Chapter Forty-Nine

Ye Chu finished reading the script in one go, and it was already past 3 a.m., but she didn't feel sleepy at all. Instead, she was full of energy.

As expected of a script by a renowned author, it is not entirely a dry documentary; the plot is interestingly arranged, and the storyline, while close to real life, also has a certain degree of drama.

The love story of Mr. Li and his beloved Chengjie must be very beautiful.

Ye Chu was quite certain of this, so she casually searched online. The results showed that the web pages were all about Li Kan's wife, Cheng Jie, dying in a car accident.

Ye Chu checked the time; it was five years ago. It was a long time ago, and she couldn't remember if she'd seen the news back then, but the news was indeed very regrettable. The adorable and lively Cheng Jie in the script was now…

Ye Chu felt a pang of sadness. Looking again at the grand wedding scene at the end of the script, watching the vows of the newlyweds, she thought, "Back then, they probably never imagined that Cheng Jie would be five years younger than Li Kan now, six next year, then seven..."

What kind of feeling was that? Unlike the protagonist in "Daylight," Xu Yan was eventually able to reunite with He Jiu in spirit form, but in reality, Li Kan would never see Cheng Jie again.

So, as Gu Yingdi said, Li Lao must have been very strict in choosing the role of Chengjie, after all, she is an irreplaceable person.

With a somewhat sad feeling, Ye Chu slowly drifted into a dream.

She slept and when she opened her eyes again it was already noon. She took off her pajamas, changed into her everyday clothes, washed up, and came to the living room. Changji had been there for a while and was busy in the kitchen.

Ye Chu then recounted what had happened last night to Chang Ji. Chang Ji paused for a moment, but wasn't too surprised: "Of course, it would be great to get this opportunity."

"Yes, I think so too, so I will try my best." Ye Chu smiled and helped the other person bring the stir-fried dishes to the dining table.

She sat down in the chair, and Gu Yu had already sent her a message on WeChat.

Gu Yu: I asked, and Mr. Li said he's free after 3 PM the day after tomorrow. I'm going to Mr. Li's house for the audition, so I'll go with him and give you a ride on the way.

The message was sent around 7:00 AM, and a whole morning had passed, so Ye Chu quickly replied.

Ye Chu: Okay, thank you, Best Actor.

Gu Yu was probably busy with something, as he didn't reply until half an hour later: "The intersection from last time?"

Ye Chu: Okay.

After agreeing, Ye Chu showed the message to Chang Ji, who nodded and said, "That's great, my idol is here to pick me up personally."

Ye Chu blushed, lowered her head and ate her rice without saying a word, thus missing the probing look in Chang Ji's eyes.

Having failed to probe Ye Chu's intentions, Chang Ji sighed inwardly. "I'm sorry, boss, it's not that I didn't try, it's just that the target is tight-lipped."

Until the day of her audition, Ye Chu stayed home studying the script. She printed out a copy and filled it with dense notes, some of which were her own understanding, some were the characteristics she wanted to portray, and she circled the parts she didn't understand in detail.

Understanding a character is a time-consuming process. Ye Chu spent almost every day and night interpreting the script and the character, but she still felt uneasy when she got into Gu Yu's car.

Her high school and college years were too uneventful, filled with nothing but studying. She had never even been in a relationship, so she was unsure about the emotional details of the character.

Gritting her teeth, she mustered her courage and asked Gu Yu, who was sitting next to her, "Mr. Gu, could you take a look at this for me?"

Gu Yu took the printed script from her and flipped through it. Ye Chu was very serious; her thoughts were written in neat handwriting: "What don't you understand?"

"Here!" Upon hearing that her crush was willing to help her, Ye Chu immediately rushed over excitedly, took Gu Yu's hand, and flipped open the script to find the scene where the two main characters shared their first kiss.

This light kiss scene is a very vivid scene in the script. It is not a simple kiss between the two protagonists, but a one-sided, forceful kiss by Cheng Jie on Li Kan.

It was during their sophomore summer vacation when they returned to their hometown and came to that banyan tree again. The banyan tree was still full of vitality and was growing exceptionally lush in the summer.

The two walked to its trunk, and Li Kan couldn't help but place his hand on its massive trunk. The rough bark had many lines, like something had been forcefully written on a piece of paper...

"Li Kan," Cheng Jie suddenly called out to him.

With just a turn of his head, before Li Kan could even react, Cheng Jie grabbed his shoulders with both hands, pinned him against the tree trunk, and forcefully kissed him.

"Why did Cheng Jie suddenly kiss him so forcefully?" When asking the question, Ye Chu turned her face slightly to the side, so that Gu Yu could see the soft lines of her face. Her pale pink lips opened and closed, revealing the tip of her tongue peeking out from beneath her white teeth.

To flip through the script in his hand, the other person leaned closer, his body leaning forward, and a faint scent of peach wafted over.

Gu Yu’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he suppressed the rising urge in his heart and tried to keep his voice calm as he said, “My personal opinion is that Cheng Jie’s emotions erupt here.”

Ye Chu thought about it and realized that her crush made sense. When Cheng Jie was with Li Kan, her behavior was clearly not as enthusiastic as Li Kan's. In the following two years of college, although the two would meet up, their daily relationship was too innocent and uneventful for a couple.

They'd been dating for over two years, and the most intimate thing they'd done was hold hands. Li Kan had been very bold when he confessed his feelings, but he'd become quite reserved when it came to relationships. Cheng Jie, on the other hand, had always remained the same: at school, she was the studious, studious type; outside, she was a lively and outgoing person. Over time, it felt like things between them had become somewhat distant.

Under the impact of this bleak feeling, Cheng Jie became much bolder than Li Kan, who was still hesitant to hold hands. So, taking advantage of the opportunity to go home, she forcefully kissed Li Kan under the banyan tree. Only then did their feelings break through the gloom and erupt like a volcano.

After suddenly understanding, Ye Chu looked at Gu Yu with shining eyes: "I get it! Thank you, Actor Gu!"

Seeing her eyes light up like a little fox that had just gotten some food, Gu Yu raised her hand and placed it on Ye Chu's head, giving it a couple of rubs.

Ye Chu was startled by his action and blankly followed his movements, lowering her head to let him touch her.

This suited Gu Yu's wishes perfectly. If the other person kept looking at him like that, he really wouldn't be able to resist the urge to press them down in the back seat and kiss them.

Ye Chu doesn't have those kinds of feelings for him right now, and he doesn't want to scare him, so he can only endure it a little longer. Fortunately, as long as Ye Chu can successfully land the role of Cheng Jie, he will naturally have a way to slowly win over the little fox during filming.
