage standing in the sunset.

Before coming here, Kunikida Doppo and Dazai Osamu had read the documents of the Special Powers Department. It was suspected that there were plague-type special powers in this orphanage, or it was possible that such special powers had awakened in the orphanage. But no matter what the situation was, a disease began to spread in the orphanage.

The Special Agents Department did not reveal what the specific disease was. They simply reminded the detective agency that the plague had begun to spread and must be dealt with immediately.

The orange sunset sprinkled on the whitewashed walls of the orphanage, which was surrounded by green plants. There was a vegetable patch in front of the entrance of the orphanage, with some sparsely planted vegetables on it. The vegetables looked a little wilted because no one cared for them or watered them. Dazai Osamu squatted beside the vegetable patch and took a look, then looked at Kunikida Dopo with interest.

"Kunikida-kun, do you know how to grow vegetables?"

"Although I have never grown vegetables here, I have heard some basic knowledge from Kenji." Kunikida Dopo reached out and pinched the leaves of the vegetables. "Judging from the growth and the degree of tillage of the soil, no one has come to take care of it for about a week. It looks like the abnormality here has lasted for at least a week."

Dazai nodded. "Do you think there are any survivors?"

"That depends on how contagious the plague is and whether it's fatal." Kunikida stood up and looked at the door of the orphanage. "Let's go in and take a look."

"Kunikida-kun is so handsome now~" Dazai Osamu stood up and made a voice of admiration without any tone of admiration.

Kunikida Dopo secretly held his own hands.

No, I'm processing a commission right now and can't beat up my partner on the spot.

The two walked to the orphanage together. There were some dark red scratches on the white gate of the orphanage, and the surrounding iron fences were shining with metallic luster. Kunikida Doppo pushed open the door, and after a moment of dust, Kunikida Doppo and Dazai Osamu smelled a rather indescribable smell.

It was a rotten smell mixed with a disgusting smell of blood. The strong smell made Dazai Osamu frown.

“It stinks.”

Kunikida Dopo took out the flashlight written on the notebook. He raised the flashlight and turned it on. The next moment, everything in the orphanage was exposed before their eyes: the fallen stone bench, the messy gray quilt, the blackened bloodstains, and the rotting corpse on the ground...

"How tragic." Dazai Osamu and Kunikida Doppo continued to walk forward. Kunikida Doppo's face was serious. "But this doesn't look like a plague at all. It looks more like a murder case."

"Indeed." Dazai Osamu glanced at the corpse on the ground, "The dead were also killed by physical force."

This is different from what the Special Powers Special Agents Department told them.

All the dead had external injuries, and the marks on the ground looked like the children were fleeing in a panic. Rather than a plague, it looked more like someone was chasing them.

Could it be that this was not a plague at all, but a family annihilation?

The further they went inside, the darker it got. Kunikida Dopo secretly swallowed his saliva. Although he knew very well that ghosts could not exist in this world, such things that violated science and were transformed from the dead could not exist. He had never seen it and would never see it.

However, he couldn't control his nervousness at all.

This is definitely not because he is afraid of ghosts!

"Is there any movement over there?" Dazai Osamu suddenly asked.

Kunikida Dopo was startled and almost couldn't help jumping up. After he came to his senses, he stared at Dazai Osamu fiercely, "Dazai, you bastard, don't joke at this time!"

"Although I really want to see Kunikida screaming because he's scared of ghosts, and I've even prepared a video, but this time it's real." Dazai Osamu pointed to a certain location with a smile, "There's really movement over there, if you don't believe me, listen for it?"

Kunikida Dopo was stunned for a moment. He looked at Dazai Osamu suspiciously, but at this moment, he heard a click.

It was a very light sound, and if it wasn't so quiet here they would hardly have heard it. Kunikida Doppo and Dazai Osamu looked at each other, and then the two of them walked towards the place where the sound came from.

After walking to the room, they finally heard the sounds inside.

"Why...why didn't you give me even one marble?"

"Everyone hates me, everyone is bullying me, they are hurting me."

"I'm going to kill them, kill them..."

The boy, who was not that old, kept muttering. Through the gap in the door, Kunikida Dubu saw the person sitting inside. His gray clothes were stained with blood, his eyes were numb and desperate, and in his hands were three blood-stained marbles.

He kept tapping the marbles and speaking words of despair.

The light from Kunikida Dopo's lamp dazzled him, and at that moment, the young man suddenly raised his head, staring at the two people outside the door with his bloodshot eyes.

"I'm going to kill you!"

The boy's murderous intent and despair were too strong, so Kunikida Doppo subconsciously took a step back. At this moment, Kunikida Doppo heard breathing sounds behind him.

He turned his head sharply and shone the flashlight behind him, "Who is it?!"

The flashlight illuminated the wall behind them, and also illuminated the person standing there. A man in a black coat looked at them. He was between a teenager and a young man, with short black hair and a good-looking face. His alopecia stood up high, but his eyes were heterochromatic, one red and one green. Even so, it did not affect his friendliness.

The man looked at them, then at the boy who was going crazy in the room, "Are you from outside?"

Dazai Osamu and Kunikida Doppo looked at each other, and after confirming that this person was capable of thinking, Kunikida Doppo walked over and handed over his business card.

"Hello, I'm Dopo Kunikida, an investigator from the Armed Detective Agency. His name is Dazai Osamu. We're here to investigate the plague at the orphanage."

"My name is Hinata Hajime." Hinata Hajime nodded, "Follow me first."

Hinata Hajime led Kunikida Doppo and Dazai Osamu through the corridor of the orphanage. Although he had walked here countless times, he felt sad every time he walked here. Both sides of the corridor were covered with black bloodstains mixed with a fishy smell, which was particularly unpleasant.

This disaster struck the orphanage unexpectedly, causing the entire orphanage to fall into a wave of despair.

"Where are we going?" Kunikida walked alone to catch up with Hinata Hajime.

"Where the survivors are." Hinata Hajime answered as they walked. "This is an orphanage. The survivors are orphans. They have no place to leave and no skills, so I took them to a safe place to stay temporarily."

"Why didn't you report it?" Kunikida continued to observe the surroundings. "This is definitely a homicide."

Hinata Sou shook his head. He looked at Kunikida Dopo with a hint of helplessness in his eyes. "No, this is not a homicide. This is an infectious disease."

"What?! What kind of infectious disease would have such an effect?"

"Despair."

Dazai frowned slightly, feeling strange about this new term, "What is despair?"

"Literally, it means a disease that brings despair to people." Hinata Sou sighed, "All the corpses here are people who killed each other after being infected with the despair disease. In other words, there is no murderer, they are just killing each other."

Kunikida Dopo was a little shocked. "I have never heard of this disease."

"Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist." Hinata Hajime said, "We're here."

As he spoke, Hinata Hajime pushed open a door in front of him. In an instant, an orange light came out. A dozen teenagers huddled together in fear. They looked at the door in horror, and only breathed a sigh of relief when they found out it was Hinata Hajime. Then they all ran over to greet him.

"Hinata-san, you're back."

"What's going on out there? Is anyone still alive?"

"When can we get out of here?"

The oldest boy walked up to Hinata Hajime. He was wearing the gray clothes of the orphanage and had short white hair. He looked at Kunikida Doppo and Dazai Osamu with some caution. "Mr. Hinata, who are they?"

"It's the investigator from the Armed Detective Agency." Hinata Hajime patted his shoulder, "Atsushi, calm down."

Nakajima Atsushi slowly relaxed his body and his complexion became a little better. "Sorry, I was too nervous."

"Don't worry, this is human nature." Hinata Hajime said softly, "After all, if you are suddenly caught in such a terrible self-destruction, no matter who you are, you will be nervous and panic."

"Trust me, everyone will be fine."
