Chapter 219 "I can marry you."...
After one night, Desen's condition worsened. All the royal physicians surrounded him, trying more than a dozen kinds of decoctions and several kinds of external herbal poultices. By evening, his condition had finally stabilized, and his breathing had become easier.
"Thank you, Lana," Desen said weakly after the physicians had left. "Without you, how could any of the palace's physicians have come to see me?"
I used a hot towel to wipe the cold sweat from his forehead and the bloodstains on his neck and chest; he was injured almost all over his body.
"Your father was truly cruel to you," I sighed, "He hurt you so badly."
“It’s not just him,” Derson’s voice was weaker, “it’s also the work of Bernard and several illegitimate children, as well as former political enemies. They can’t tolerate me living.”
"Just how many people have you offended in the past?" I sighed.
“We’ve offended people since birth; we’re born with an original sin.” His voice was barely audible. “We’re destined to stand in our brothers’ way; we’re all each other’s enemies.”
I wiped away his cold sweat and said, "Take a rest for a while and don't think too much about it."
He was exhausted, having been up all day, and slowly closed his eyes.
As I stepped outside, I was surprised to see Daio leaning against the wall, waiting for me. He wore a deep red robe, and his short, golden hair shimmered in the firelight of the corridor.
“I never thought you were someone who would stay by your husband’s side,” Daio said lazily. “I misjudged you before; I thought you were a womanizer.”
"Oh, how did you get the idea that I'm flirting with other women?" I walked ahead, and he followed behind.
“You had many men before you got married,” he said with a smile. “Bernot, Salga, Mamboa, and my uncle.”
"You call this a lot? It's less than the number of your mistresses."
"How can women compare to men?" he laughed. "Women are more susceptible to diseases, while men are less so; women can give birth, while men can't. What if a woman gives birth to a child that isn't her own? Wouldn't the man then have to raise someone else's child?"
"So you think it's okay for men to have multiple mistresses, but women should die for having multiple lovers?"
“I don’t want to argue with you,” he suddenly took two steps forward and stood beside me. “What I want to say is that I may have wanted to marry you before because of the superpowered woman’s abilities, but now, I want to marry you for you.”
"Oh, what do you mean?"
"It's not because you're a superpowered woman, but because you are you that I want to be with you."
"Is it because I saved Denson?"
"Yes, you are a woman who truly loves her husband."
I stopped and laughed. "You think I'm a virtuous wife and loving mother again? You're overthinking it. I've never been."
"If I think so, then it's fine." As he said this, he pinned me against the corridor wall and kissed me fiercely. I was caught off guard and he kissed me squarely.
His thick tongue probed into my lips, relentlessly teasing my tongue tip. I couldn't escape; he was relentlessly entangled with me. Our tongues swirled together, exchanging breaths and saliva. His scent overwhelmed me, making it hard to breathe.
He held my waist firmly, his knees pressing against my buttocks to keep me from collapsing. I was completely powerless from his kisses, with no chance to resist or fight back.
He pressed me hard against the wall, kissing me wildly and unrestrainedly, panting heavily, on the verge of losing control.
It was midnight, and the corridor was deserted. He forcefully pulled off my long skirt, and his trousers had somehow come loose as well…
We didn't stop all night, and it wasn't until noon that I finally couldn't stay awake any longer and fell asleep.
When I woke up, I was already in my room. I opened my eyes and felt a brief moment of confusion before I suddenly became alert and sat up. The sheet fell off, and I felt a slight chill on my body. I was then surprised to find that I was naked.
I put on the pajamas from the bedside table, got out of bed, and went into the bathroom to wash my face. Looking at my disheveled hair in the mirror, I thought of last night's madness.
What should I do? How can I face Daio after this? I couldn't control myself and had this kind of relationship with him. I covered my face; I really didn't want to face it.
After taking a quick shower, I changed into a clean long cotton dress, combed my messy hair, and went to visit Desen.
I suspect that Derson must know what happened last night. We were making so much noise in the hallway, he couldn't have missed it. But he looked at me, smiled slightly, and didn't say anything. Instead, he said that he was feeling better today, that his wound wasn't hurting as much as yesterday, and that his breathing was much better.
I wiped his face with a hot towel again and said gently, "It's good that you feel better."
He looked at me gently, smiling faintly.
Just as I was about to leave, he suddenly said to me, "I've had many mistresses. When I was in power, they all treated me well, but when I was exiled, not one of them came to see me off. Do you remember Rita? She was one of my favorite mistresses."
I nodded. Of course I remembered. A mistress dressed like a jewelry store when attending a dinner party, covered in expensive jewelry from head to toe, which showed how much Derson doted on her.
“I thought she would come, but she didn’t,” Desen said slowly. “When I was of use to her, she would do everything she could to please me; when I was no longer of use to her, she avoided me like the plague.”
"Isn't that how things are in this world?" I said calmly.
“But when we were in love, I thought we were different.” He slowly looked at me. “So, remember, once interests change, you can’t trust anyone, not even your lover who was once your sweetheart.”
Was he trying to tell me something? I frowned, about to ask, but a maid's voice suddenly appeared behind me, "Princess Lanna, His Majesty invites you to dinner."
I got up, offered a few more words of comfort to Desen, and then left.
Pushing open the door, I discovered that Daio was actually waiting outside.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
The maid who came out quickly left, while Daio lazily put his arm around my waist. I frowned and tried to break free, but he pulled me even tighter.
“I don’t want to go in. I’m afraid I won’t be able to stop myself from hitting him because he’s your husband,” he said.
"What's it to you?!"
"How can it not be my business?" he said, somewhat displeased. "Don't try to deny it last night."
“We’re both adults, what’s past is past.” I walked forward, and he held my waist tightly, refusing to let go.
“What’s past is just last night; there’s tonight, tomorrow night, and countless other nights to come,” he said.
“I don’t want to be one of your mistresses,” I said.
"I can marry you."
“I have a husband.”
“Don’t think I don’t know you’ve never slept with your husband,” he whispered in my ear. “He abandoned you on your wedding night to be with his mistress, and then he was messing around with different mistresses. Why do you still care about him?”
“Don’t interfere in my affairs,” I said coldly. “And it’s none of your business what happens between my husband and me.”
His face turned cold, and he loosened his grip on my waist.
"You really think our relationship was just a one-night stand?"
I looked at him and replied, "Yes."
He got angry, turned around and strode away, leaving me alone in the empty corridor.
I ate dinner alone in my room, and afterwards went to the Elf Queen's tomb alone. This was the first time I had ever visited her tomb at night. The night was very quiet, especially in front of her tomb. I stood silently before her tomb, and my chaotic thoughts began to calm down.
It's always the same; whenever I'm feeling restless, coming here always helps me find some peace.
On the way back, I was walking slowly alone when I suddenly felt someone behind me. I turned around abruptly and saw Artis. He was dressed in a black robe and a black cloak, and I had no idea how long he had been following me.
"You've been following me the whole time?" I asked in surprise.
He nodded with a smile.
"Why are you following me?" I asked.
"Why are you going to the cemetery alone? It's dangerous so late."
“What danger is there? This is your island. Besides, you can send guards with me; you don’t need to come here yourself.” I then asked, “Did you need something from me?”
"I just want to follow you," he said with a smile.
I ignored him and kept walking. He followed me, walking with me through the courtyard, corridor and stairs, until we finally arrived at the door of my room.
“I’m glad you didn’t agree to Daio’s request to be his long-term lover,” he suddenly said.
“He proposed to me, not asked to be my long-term lover,” I said.
He smiled and said, "It won't be that easy for him to get married. He has to go through many rounds of scrutiny from the elders of various clans. Before that, he can only be a long-term lover."
"Did you come to me just to talk about this?" I asked.
"What I want to tell you is that I still care about you, and I hope you can still consider me."
I was stunned. He smiled gently at me and then left.
"Why do they want to find me?" I muttered to myself as I sat in front of the fireplace, fiddling with the burning firewood. "Am I still the Kingmaker? At least I didn't manage to create Derson."
"For love and romance? That's even more impossible." I stretched. "They all have plenty of female resources, they're never short of women to date, they're all seasoned veterans in the dating game."
I was still pondering this, and it was past midnight when I suddenly received a message from Attis. Knowing I was still awake, the maid came in to report, "Your Highness, we have just received news that King Amur has died suddenly, and the Eastern Territory is in complete chaos."
Sudden death? Why sudden death? Wasn't he already seriously injured? If he was going to die, it should be from his injuries, not from them.
The maid seemed to sense my confusion and explained, "I heard that his previous knife wound had been almost healed, but his old ailment relapsed. His old headaches and chest pains suddenly broke out in the middle of the night two days ago, and he died suddenly."
The news, which was two days ago, reached the island by midnight tonight, which must have been the fastest it could get.
Soon, I heard that Attis hastily convened a meeting to urgently discuss the possible situation in the eastern region and its impact on Achia.
“The most likely successor to the throne is Bernard, but he is of mixed race and may face resistance from the high nobility,” Artis told me after the meeting. “Desen is currently on his deathbed and is not King Amur’s biological son, so his chances of inheriting the throne are slim. As for the other illegitimate children, they may be used by some high nobility to have children and then elevate them to the throne.”
"How many illegitimate children are still alive?" I asked.
“Five worked in the capital as purchasing agents, accountants, tutors, and palace stewards, while three were exiled to the wilderness,” Artis said clearly.
"I'm afraid none of these eight people will survive." Knowing Bernard as I do, he won't let them go easily.
“It’s a sensitive time right now, he shouldn’t do something so immoral.” Artis frowned.
But less than three days after he said that, news came from the East. In one night, Bernard killed five of his illegitimate sons in the capital and wiped out their descendants. The other three who had been exiled were also beheaded, and all the houses in the exile area were burned to the ground. It was publicly stated that the three illegitimate sons died in a fire.
