In the script design, the plot begins with this poem, followed by a scene where Li Kan puts the milk on Cheng Jie's desk, turns around, and sneaks back to his classroom.
Amidst the good friend's confusion, the camera shifts, and memories of that snowy night begin to surface. After the flashback, Cheng Jie appears, and the introduction of the second year of high school is seamlessly connected to Cheng Jie's character's entrance.
If the original story simply told you what happened, this new design greatly increases the plot's appeal, leaving viewers with many questions when it airs: Why secretly put in the milk? Who is Cheng Jie? Why are they pursuing someone named Cheng Jie?
Then Chengjie appears, and the narration will bring up the various things that the two of them have been going on since their second year of high school. A sense of "so that's how it is" arises spontaneously, and then one becomes curious about whether Li Kan has successfully won Chengjie's heart.
Having read this far in the script, Ye Chu became very curious, so she continued to flip through the pages.
Cheng Jie didn't react to the sudden appearance of extra items on the table. The flowers withered quickly without water and would have to be thrown away after school. She had already drunk the milk at breakfast at home, so she gave it to the girl sitting next to her. As for the anonymous poems, well, it was immediately obvious which idiot had written them.
The second semester of senior year already goes by quickly, but ever since the countdown to the college entrance exam was hung up in front of the office, the days seem to fly by even faster.
Cheng Jie pretended not to know about Li Kan's various underhanded actions. She had three considerations: First, Li Kan's gifts were given inexplicably; second, as a qualified test-taking machine and a score-obsessed person at school, she naturally couldn't break her image; third, as a qualified senior high school student, dating was a priority after studying and exams in her current life plan, meaning that Cheng Jie had no such consideration at the moment.
Li Kan didn't know what Cheng Jie was thinking, nor did he receive a response from her, but he wasn't discouraged. He told himself that true love couldn't be obtained overnight, and as a romantic liberal arts student, he should be patient and persistent.
This persistence lasted until there were only four days left until the college entrance examination. With the exam fast approaching, and knowing that he and Chengjie would inevitably go their separate ways if there were still no results, Li Kan intensified his efforts.
That day after school, he stopped Chengjie on her way home. Chengjie was a little scared; the man in front of her looked like he was there to fight.
"What are you doing?" she asked, taking two steps back warily. There was a small alley to her right, with a complicated route that could be her first escape route. If things went wrong, she would sprint at once.
"Are you going to agree to be with me or not?!" Li Kan shouted at her, his face flushed. He didn't believe this woman didn't know that he was the one who had set everything up.
"Huh?" Chengjie breathed a sigh of relief: "What? Why didn't you say so earlier? I thought you were going to fight me." Then she said what she had prepared beforehand: "Your confession won't do, it's not grand enough. Do your best on the college entrance exam, and on the afternoon after the exam, at the old banyan tree behind the school, I'll give you another chance."
Li Kan toned down his somewhat fierce demeanor, pondered for a moment, and said, "Alright! It's settled then." As soon as he finished speaking, he rummaged in his school uniform pocket, pulled out two candies he had bought that morning from the grocery store at the end of the alley, stuffed them into Cheng Jie's hand, and then ran off.
"Fool." Cheng Jie raised an eyebrow as she watched him run away, then happily took the two candies home.
She didn't keep the flowers or milk Li Kan gave her, only the beautifully copied poems, which she stuffed into a whole cookie tin. She hid the cookie tin under her bed, and after school, she ran to her room, crawled under the bed, and took the cookie tin out.
She put two candies into the cookie tin, along with the poems, closed the tin, and stuffed it back under the bed.
During dinner that evening, Chengjie's mother asked her daughter, "What's wrong with you? Since the second semester of your senior year, you've been running to your room every day after school. Your clothes are very dirty when you come back from outside. Please change your clothes before going back to your room, okay?"
"I understand!" Cheng Jie replied with a strong voice. After all, agreeing is one thing, doing is another.
The four days passed quite quickly, and the college entrance exam went by very fast from start to finish. After the exam, Chengjie stood under the tree waiting for Li Kan. In summer, the old banyan tree had dense leaves, layer upon layer, blocking out the sunlight.
Li Kan felt that the road from the examination hall to the tree at the back gate suddenly seemed longer. He was a little uneasy and hesitant when he saw a figure standing under the tree in the distance.
Chengjie, holding her transparent pencil case, waited quietly for him. In his memory, Chengjie was always exceptionally lively and even outgoing when she wasn't at school; he rarely saw her so quiet and reserved outside of school.
My heart was pounding; even though we hadn't arrived at our destination yet, it felt like it was already in my throat.
Why are you so slow?
It's probably best for her not to say anything.
"hurry up!"
"Ahem." Li Kan cleared his throat, took a deep breath, and poured out all the words he had thought of on the way: "Would you like to be with me? I will treat you exceptionally well for the rest of my life, I would even give you my life!"
It was magnificent and deafening.
Cheng Jie thought to herself that this confession had a romantic drama feel to it, and also a bit of a domineering CEO vibe. She guessed that this person had probably borrowed from some strange novel.
"Okay," she said.
"What do you mean 'okay'? You have to answer 'yes'!" Li Kan's face turned red again; this guy always seemed to have something on him.
"Okay, I promise you." Chengjie repeated herself, then thought for a moment and asked, "How did you feel after the exam?"
Li Kan almost choked: "In such a serious setting, you just accepted my confession and you're asking this?"
"I didn't ask the wrong question! How can we apply to the same school if you don't do well on the exam? Are you trying to have a long-distance relationship?"
That seems to make sense.
So the story of this confession ended with the two of them reflecting on their college entrance exams.
Having read this far in the script, Ye Chu's lips were already aching from smiling. This couple's story had only just begun, yet it was already both hilarious and absurd. Who knew what strange developments would follow?
Cheng Jie and Li Kan both had excellent grades and were accepted into top universities without any problems. However, although they weren't in a long-distance relationship, they were in a cross-university relationship. One was studying science and engineering at Tsinghua University, and the other was studying humanities at Peking University.
Fortunately, the two schools weren't far apart, and they would find time to meet outside the campus during their university years. However, their long-distance relationship still caused quite a few hilarious mishaps, one of the funniest being on Valentine's Day during their sophomore year.
The timing of the festival coincided with a Friday, a day full of classes. After class that day, Chengjie didn't go to study with her roommates; instead, she went out to meet Li Kan.
Not having time to prepare a gift, she thought she'd tell Li Kan she owed him and make it up to him later. Little did she expect that when they met, he had the same idea. So, on Valentine's Day, the young couple arrived empty-handed, looking at each other awkwardly amidst the fragrance of flowers and chocolates from other couples around them. They ultimately decided to just buy a jianbing (Chinese crepe) and split it in half.
