Chapter 148 The Tower

Yin Lin is a captain in the Guard Legion and also belongs to the prestigious Tower Research Institute.

Therefore, her status within the tower was not actually low; she belonged to the middle class living on the third floor, and her status was even slightly higher than that of some technicians.

At this point, back in the tower, Yin Lin could easily turn her back on everyone and even call the sheriff.

However, she still chose to keep her promise and do her best to reward Yang Cheng.

Yang Cheng suddenly realized that this woman, apart from being somewhat naive, was also quite principled and persistent.

"I do want something right now, I wonder if you can get it for me."

"What is that?"

"Permanent residency for the tower!"

Looking out, Yang Cheng saw a densely packed city before him.

Indeed, Yang Cheng could only describe the city before him as densely packed.

Because there is no natural light source on the first floor of the tower, the lighting relies entirely on the solar-powered conversion lamps on the top floor, which convert external solar energy into energy to power the lights.

However, this light source is prioritized for floors two and above, so the light on the first floor is very dim, as dim as dusk.

In the dim light, Yang Cheng could see one densely packed high-rise building after another, like an anthill, with the distance between two buildings only wide enough for a narrow alleyway for two people.

Below the high-rise buildings, there are various privately constructed buildings. The better ones are made of reinforced concrete, while the worse ones are tin shacks, and there are even many houses built from various scrap materials.

The pedestrians looked numb and lifeless, as if their daily lives consisted only of surviving.

This is the first floor of the tower, a place even more cyberpunk than Kowloon Walled City, or rather, this is the real cyberpunk.

To complete the main quest, Yang Cheng must stay in the tower.

One month is simply not enough time, so obtaining a permanent residence permit is only the first step in completing the task.

Upon hearing Yang Cheng's request, Yin Lin hesitated for a moment, but still nodded and said, "No problem, I will definitely get the permanent residence permit sorted out within a month."

Getting permanent residency in the Tower isn't just about having money; you also need connections.

Yin Lin doesn't have such connections in the military, but she knows a few professors at the Tower Research Institute, so she could try asking them for help.

Just then, a horn sounded from the side, and a streamlined car, entirely silver-white and without wheels, hovering in mid-air, stopped in front of the two.

The car door opened, and a handsome man in a gray uniform stepped out.

"Yin Lin! You're finally back!"

The man grabbed Yin Lin, his face showing excitement.

Yang Cheng glanced at the man's uniform; he must be from the Guardian Legion.

Among these military units in the tower, the security officers of the security units all wore blue uniforms.

The Explorers Corps wears desert yellow uniforms because they frequently go out on missions.

The Guardian Legion is gray, while the Arbiter Legion is black.

"But why didn't you use the other two entrances? The first floor is so dirty, even the air smells like that of the lower class."

The man gave a look of disgust, then looked at Yang Cheng and frowned, asking, "Honey, who is he?"

Yin Lin quickly said to Yang Cheng, "Mr. Yang, this is my fiancé, Major Su Jie, staff officer of the Tower Guardians Corps."

Yin Lin then said to Su Jie, "I didn't tell you the details in the message before. This mission was too dangerous. The team that escorted me was slaughtered by the mutated earth dragon. I hired a team of mercenaries to try to get back to the tower, but they were targeted by the mutated people under Black Jack. Thanks to Mr. Yang Cheng, I was able to get back to the tower."

"If it weren't for Mr. Yang, you might not even be seeing me now."

After hearing this, Su Jie's expression changed slightly, and his eyes darted around, as if he was thinking about something.

Yin Lin nudged him: "Mr. Yang escorted me all the way back, why didn't you say thank you?"

Su Jie forced a smile and said to Yang Cheng, "Thank you, Mr. Yang, for escorting my fiancée back to the tower."

Yang Cheng said casually, "No need to be polite, I'm being paid."

Upon hearing this, Su Jie's expression darkened even further.

But Yin Lin didn't notice any of this. Perhaps because she had finally escaped the external dangers and returned home, she excitedly pulled Su Jie into the car and waved to Yang Cheng, saying:

"Goodbye, Mr. Yang. I'll contact you again after I get my permanent residence permit."

Watching the car float into the air, turn around, and drive away, Yang Cheng's lips curled into a mysterious smile. He then turned and walked towards the first floor of the tower.
