Chapter 116 Modifying the Street Vendor Cart
Su Xiaonuan took out the equipment she had prepared in advance—a baseball cap of the same style but different color, a black mask that could cover half of her face, and large sunglasses that could almost block all eye contact.
The two helped each other put it on, and when they looked in the mirror, they almost burst out laughing.
Where were the two pretty girls in the mirror? They were clearly two sneaky, suspicious guys. They didn't look like they were out shopping. They looked more like celebrities afraid of being recognized, or... human traffickers preparing to do something bad.
"Aren't we going a bit too far?" An Ran looked at herself in the mirror, somewhat hesitant.
"Safety first, keep a low profile." Su Xiaonuan patted her shoulder, her tone firm. "Let's go!"
The two went downstairs and into the underground parking garage.
When An Ran saw the completely transformed "rustic wooden campervan," her eyes widened in surprise: "This...this is your car? You went to modify this this morning? You did it so quickly?"
Su Xiaonuan nodded without changing her expression: "Yes, I asked a friend for help. They're very efficient." She opened the car door. "Get in."
The two got into the unremarkable, even somewhat "old" RV and drove out of the neighborhood.
Sure enough, the car drove on the road without attracting any further attention.
Occasionally, passersby might catch a glimpse of it and simply assume it's a privately modified vehicle used for camping or travel.
However, when they stopped at a traffic light and rolled down their windows for some fresh air, the driver in the next lane glanced at them curiously—after all, both of them were wearing hats, masks, and sunglasses, completely covered up, which seemed particularly out of place on this early autumn afternoon.
"What are those two people doing in the car? They're all covered up so tightly..."
"I don't know, it's weird..."
Su Xiaonuan and An Ran exchanged a glance and smiled helplessly behind their sunglasses.
Their destination was a relatively large wetland park on the outskirts of the city, where the environment was pleasant and the crowds were relatively dispersed.
Su Xiaonuan planned to wander around the neighborhood first, and then find a suitable place to set up a stall to sell roasted lamb legs in the evening.
Just as they parked their car in an open-air parking lot near the wetland park, Su Xiaonuan's phone rang.
She took it out and saw that the caller ID showed "Lu Zheng".
Huh? Why would he call me? Isn't today his day off?
Su Xiaonuan answered the call with some surprise: "Hello? Officer Lu?"
A deep voice came from the other end of the phone, the background seemingly quiet: "Hmm. Where are you setting up your stall today?"
Su Xiaonuan was even more surprised. Old Lu was... offering to patronize the business?
"I...I'm out for a walk with my friends to relax, and we haven't decided where to set up our stall yet," she said truthfully, her voice sounding a little muffled through her mask.
"Oh," Lu Zheng responded, paused as if considering his words, and then continued, "I'm off today. If... if you've decided on a place, let me know. I'll come... try your cooking, and while I'm at it... keep an eye on things for you."
Su Xiaonuan was stunned for a moment, and the surprise in her heart turned into a warm feeling and a little bit of amusement.
This cold-faced police officer actually used such a euphemistic phrase as "try some food" and even offered to "keep an eye on things" for her? It seems her cooking skills are quite powerful! They were able to attract this workaholic out of her day off.
She felt a surge of smug satisfaction, attributing Lu Zheng's rare initiative to her unparalleled culinary skills.
"I see..." Su Xiaonuan's eyes darted around. Although she felt that she was capable enough to handle most situations, who would complain about having more bodyguards? Especially a "bodyguard" of Lu Zheng's caliber—he made her feel incredibly safe!
She smiled, her voice sweet even through her mask: "That's great! Officer Lu, we're just strolling around the wetland park in the west of the city right now, and we haven't decided on a final location yet. How about... you come and follow us? Consider it protecting the safety of us two 'vulnerable women'?"
She deliberately emphasized the words "weak woman" a little more, with a touch of mischief.
There was a two-second silence on the other end of the phone, as if they hadn't expected Su Xiaonuan to be so "rude".
“…Okay. Send me your current location.” Lu Zheng’s voice was emotionless, but he agreed readily.
"Okay! I'll send it to you right away!" Su Xiaonuan replied cheerfully, hung up the phone, and immediately sent the location.
She turned and winked at An Ran, though An Ran couldn't see it through her sunglasses.
Su Xiaonuan said cheerfully, "Done! I've found a free, super-strong bodyguard and potential customer!"
An Ran couldn't help but laugh when she saw her slightly smug expression.
With Lu Zheng around, it certainly makes people feel much more at ease.
The two locked their car and decided to take a walk in the wetland park first, wait for Lu Zheng, and also check out suitable locations for setting up a stall that night.
The afternoon sun in autumn casts dappled shadows through the leaves, and a gentle breeze carries the moist scent of the lake and the fragrance of grass and trees, temporarily dispelling the anxieties brought by the internet sensation and potential dangers, allowing one to relax.
Not long after, a low-profile black SUV pulled up in the parking lot near the wetland park, and Lu Zheng got out of the car.
He wasn't wearing his police uniform today; instead, he wore a dark gray casual jacket and matching trousers, which made him look even more upright.
Although his face still carried his usual coldness, the sharpness in his eyes seemed to have softened, revealing a relaxed and peaceful feeling that was different from when he was working.
His gaze swept across the parking lot and quickly locked onto the conspicuous wooden-colored vintage campervan, and two figures beside it... wrapped up tightly, as if they were about to carry out a secret mission.
Lu Zheng paused, a barely perceptible look of astonishment flashing in his eyes.
He walked closer, looking at Su Xiaonuan and An Ran, who were wearing the same baseball caps, large sunglasses, and black masks, with only their chins showing. His thin lips moved slightly, and he was about to ask what the new situation was—
"Officer Lu! You're here!" Su Xiaonuan rushed forward, beaming as if she'd seen a savior, and naturally took his arm. "The scenery here is really nice; we were just about to take a stroll. Want to come along?"
Her movements were fluid, and her tone intimate, as if she were naturally holding the arm of her own brother.
Lu Zheng's body stiffened instantly as he felt the soft touch and warm body temperature of the girl on his arm, and his Adam's apple bobbed involuntarily.
The questions he wanted to ask were swallowed back by this sudden intimacy, and he could only awkwardly hum in response, letting Su Xiaonuan pull him into the park.
An Ran followed behind the two, watching the pair in front of her—one petite and lively, the other tall and aloof yet slightly awkward—her eyes sparkling with gossip and excitement, and the corners of her mouth involuntarily turning up in a smile.
