Chapter Twenty-Six: The Special Ones

Everyone had imagined what the special patient the director was talking about would be like, but no one could actually guess.

Because in front of them were three children who were only six years old. The nurse explained the situation to them, and after hearing it, the children all felt sad.

These three children are indeed very special patients; they all suffer from autism, or more commonly, autism spectrum disorder. All three are receiving treatment at this hospital.

This time, the filming still used hidden camera techniques. It was the children's task to interact with the three children, while the adults were responsible for assisting the doctors and nurses, taking turns on duty, teaching the five children how to get along with the three special new friends, and observing and writing down their thoughts.

"I feel this is even more difficult than infiltration, or rather, I don't know where to start." In a personal interview, Ye Chu said, "Because I had never done this before and had no experience, I was very worried that if I did it poorly, it would have an impact on the children."

She lowered her head, no longer looking at the camera: "A few of us taught Alix and the others how to try to interact with the kids, but on the first day, all five kids ran out, saying they didn't want to stay inside anymore. They would also come outside and cry to us. The whole atmosphere wasn't very good; it was very depressing, the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel very uncomfortable."

“When I first saw them, I thought it was amazing.” This is from Michael’s personal interview: “They were very quiet, too quiet… I didn’t feel the energy of children. The three of them were in a room, far apart, and they didn’t say a word. On the first day of observation, I felt that the whole atmosphere was very scary.”

At this point, Michael sniffled, her voice trembling with tears: "I'm a rather lively and active person, I like being around people, and I was also the kind of kid who was quite noisy, so after a day of quiet, I just felt... um... never mind." She turned her back to the camera, not wanting to continue the interview.

“Well, I asked Lulu to try exchanging names with the other children, like asking for their names or if they could play together.” Wan Chen sat in his chair. “Then I noticed that no one paid any attention to Lulu, as if they couldn’t hear her. She seemed to be immersed in her own world. Lulu looked very helpless at the time, and I could tell she was already a little scared.”

“Lulu has always been very lively, and she gets along very well with Michael. The two of them, one big and one small, often whisper to each other. But after the shoot today, she ran over and hugged me, holding my hand without saying a word.”

Qian Yiyi was probably in the best condition among them. The director asked her, "After today, has there been anything particularly special that you felt?"

“Actually, I think I’m the one with the best mindset among the five adults right now… A relative of mine has a child with autism, and I’ve had some contact with them, so I feel like I’m still able to stay relatively calm today. These things can’t be rushed. I don’t think we can cure them in just three days.” She fiddled with her bangs: “We’ll do our best, do everything we can, and see if things will be different when we leave.”

"I feel really sorry for the three children." Zhang Zesheng smiled helplessly. "After a day, I think everyone's mood was probably quite low. Today was really not a good day. I paid close attention to one of the children. He just kept drawing. During lunch, I heard from the nurse that he always eats the same food. If the food is changed, he won't eat it."

The atmosphere on the first day was heavy and oppressive. Ye Chu tried her best to do psychological work with Alix. All five of them, including Ye Chu, were worried that this atmosphere and situation might affect the mental health of the children.

"Why aren't they talking?" Niannian held Qian Yiyi's hand, feeling a little sad. "I let Yiyi play with my toy cars, but he doesn't seem to like them and doesn't talk to me."

The three children are codenamed One-One, Two-Two, and Three-Three.

"Waaah—" No one expected that Coco next to Zhang Zesheng would suddenly burst into tears.

In Ye Chu's memory, the little man Coco has always been very strong and acted like a big brother.

"Coco, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" Zhang Zesheng hurriedly squatted down to wipe his tears. The little guy didn't say anything, just sobbed and hiccuped as he cried.

"Coco, do you feel like your new friends today don't like you?" Ye Chu leaned over and wiped his tears with a tissue. Seeing him nod, she said, "No, Coco. Yi Yi and the others are sick and feeling unwell, which is why they couldn't respond to you. It's not that they don't like you."

Qian Yiyi chimed in, "Our Coco is a little man, you know. We should be with Lulu and the others, and help Yiyi and the others defeat their illness, okay? I saw you sharing cookies with everyone today, didn't I? You did a great job."

“Coco is really amazing.” Alix walked over and said, “Er'er got some cookies too.”

The "Er Er" that Alix mentioned is the one who is doing better among the three children. Today, he accepted the cookies that Coco gave him, which can be considered as a consolation to everyone here after a day of hard work.

"Mmm!" Coco responded with a thick nasal tone, which eased the atmosphere in the room.

"No matter what, we must do our best for the next two days, and strive for the best possible outcome before the end of the third day." Michael seemed to have regained his energy, patting his chest and promising the camera.

But only Ye Chu knew that Mai Ke was the one who was suffering the most among the five. Throughout the day, the usually most lively and active girl spoke very little. Even when it wasn't her shift, she would secretly go and observe the children's situation.

That night, Ye Chu sent Michael a private message.

Ye Chu: Coco, we did our best, don't blame yourself.

Michael: Yeah, I know, Chu Chu. I'm just really upset. I don't think I've ever felt this bad before in my life.

Michael: My family is very happy and harmonious, and I've always had a smile on my face. When I was their age, I was naughty and mischievous... My mom would chase after me with half a sugarcane, yelling that if I was naughty again, she would break my legs.

Ye Chu: Everyone's situation is different. I believe they will get better eventually; it's just a matter of time.

Michael: Okay, thank you, Sister Chu Chu.

Ye Chu: It's nothing. When Lulu was crying today, I noticed you weren't doing well either, so I was worried and wanted to talk to you. You should get some rest.

Ye Chu didn't reveal that she had been observing Lulu all day, but only mentioned Lulu briefly. Michael had always treated Lulu like his own child, and no matter what, he would try his best to appear strong in front of Lulu.

Michael: Okay, goodnight, Chu Chu.

Ye Chu: Good night.

After putting down his phone, Michael turned over in bed and finally relaxed enough to fall asleep.
