Chapter 171 Compensation
With a loud bang, a large section of the wall separating the two courtyards collapsed.
The ladder was unstable and swayed twice, and Ye Rou fell into the haystack in the next yard.
"Little darling!" Jiang Chen threw away the ladder and climbed up the wall to see Ye Rou.
Ye Rou struggled to reach out her hand from the haystack and waved, "I'm fine."
Jiang Chen walked over and pulled the person up, carefully checking her arms and legs, and only breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that she was not injured.
Seeing his gloomy face, as if he was about to lose his temper and scold her, Ye Rou immediately grabbed Jiang Chen's hand and said softly, "You scared me to death."
"There's nothing I can do to you." Jiang Chen sighed, plucked the grass leaves off her head, grabbed her wrist with his backhand, and pulled her up.
The mute woman appeared at the gap and gestured that the meal was ready.
"I'm just hungry." Ye Rou pulled Jiang Chen back.
"Stop!" A sharp explosion sounded.
Ye Rou turned around and saw a huge group of twenty or so people standing at the gap in the neighboring yard. Lin Chunhua, who was making the most noise, pointed at the broken wall and shouted, "The wall is broken, you have to pay for it!"
"We'll find someone to rebuild the wall." Ye Rou said as she looked at her hand. She really didn't use much strength in that slap just now, so how did the wall collapse?
"Just building a wall is enough!" Lin Chunhua stepped forward, pointing at the haystacks mixed with bricks, and shouted, "These haystacks are dirty and can't be used. You have to pay for it!"
She knew that a very rich man had moved into the yard next door and had driven out all the original residents. He had been repairing the house every day for more than two months, and the materials brought in were all expensive and good things. She had been coveting it for a long time, and now that she had caught this opportunity, she was not willing to give it up no matter what.
Ye Rou stopped and asked her, "What do you want me to compensate you for?"
"Pay me money!" Lin Chunhua said loudly, hands on her hips, "Pay my family two hundred yuan!"
"What? Two hundred yuan!" Wang Honghong stood at the gap in the wall and looked at Lin Chunhua sarcastically, "You're a blackmailer."
Lin Chunhua was about to curse back when several hands reached out from behind and grabbed her.
She turned around impatiently, only to see Qian Meiyu and Hua Xiaoyu approaching.
Qian Meiyun put her hands on her hips and said unhappily, "Lin Chunhua, we also have a share of these haystacks. We can't just give you the compensation!"
Hua Xiaoyu said weakly, "Yes, Chunhua, let's discuss the compensation among the three of us."
Lin Chunhua frowned and looked at the two of them, "What compensation do you want?"
"My family also wants two hundred yuan." Qian Meiyu said immediately, her eyes glowing green as she spoke.
"Okay." Lin Chunhua looked at Hua Xiaoyu, her eyes softening a little: "Xiaoyu, what compensation do you want?"
Hua Xiaoyu is the poorest girl in their compound. Her husband died, and she lives cautiously with her daughter-in-law and grandson. She never has conflicts with others in the compound and seems easy to bully. The families in the compound rarely make things difficult for her.
Hua Xiaoyu said softly: "Chunhua, let's not ask for money."
As she spoke, she glanced at the yard next door. That side was spacious and beautiful, while this side was crowded and oppressive. Then her eyes shifted and fell on the young couple. They looked young and innocent, and it was obvious that they were easy to manipulate.
"Sister Chunhua, what our courtyard lacks most right now is not money." Hua Xiaoyu said softly: "Why are you and Sister Meiyun arguing? Isn't it because there is not enough space?"
She pointed to the yard next door and said with a gentle smile, "The yard next door is very big."
Lin Chunhua and Qian Meiyu looked at each other and immediately understood.
They looked at the young girl who had fallen in and said in unison, "We don't want any money. If you build another wall, your yard will move back ten meters!"
"..." Ye Rou looked at Jiang Chen and asked in confusion: "Do we both look like the same people who were taken advantage of?"
Jiang Chen rubbed her cheek and said in a very cold voice: "Teach them a lesson, and they will learn to restrain themselves."
He looked at the people next door with a serious look.
This yard belongs to Old Man Zhou and was originally meant to be recycled and cleaned up. He was busy renovating the yard some time ago and was unable to do so. Now it seems that he should speed up the process.
Jiang Chen took Ye Rou in his arms and walked towards his yard. "Don't worry about them."
Ye Rou followed Jiang Chen and turned around, and saw Wang Honghong lying in the gap, seemingly studying something.
"Stop!" Seeing that they were about to leave, Lin Chunhua followed them relentlessly and was about to cross the yard to catch up with them.
The mute woman blocked Lin Chunhua.
Lin Chunhua was frightened by the mute woman's face, "What the hell!"
The mute woman's gaze remained unchanged as she stood in front of Lin Chunhua.
"Brother Jiang, there's something wrong with this wall!" Wang Honghong stood up and brushed off the dirt in her hands. "This wall has been hollowed out. These haystacks are blocking my view."
How could such a big wall, with three layers of thick bricks, fall down just by my sister-in-law hitting it?
He was puzzled and looked at the wall carefully, only to find that two of the three layers of bricks had been dug out, leaving only one layer of wall. The reason why it had not collapsed was probably because of the haystacks on the top of the wall.
Ye Rou understood. She pointed at the people in the next yard and said unhappily, "You stole the bricks."
"How is that possible?" Lin Chunhua moved the haystack away and looked at the number of bricks that had fallen down. There were indeed not many.
Her eyes swept between Qian Meiyu and Hua Xiaoyu.
Hua Xiaoyu's eyes were frank, but Qian Meiyu felt guilty and didn't dare to look at her at all.
"Okay! Qian Meiyu, no wonder you said you didn't steal my bricks, it turns out you just moved the wall bricks!" Lin Chunhua was furious. These wall tiles belonged to several of their families, and now they were all taken away by this bitch. She couldn't get the compensation that was right in front of her.
Hua Xiaoyu glanced at the yard next door again, and then looked at Qian Meiyu with a look mixed with hidden disgust.
It's really more of a hindrance than a help.
"I didn't." Qian Meiyu bit her lip and refused to admit it.
Jiang Chen helped Ye Rou back to the yard through the gap and said coldly, "Call the police."
"Okay!" Wang Honghong agreed readily, and he turned around and ran out.
"No!" Qian Meiyu yelled anxiously. She said pitifully, "We had no choice but to move the wall bricks. Our children are grown up, and we have two more children to bring back to Beijing with their families. We have to build a house, but we are poor and can't afford red bricks, so we had this evil idea."
She looked at the pretty girl with a kinder face and said in a more pitiful tone, "Don't call the police. We really have no other choice."
Qian Meiyu waved as she spoke, and her daughter-in-law understood and pushed her grandson over.
She hugged her grandson, bent her knees, and cried, "Girl, look at my grandson, he is so pale and thin from hunger. Our family is really too poor."
"Grandma!" Her grandson Zhuangzhuang was pinched by his grandmother and felt the pain and burst into tears.
"So that's how it is." A gentle voice sounded.
Seeing the young girl give in, Qian Meiyu's lips curled up in satisfaction.
Ye Rou sighed and said, "Since your family is so pitiful, we won't call the police."
