Chapter 452: Embezzlement
Su Ying spent some money to buy a pass from Shopkeeper Li.
The granary that Manager Li mentioned was located in a relatively secluded place outside the city, so she had to leave the city.
Su Ying rode her horse to the city gate, and the soldiers guarding the city let her go after checking her pass.
As soon as she came out, she found that there were more victims guarding outside the city gate than before. She didn't look at them any more and rode her horse directly to the foot of a mountain outside the city.
The location of the granary is actually quite open, and the main reason is to prevent it from being too humid, so sufficient light is required. The location is not far from Los Angeles and it only takes less than fifteen minutes to get there by horse racing.
In order not to expose the location of the granary, some small cover was built outside the granary, but this could not stop Su Ying.
Su Ying rode her horse to the mountainside. The mountain was not steep and she could ride a horse.
After crossing a forest, she saw rows of houses built on the mountainside.
There was no one guarding the granary anymore, and from a distance one could see that the courtyard wall had turned pitch black.
Su Ying dismounted, put the horse into the space and walked towards the granary. She took out a scanner and made sure that there was no one around before walking to the main entrance of the granary.
The door was locked, but the facade had been so blackened that its original color could not be seen.
Su Ying climbed over the wall and saw the granary that had been burned into ruins.
There were several rows of houses inside, but every house was burnt black, and it was so dark inside that it was a bit creepy.
Su Ying walked forward and pushed open the blackened door and found a lot of burnt debris inside.
She walked over to a pile of residue, pushed them aside with her hands and examined them carefully. She found that there was something wrong with the burnt residue. It did not look like the state of food after being burnt at all.
In order to make sure that her observation was correct, Su Ying went to other granaries to check the situation, and finally confirmed that those piles of residues were not grain at all!
Su Ying's face was darker than the burnt wall. Shopkeeper Li said that there was a big fire in the granary at that time. Due to the untimely rescue, most of the grain in the granary was burned, which resulted in the government having no food to provide porridge to the victims.
But what if the food in the granary was not burned at all!
There is so much grain in the granary that if they want to transport it all out, it would be impossible not to leave any traces.
Su Ying came out of the granary and began to look around for traces.
This place is relatively hidden, and usually there are very few people coming here. In addition, there has been no rain during this period. When Su Ying groped her way to the back mountain, she discovered rows of obvious wheel marks.
Following the traces, Su Ying found a cave, but she did not approach immediately because there was someone guarding outside the cave.
She hid in the dark and observed for a while. After confirming that there were only two people guarding outside the cave entrance, she took out the tranquilizer gun and knocked them down.
Su Ying walked to the entrance of the cave. If she was not familiar with such a desolate place, it would be difficult for her to tell that there was a cave entrance here.
She pushed aside the vines covering the cave entrance and walked in.
There was convection wind at the entrance of the cave, and when the wind blew over she smelled the scent of rice.
Su Ying took out a flashlight and turned it on. Even though she had already thought of it, she was still angry when she saw the food neatly stacked in the cave.
This beast actually dared to steal food from the imperial court!
Su Ying walked in and found that the cave was very deep and almost full of food.
In order not to alert the enemy, she did not plan to store the food into the space for the time being. After confirming the amount of food, Su Ying came out of the cave and woke up the two guards to prevent them from noticing anything unusual.
The sun had already set when Su Ying came down from the mountain, and she had to get into the city before dark.
As night falls, the already sluggish streets of Los Angeles seem even more deserted.
Zhou Qing simply ate some dry food and planned to go to bed. She had to go out of the city to welcome the Queen early tomorrow morning!
Zhou Qing was lying on the bed, feeling indescribably excited. Just as she was about to fall asleep, she suddenly smelled a burnt odor.
She opened her eyes alertly and walked to the window to check the situation, and found that the inn was on fire.
The inn was a wooden building, and the weather was dry, so the fire quickly grew bigger.
Zhou Qing took out a cloth from his body and poured the remaining half pot of water on the towel to cover his mouth and nose. Then he bent down, opened the door and ran out.
However, she did not go downstairs immediately but knocked on the door of the next door. She knew that the grandparents and grandchildren whom Su Ying had rescued lived next door.
"Open the door, open the door quickly!"
But no matter how Zhou Qing knocked on the door, there was no movement.
The fire woke up the inn's guests. Many sober people ran out of the guest rooms and rushed to the lobby to escape, but the door of the inn was locked from the outside!
"Help, open the door quickly, cough cough cough...help..."
"Open the door, open the door..."
The smoke in the inn grew thicker and thicker, making it almost impossible for them to open their eyes.
Zhou Qing gritted his teeth and pushed open the door. As soon as he entered, a billowing cloud of smoke rushed out.
The fire had spread to the room. The grandfather and grandson might have been fainted by the thick smoke and were lying on the bed without any movement.
Zhou Qing almost crawled to the bedside while lying on the ground to save people, but even if she had the kung fu skills, it would be difficult for her to carry both of them out in this situation.
Zhou Qing gritted his teeth, picked up the child, turned around and ran outside, but the fire was so big that he was trapped by the fire and thick smoke as soon as he ran out.
It was already dark when Su Ying returned to the city gate. After she showed her pass, the soldiers guarding the city did not let her in immediately.
"Were you out purchasing goods? How come you're back so soon?" The number of people leaving the city every day is limited, and the police can remember who is out.
"I was supposed to go out to pick up some goods, but something went wrong with that batch of goods and I can't get through now."
It is normal that there are problems with food and supplies for both bandits and disaster victims nowadays.
After confirming that Su Ying was fine, the officers let her into the city.
There were no pedestrians on the road. Su Ying rode her horse all the way. As soon as she returned to the street where the inn was located, she found that the entire street was surrounded by thick smoke.
Su Ying had an ominous premonition in her heart. She did not rush over, but found a hidden place to enter the space and took out a fire-resistant suit and a smoke mask. After putting them on, she rode her horse towards the place where the smoke was coming out.
When she got closer, she found that the fire was actually in the inn where she was staying!
Su Ying's pupils shrank and she quickly dismounted. When she got closer, she heard desperate cries for help coming from the inn.
When Su Ying walked to the door, she found that the door of the inn had been welded shut from the outside.
She gritted her teeth, took a step back, and kicked the four corners of the door. The door made a few "boom" sounds and fell to the ground in an instant.
The moment the door of the inn was kicked open, a thick smoke rushed out, almost covering Su Ying.
