Chapter 37 Let's Get Married "If I remember correctly, you're going to marry..."
Another sleepless night. I stayed up all night in the Imperial Study, poring over various documents. Back in the day, I was only this diligent when preparing for the college entrance exam. Being a lord is not something everyone can do!
As dawn broke, Bernard, covered with a blanket, was fast asleep in his armchair.
He slept soundly, having slept for four hours since midnight, while I haven't closed my eyes for a single second.
My gaze suddenly stopped on a line of inconspicuous small print—
"Twenty years ago, signs of natural disasters were already emerging, but they only occurred in a small part of the country and were not serious, so they could be resolved with human intervention."
I checked the date; it was a record made twenty years ago.
I scrolled back, trying to find similar records from the last ten years, but I couldn't find any. The most I could find was: "Natural disasters have begun to spread in recent years, but fortunately they haven't reached the capital."
The snow outside the window was falling heavier and heavier. I stood in front of the French windows and felt like I was about to be buried in the snow.
"What are you doing standing there?" Bernard's deep, magnetic voice suddenly came from behind.
“You’re awake,” I said, turning around. “I’m asking you, how long can the materials your castle uses to burn the earth dragons last? What if they run out? Won’t you freeze to death?”
Bernard put on a white robe and said lazily, "They won't freeze to death, but they'll rebel."
"The reaction should have started by now, right?" I said.
Bernard looked at me with great interest. "Oh, how so?"
This was the first time he had shown me such interest, which made me a little uncomfortable. I turned around and said, “I’m guessing from your fragmented records. Twenty years ago, you already had records of natural disasters, but only a brief mention, indicating that you didn’t take them seriously. There were no detailed records for decades afterward, but in fact, the disasters had already begun to spread, and many people’s interests had been harmed. However, your ruling class didn’t pay attention to it, so these people naturally felt dissatisfied. With no other way to appeal, they could only resort to extreme measures to demonstrate. But judging from the fact that you have no records, such demonstrations should have been suppressed quickly. I guess it was small-scale marches, war, or assassinations.”
Bernard walked up to me, smiling as he stared at me. "Interesting, you guessed pretty close."
“The previous owners of this territory must have launched a war of attrition, but they must have been utterly defeated, and the lord met a terrible end. Although this place is barren, it is an important border region, but because of the tragic events that occurred here, it is considered an ominous place,” I looked into his eyes, “so you were sent here. You are the son of the Elf Queen, the son of your father, and also your father’s mortal enemy.”
Therefore, this is why the king sent him to the important border region.
Bernard's fingers traced my chin, his smile widening. "Clever."
I took two steps back and shook my head. "I've never been a smart person, not even growing up. I can only guess because I've seen enough."
“You’re still smart.” He took two steps closer to me. “Let me see you, let me see you clearly.”
I frowned and dodged the question. "Stop flirting with me. You'd be better off using that on other women."
"Oh?" His smile almost overflowed from his lips. "How have I treated you?"
I didn't say anything. Just then, I heard Mrs. Jane's voice from outside the door, "My lord, Miss Eve has prepared breakfast and is waiting for you in the dining room."
Bernard took my arm as we walked into the simple Stone Tavern.
I hate it when he clings to me like a koala, but he says that's how a chief mistress should be.
Even though Ai Fu wasn't angry to see us being so affectionate, she smiled and poured me a full glass of hot milk.
"My lord, I have prepared for you today..." Before Eve could finish speaking, Bernard suddenly released me and rushed over, sweeping all the food on the table over like autumn leaves in the wind. Plates and cups were thrown to the ground with a loud bang.
I was stunned, and Aifu was so shocked she almost spilled milk on the back of her hand.
Bernard smiled at me as if nothing had happened, hooked his arm around mine, and said sweetly, "My lord, I don't like eating these things. Let's have the cook make something else."
Before I could even react, he pulled me out of the restaurant.
"Keep your distance from this traitor," he said to me casually.
A gust of wind, carrying snowflakes, rushed towards me. I wrapped my black fox fur cloak tighter around myself and simply hummed in response.
We won't be able to enjoy delicious food anymore, sigh!
We walked side by side down the corridor, where the wind and snow were blowing in. Suddenly, Bernard grabbed my hand, and I looked at him, puzzled.
Let's get married.
I was stunned.
He smiled and tiptoed to brush the snowflakes off my face.
"If I remember correctly, you're getting married to your fiancée in just a few days."
"So what?" he said with a smile, "it can be cancelled."
"Can it be cancelled?" I asked skeptically.
"certainly."
His relaxed and friendly demeanor made me wary, but I didn't show it.
I said casually, "Then let's talk about it after you cancel the engagement."
"You don't believe me?"
I chuckled to myself. Of course I believed in his abilities, but I didn't believe in the sincerity of his marriage proposal. I wondered what he was up to this time.
"I believe you, of course I believe you," I said with a smile. He wouldn't even look at me, how could he possibly marry me?
His smile vanished, he pursed his lips, and then turned and left.
He could tell I didn't believe him, and he got angry.
