Chapter 31 Not a Compassionate Person
When the big men found that their accomplices had already carried away a lot of dry food, they decided not to fight anymore.
"withdraw!"
The big man who came with such force retreated like the tide.
Li Da wanted to chase them, but seeing his dead and injured colleagues on the ground, he could only grit his teeth and give up. "These bastards, I will catch them all and fry them in oil sooner or later."
Su Ying did not chase after him either. She was worried about the elderly, young, sick and disabled in the family and was afraid that they would become targets of robbery.
Su Ying looked at the place where the officials stored their dry food and saw that there was only one bag left. This amount would not be enough even for a quarter of each person. She planned to put her several bags into the supply space when no one was paying attention to avoid a scramble for them.
"Boss, what should we do? This is all we have left." The officer burst into tears as he looked at the only bag of dry food left.
More than twenty officers were killed or injured, and their dry food was also stolen. They were in a dilemma for a while.
Li Da's face darkened. "Let's wait for Wang Hu to come back and see what Yunshui City says." Now he can only pin his hopes on the government in Yunshui City. If they don't help to find a solution, he will be helpless. Even if he reports to the court, it will take at least ten days to go back and forth. The waiting time is enough to starve people to death.
Su Ying returned to Xiao Jin and the others. Mother Zhao stepped forward nervously and asked, "Madam, are you not injured?"
Su Ying shook her head. Those people couldn't hurt her, but there were too many people in the hall and she couldn't move freely.
"I'm fine, don't worry, Mama Zhao. We may not stay here for long. The dry food in the hands of the officers has been robbed. These prisoners will definitely cause trouble if they have nothing to eat. We have to be careful and act according to circumstances."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
After dawn, Wang Hu, who had gone to Yunshui City, came back, but he brought back bad news.
He did meet the officials from Yunshui City, but the officials said that they had already supplied the supplies and had nothing more to give them, so they asked them to figure out a solution on their own.
"Boss, what should we do? We can't just wait here. We can wait, but will those prisoners be obedient?" The police were not many in number to begin with, and now several have died. If the prisoners really want to rebel, they will be no match for them.
The most important thing now is where to find something to eat and get through these days.
Over the next two days, Li Da boiled the remaining dry food into porridge in a large pot and distributed a little to everyone. But after everyone finished eating this little bit, there was nothing left.
The rain has not been so heavy in the past two days, and the sky was clear early this morning. Li Da wanted to set off for Wujiang Wharf, because the official he sent to Yunshui City yesterday came back and said that there was a boat at Wujiang Wharf.
As long as they can cross the river, they can survive.
"Get up, get up, everyone, get up, and get ready to go." Li Da waved the whip and shouted at the prisoners.
Su Ying and the others had already packed up and got up.
The prisoners had not had enough to eat before, and they were even hungrier in the past two days. How could they have any strength left at the moment?
The officers whipped those who lay motionless on the ground. Some of them were able to get up, but some could never get up again.
"Sir, please stop beating us. We really can't stand up anymore... If you keep on beating us, we'll kill them."
A ragged old woman knelt on the ground and kept begging the officer, but the officer kicked her away and whipped a young man on the ground with a whip.
Xiao Jin glanced at the old woman, a dark light flashed in his eyes, "Jiang Yang, bring those mother and son here."
Jiang Yang responded and walked up to the officer and grabbed the whip in his hand. The officer looked up angrily and asked, "Are you looking for death?"
Jiang Yang said coldly, "He hasn't eaten for so many days, and his body can't stand the wind and rain. Even if you kill him, he won't get up. If you anger the rest of the people like this, you will suffer the consequences."
The officer knew that what he said was right, and he glared at him coldly before stopping and walking back.
The old woman knelt down in front of Jiang Yang and kowtowed in gratitude, "Thank you so much, benefactor."
Jiang Yang squatted down to check on the man and found that his body was terribly hot. He had a fever, but he didn't know what caused it.
Su Ying was a little surprised that Xiao Jin rescued people, because he was not a person who could easily be compassionate.
Xiao Jin didn't move his eyebrows, and said calmly: "You are not going to form a team. These people have received your favor, and even if they don't follow you wholeheartedly, they will still be cautious."
Su Ying felt that Xiao Jin was not telling the truth, but he was not stupid enough to let a dangerous person follow them, so when Jiang Yang carried the young man over, she still went forward to check on him.
Apart from the external injuries from being whipped by the police, the young man seemed to have no other injuries. His fever was probably caused by catching a cold due to being caught in the rain for too long.
Su Ying took out the antipyretic medicine from her bag and handed it to the old woman. "This medicine can cure your son's illness. If you trust us, let him take it."
Jiang Yang saved his son, and now Su Ying gave them medicine. How could the old woman not believe it? They were already in this situation, so what else could people plot against?
"Thank you, ma'am. Thank you very much." The old woman took the broken bowl that Bai Shuang handed to her and let the young man drink the water and medicine in it.
Because the young man had been burned unconscious, Su Ying could only let him get on the carriage. Xiao Jin was watching over him inside, so nothing would happen.
Before leaving, the old woman thanked them profusely. Su Ying could see that her gratitude came from the bottom of her heart.
After leaving the dilapidated temple, Li Da led the team towards the mountain, probably wanting to see if he could find something to eat in the mountains.
On the road, refugees fleeing famine could be seen everywhere. When they saw so many of them coming from the direction of Yunshui City, the hopeful looks in their eyes gradually dimmed.
They were going to Yunshui City to escape the disaster, but these people were going in the opposite direction. Does this mean that Yunshui City could not give them any chance of survival at all?
Some people who were doubtful stopped and looked at them, and for a moment they didn't know whether to move forward or what to do.
When Su Ying and her companions arrived at the foot of the mountain, they found that there were disaster victims both on and off the mountain. They were searching the mountain in a carpet-like manner, probably looking for food. Even the roots of the edible wild vegetables on the mountainside were gone.
Seeing this scene, Li Da felt very disappointed. It seemed that it would be extremely difficult for them to find food in the mountains.
But it was getting dark, so I had to find a place to stay.
"Pick some people out from among you and follow me to the mountains to see if we can find something to eat." At this time, he was almost starving to death, and he no longer cared whether any prisoners would escape.
"yes."
Su Ying pulled the carriage under a big tree and tied it up. As soon as she walked over, she clearly felt countless pairs of eyes on her, and her hands holding the reins tightened a little.
