Chapter 296 Hypocritical People

"Why?!"

Zuo Yuan looked at Wei Lingyun with resentment and confusion.

In fact, before deciding to attack the capital, Sikong Zhaixing had already warned Zuo Yuan to be careful of Chu Qiu and Huang Qi.

Although he had no evidence to prove that Chu Qiu and Huang Qi had any problems, his intuition told him that something was off about the two of them.

Given the chance, Sikong Zhaixing is absolutely confident that he can review the scene of the battle and deduce exactly what went wrong.

Unfortunately, Zuo Yuan was too eager and did not give Sikong Zhaixing the opportunity.

He was wary of Chu Qiu and Huang Qi, but he never expected that Wei Lingyun, the third leader of his Thirty-Six Great Bandits, would turn the tables!

Wei Lingyun sighed and said, "I'm sorry, Chief, but if you don't die today, we will all die."

"Seventh Brother and Chu Qiu have sided with the Grand Commander. If this is exposed, we will all be doomed."

You are you, and they are them!

"I, Zuo Yuan, have always acted with integrity and uprightness; how could I possibly engage in guilt by association?"

Wei Lingyun said expressionlessly, "Boss, if you don't practice guilt by association, can you guarantee that others won't?"

The Thirty-Six Great Bandits could not tolerate us. If we had died with our leader, Chu Tianfang, back then, we might have earned a good reputation now.

But the problem is we're all alive! They don't treat us like brothers!

Chu Qiu and Lao Qi were wronged, so they had no choice but to rebel, and so do we!

Zuo Yuan's face suddenly lost its resentment, replaced by a bitter smile: "I never imagined that all these years of treating everyone equally would have created such a bunch of enemies!"

Yang Cheng then said calmly, "'Heavenly King' Zuo Yuan is known throughout the martial arts world for his unparalleled loyalty and magnanimity."

But now it seems you're just a hypocrite. Are you unwilling to face your own ugly true nature, or are you simply putting on a facade for others?

Who are you calling a hypocrite?

Zuo Yuan turned his gaze to Yang Cheng, his eyes bloodshot, like those of a demon.

Yang Cheng sneered, "What? Did I hit a nerve?"

Chu Tianfang's death should indeed have nothing to do with you, but can you honestly say that you didn't use Chu Tianfang's men to take revenge for yourself?

And later, when you obtained those rare treasures, you seemed to generously share them with Wei Lingyun and the others, but wasn't that because you were confident that you could take the treasures from them at any time?

Over the years, Wei Lingyun and his group have been ostracized by others. If you truly treat everyone equally, you shouldn't have two different attitudes towards each side.

You seem kind and benevolent towards Chu Tianfang's former subordinates, treating them with great courtesy and respect.

However, they did not actually give them real power. Whenever their trusted subordinates clashed with them, regardless of right or wrong, they would first reprimand their own people, which made them even more resentful of Chu Tianfang's subordinates.

Although you sometimes scold or beat your confidants, you trust them with a lot of power so that they believe that you, their 'older brother,' truly trust them.

With this shift in power, they certainly cannot completely integrate into the Thirty-Six Great Bandits, nor can they become a threat to you, let alone evidence of your unwavering loyalty and righteousness, Zuo Yuan!

Yang Cheng's words were like daggers, some of which were even unexpected by Wei Lingyun and the others. This made Zuo Yuan's face turn ashen, and even slightly ferocious.

It's hard to define a person like Zuo Yuan. He's not actually hypocritical; to be precise, he's just unable to face his true inner self.

He wanted to become a truly righteous and renowned hero, and this was his goal ever since he entered the martial arts world.

Therefore, his actions were very awkward.

On the one hand, they act with extreme utilitarianism, while on the other hand, they pretend to be righteous and noble.

He is truly a man of great integrity and loyalty, just like his attitude towards Wei Lingyun and others. Even outsiders can't find fault with him. The only ones who are flawed are his "unruly" brothers.

On the other hand, driven by self-interest, he used various schemes and tactics to control them.

It's like someone whose ideal is to be a good person, and he tries his best to do good deeds, but he only saves people when they are about to drown, or acts bravely when the villains are about to kill them.

He did do good deeds, but they were done with a heart full of self-interest. Can such a person be considered a good person?

The paths may be different, but the results may be the same, yet they will feel very awkward.

Zuo Yuan is in this state of mind now, and sometimes even he himself can't tell which one is the real him.

After a moment of silence, Zuo Yuan stared at Yang Cheng with a ferocious expression, exuding an aura of madness.

"Yang Cheng! No matter what you say, I, Zuo Yuan, have a clear conscience! I, Zuo Yuan, have not wronged anyone!"

"You killed my brothers and destroyed my empire! Even if I die in the capital today, I will take you with me!"

As Zuo Yuan finished speaking, blood-red ripples spread around his body. Even though he had been injured by Wei Lingyun's sneak attack and was still bleeding from his mouth, he did not stop at all and frantically urged his blood and qi.

Yang Cheng gently shook his head.

Although Zuo Yuan appears to be a bold and magnanimous person, his vision is too narrow, and he is destined to achieve nothing.

At first, his goal was simply to become a powerful figure in the martial arts world, wanting to start from scratch and rise to the level of those major martial arts sects.

Later, after he obtained those secret treasures that allowed his own power to advance by leaps and bounds, his ambition gradually swelled, and he even wanted to seize the entire world.

The problem is that his power came too quickly, so quickly that even he himself couldn't quite accept it.

His mentality was still that of a chivalrous and righteous hero, not a true warlord preparing to conquer the Central Plains.
