Chapter 177 Introduction by Steward Wang
Lu Zheng gently nudged her from behind and whispered, "Go up." His voice was weak, but encouraging.
Su Xiaonuan seemed to have made up her mind. She carefully lifted her foot, stepped onto the pedal, and crawled into the carriage.
Lu Zheng followed closely behind.
The two sat side by side in the middle row of seats, their bodies tense, their hands neatly placed on their knees, their eyes filled with curiosity and unease about the unfamiliar environment.
"This car... is so spacious." Su Xiaonuan said softly to Lu Zheng with a hint of envy, her fingers unconsciously touching the artificial leather seat beneath her, making a soft rubbing sound. "The chair is even made of leather, it's so soft to sit on, much more comfortable than our hard bench at home."
Lu Zheng nodded in agreement, uttering a muffled syllable of approval, but his gaze casually swept across the car window.
He keenly noticed that although the car window film was clear from the outside, it was completely dark from the inside. This was clearly not ordinary privacy protection, but rather a way to prevent either the inside or the outside from seeing into the car.
He and Su Xiaonuan exchanged a knowing glance, understanding each other without saying a word.
This Sacred Heart Society is indeed full of eeriness and a desire for control.
Sitting in the driver's seat, Wang Bo took in the words and actions of the two "country bumpkins" behind him through the rearview mirror, and a smug smile appeared on his lips.
He started the car and said in a relaxed tone, "Hold on tight. The company is a bit far from here, so you can take a look at the scenery of our city on the way."
The van smoothly drove out of the dilapidated neighborhood and merged into the gradually bustling traffic of the early morning.
Su Xiaonuan and Lu Zheng "obediently" did not look out the window, but instead kept their eyes down, looking at their thighs.
Seeing this scene in the rearview mirror, Wang Bo became even more certain.
These two are definitely "honest people" who are not very knowledgeable and are easy to manipulate.
As he drove, he chatted with them casually, his tone carrying the superiority of a benefactor. He asked about their hometowns and implied that working for him would lead to a bright future.
Su Xiaonuan and Lu Zheng played the roles of perfect listeners and grateful listeners, answering questions respectfully and occasionally interjecting with gratitude towards Wang Bo and anticipation for a "stable job" in the future.
The car wound its way through the area and finally entered what looked like a redeveloped old industrial zone.
Most of the buildings here are old, and the streets are relatively deserted.
The van slowed down at the gate of a compound with a vaguely written "Logistics Company" sign. The gatekeeper seemed to recognize Wang Bo's vehicle and let it pass directly.
The courtyard is larger inside than it appears from the outside, with several old five- or six-story buildings standing side by side, making it feel somewhat crowded and oppressive.
Wang Bo parked his car in front of a dormitory building that looked the most inconspicuous.
"We're here, let's get off." Wang Bo got off the bus first, his face beaming with the triumphant feeling of returning to his own territory.
He pointed to a window at the entrance of the dormitory building with a sign that read "Management Office" and said to Su Xiaonuan and Lu Zheng, who had gotten off the bus with him, "Go to that window on the first floor and find a female manager surnamed Li. Tell her that Wang Bo introduced you and ask her to arrange your room keys. I'll go report to my superiors first and come back to find you later."
After saying that, he patted off non-existent dust from his clothes, picked up his briefcase, and turned to walk towards another office building that looked more impressive.
Su Xiaonuan and Lu Zheng stood there, holding their two shabby snakeskin bags. They glanced at each other, their eyes filled with the "confusion" of newcomers and a hint of barely perceptible wariness.
They knew that stepping into this building meant the play was about to enter an even more dangerous scene.
Watching Wang Bo walk away, Su Xiaonuan and Lu Zheng seemed to come back to their senses, leaning on each other and carefully walking towards the "management office".
The window was quite high, and Su Xiaonuan had to stand on tiptoe to barely see inside.
A woman in her forties with curly hair and an impatient expression was sitting inside, cracking sunflower seeds while watching a melodramatic TV series on her phone.
Su Xiaonuan took a deep breath, put on a timid and ingratiating smile, and gently knocked on the window glass: "Excuse me...excuse me, are you Manager Li?"
Disturbed, the woman looked up impatiently, her gaze sweeping over Su Xiaonuan and Lu Zheng's shabby clothes and snakeskin bags. Her brows furrowed even more, and her tone was sharp: "What are you doing? Get to the point!"
Su Xiaonuan shrank back at her fierce tone, like a frightened animal, and her voice became even softer: "Um... it was Brother Wang Bo who sent us, saying... saying they wanted to get the house key from you..."
"Wang Bo?" Upon hearing this name, Manager Li's impatience froze instantly, then, like a Sichuan opera face-changing act, quickly transformed into a mixture of surprise, scrutiny, and even a hint of barely perceptible apprehension and... flattery? When her gaze fell on the two of them again, although it still held a scrutinizing quality, it was noticeably more polite.
"Oh—you were introduced by Manager Wang!" She put down the sunflower seeds in her hand, stood up, and forced a fairly warm smile on her face. "You should have said so earlier! Wait here, I'll get you the keys."
She turned around and rummaged through the large bunch of keys behind her, muttering, "The person Steward Wang brought personally, so we can't neglect him..." Soon, she found a bunch of silver keys that looked brand new and handed them out the window.
"Here you are, room 3012. It's on the third floor. Go up, turn right, and walk to the end."
Su Xiaonuan quickly took the key with both hands; the cold metallic touch made her fingertips tremble slightly.
A grateful smile appeared on her face, but then she seemed to remember something, hesitated for a moment, and stammered, her voice filled with embarrassment and worry: "Manager Li... Manager Li, is there... is there an extra charge for the accommodation? Brother Wang didn't say... we..."
She didn't finish her sentence, but her anxiety stemming from poverty was palpable.
Upon hearing this, Manager Li chuckled as if he had heard something amusing. Realizing his tone was inappropriate, he quickly composed himself and explained crisply, "Oh dear, Manager Wang personally introduced you, so you're all on the team! The company will cover your accommodation! Don't worry about it! Settle in, work hard, and Manager Wang won't treat you unfairly!"
No money required!
Su Xiaonuan immediately realized that Wang Bo was at least a "manager" with a certain status and authority in this organization.
Her face showed a sudden, immense relief, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from her shoulders. She let out a long, genuine sigh of relief, and a warm, grateful smile spread across her face as she repeatedly bowed to Manager Li, saying, "Thank you, Manager Li! Thank you so much!"
