Chapter 19 Encounter Time and space seemed to stand still for a moment, and we both…
People and horses were thrown into chaos, and everything was in complete disarray.
I was surrounded by a large group of maids and guards as I fled out, stumbling and falling several times, just like a disgraced king fleeing from his kingdom.
The maids and guards surrounded me closely, not out of loyalty, but because they felt safer with me.
I was surrounded by generals and a large number of guards.
Several generals led us toward the west gate of the castle. A dozen or so bloodied zombies rushed at us, but the generals killed them one by one with a single strike.
Several times the zombies attacked me, and amidst my screams, the generals swiftly decapitated them, blood gushing out, leaving me covered in blood all over my face and body.
Covered in the stench of blood and decay, I was helped away by maids and servants while vomiting uncontrollably. When I reached the west gate of the castle, I was astonished to see a towering black spire that seemed to reach into the clouds. It was truly towering, with white clouds and a misty atmosphere surrounding it, like a celestial tower.
"My lord, hurry up, we'll seal off the tower immediately!" the leading general urged urgently.
Ah, climb up?
Perhaps seeing me in a daze, the leading general suddenly yanked me, dragging me haphazardly into the tower.
I was in so much pain that I was wincing, but all I could do was start climbing the stairs.
The roars of the zombies grew louder and louder, drifting in through the small tower windows on each floor. I and a group of maids who had luckily survived desperately climbed up, even if our legs were too tired, we had to use our hands to climb up.
If only there were an elevator here, like the one in Castle Black. But the prince is clearly poor and can't afford one.
Halfway up, my robes were soaked through, and sweat dripped from my hair. Surprisingly, my body was still full of energy. Apart from the general, most of the maids and guards who were with me collapsed to the ground, only able to rest for a while before crawling again. Only one or two were able to keep up with me.
Just as they were about to quicken their pace, a deafening roar of zombies came, along with a shrill cry.
"The zombies have breached the tower's defenses and broken in!"
"Help--"
Before I could react, I was being pulled forward by several generals ahead. They were moving very fast, and I had to concentrate to keep up.
“We have to find a way to save them…” I said breathlessly.
But nobody paid any attention to me.
The generals ran incredibly fast, and I was pulled along with them at breakneck speed.
The roars of the zombies grew closer, and their screams grew louder, as if they were right next to our ears.
"Awooo—" A heavy roar accompanied by the sound of wind came from behind me. Before I could turn around, a general in front of me raised his long sword and brought it down. The putrid smell of blood splattered all over me.
To my horror, I saw a zombie fall to the ground, followed by a horde of zombies rushing towards me. All the maids and servants were killed, and some of them had turned into zombies, baring their teeth as they pounced on me.
Several generals jumped out and fought fiercely with the zombies, amidst the flashing of swords and splattering of blood.
I didn't bring any weapons and didn't know how to fight zombies with my bare hands, so I could only desperately try to escape upwards while the generals were fighting.
The screams of the defeated generals echoed intermittently. "Awooo—" Another zombie roared. I turned around in fear, and a blood-soaked zombie pounced on me. I screamed and ran away. Another zombie pounced on me, and I fled again in a sorry state. But then two zombies viciously pounced on me.
I couldn't help but scream. With a few sharp sounds, blood rained down, and two zombies fell to the ground, their bodies sliced into five or six pieces. Just then, I was horrified to see another version of myself appear in the rain of blood. It was like looking in a mirror; I saw her clearly, and she saw me too.
It was "I" who saved me.
A completely unfamiliar "me".
It was incredibly unfamiliar.
Time and space seemed to stand still for a moment.
I was stunned.
I was also stunned.
Neither of us could believe it.
A few seconds later, two zombies roared and pounced, and she, the "I," reacted quickly by swinging her longsword to slash at them.
One zombie after another charged in, and each one was cleanly and swiftly taken down amidst the flash of sword light...
The "I" in the blood rain was covered in blood, and her messy long hair was also stained red, like bleached red hair. Her eyes were bloodshot, sharp and fierce, like an evil Asura who came out of hell.
Although my physical strength was failing, my swordsmanship was extremely strong, and my killing intent emanated from within, which strangely enhanced my combat power.
"I" suddenly rushed over and pulled me, who was still dazed, upwards. My wrist was almost torn off, and intense pain spread throughout my body, but I endured the pain and kept up.
After running a few steps, several more zombies pounced on us. "I" threw myself aside and fought again.
I was thrown to the tower window, where I could see right outside—
In the plaza beneath the tower, tens of thousands of zombies swarmed, stretching to the horizon like dark clouds. They howled around the tower in unison, like a terrifying inhuman army.
The tower gates had already been breached, and the castle appeared to have been completely captured.
My legs went weak and I almost collapsed.
"Hurry up and run up!" I shouted as I turned around.
I snapped out of my daze and hurriedly scrambled upwards, using both my hands and feet.
The tower gate was narrow, and the corridor was also narrow, so I stumbled and staggered as I rushed forward.
I stumbled up several floors, and "I" caught up with him, my longsword dripping foul-smelling blood.
"Damn, it's too slow." "I" cursed, and kicked my butt. I was sent flying up two flights of stairs, fell at the corner, and landed face-first in the mud.
I cried out in pain, about to start cursing, when I saw "I" rush to the tower window beside me, pull aside a brick under the window, and a golden rose suddenly appeared. "I" muttered a few strange incantations, and the golden rose emitted a gradually dazzling light.
The next second, just as several zombies rushed up and pounced on us, a golden fence fell heavily, successfully blocking them.
The zombies angrily reached out from behind the golden fence, roaring as they tried to grab us, but each time they missed...
Even through the golden fence, I was still terrified.
"What are you standing there for?" I yelled at me again, "Hurry up and get to the top of the tower."
This time, I felt a surge of energy and was able to climb to the top of the tower without any problems.
Looking out from a high vantage point, I witnessed an even more terrifying scene.
The entire castle was surrounded by a surging tide of zombies, their arms raised high, their roars growing louder and louder, turning it into a complete zombie city.
My legs went weak again, and I was about to collapse.
A slender arm gripped me tightly. "Useless," came the voice, filled with resentment.
I'm just an ordinary person, I admit I'm naive and haven't seen much of the world.
The sky suddenly darkened—
This darkness wasn't a true darkening, but rather the sky being blotted out by thousands upon thousands of bats. They spread their black wings, like patches of black clouds covering most of the sky.
Even more terrifying, the bat's claws were also clutching a dark, murky package. As it landed, there was a deafening boom, a flash of red light, and several zombies were instantly blasted away.
My God, bats can throw bombs?
I exclaimed, "Is our reinforcements here? Are they going to blow up the zombies?"
A cold laugh drifted over, "I always thought you were a bit dim-witted, and now I see you really were."
"Bullshit!" I retorted angrily, "What else could it be but reinforcements?"
I leaned against another tower window and said slowly, "You can only think in one line."
No sooner had I finished speaking than several loud explosions struck the tower, shaking me to the ground. A dozen bats carrying explosive charges flew toward the tower, their claws simultaneously releasing the charges—if it weren't for the wind that day, blowing the lighter charges in different directions, the tower would surely have been blown away.
The tower shook violently, and countless bricks were knocked off the walls.
It turns out the bats' real target was me, and they were relentlessly attacking the tower I was in.
I gasped several times.
—The bats seem to be circling around the zombies, going back and forth on the "battlefield," but if you look closely, you'll see that after circling a few times, only a small number of bats shed the explosive packs, while the others carry the explosive packs and fly back towards the tower in circles...
Bats can even use illusions; I was utterly exasperated.
If it weren't for the wind today, and the fact that bats aren't very sensitive, this tower would have been blown away long ago.
I looked for help at the other "me," only to find that "I" was leaning against the corner of the wall, squinting, seemingly asleep amidst the "earthquake."
...
Isn't he afraid of dying?
Explosions continued to rang out, and explosive charges rained down on the tower, causing it to sway precariously.
In the midst of extreme panic, I suddenly calmed down.
Once I calmed down, my keen senses alerted me, and I spotted several people riding on black birds hidden among the bats. Because the sky was completely dark, and these people had deliberately crouched low to hide on the birds, they hadn't been noticed before.
I closed my eyes and calmed myself down, and I seemed to vaguely hear them making some kind of strange whistling sound.
I suddenly remembered that bats use echolocation to fly, enabling them to forage in dim environments and fly freely around obstacles such as trees and buildings. Research by Richard Holland, a biologist at Princeton University in New Jersey, has discovered that some bats also possess a "compass-like" sensory function, allowing them to return to their nests from distant locations using the Earth's magnetic field.
In other words, if a magnetic field environment is artificially created, it may cause bats to deviate from their correct course, making them fly further and further away from home in another direction.
The whistles emitted by the people riding the blackbirds may have created some kind of "magnetic field," controlling the bats to throw explosive charges at the tower.
I immediately pointed to the sky outside the tower and said to "me," "There are some people riding on black birds there; they are the ones who control the bats."
I looked at myself with a mixture of belief and doubt.
"It's true," I swore. "I'm not kidding."
"I" stared at me coldly, without a flicker of emotion in my eyes.
...
Isn't that too calm? They're facing a formidable enemy.
I suddenly stood up lazily. "I'll say a sentence, and you repeat it after me."
What does that mean? I was completely confused, but then I saw "me" hand the long sword in my hand, "Take it."
