Chapter 40 In a moment of crisis, flames soared into the sky, screams rang out, and people ran in all directions...

In the garden raging in the gale, large snowflakes swept in, and everything before my eyes was white.

Unable to see the road ahead or the ground beneath my feet, I was nearly pulled down several times, only to be forcibly pulled back to my feet.

Flames soared into the sky, screams filled the air, and footsteps echoed as people fled in all directions. In a daze, I had the illusion of being back in Black Castle on the island.

"What happened?" I suddenly snapped out of it and panicked.

His expression was obscured by the wind and snow, but one could still sense his mocking reply: "What else could it be? There's a traitor in the castle, and the secret defensive barrier has been breached, allowing them to break in."

I was so startled that I gasped for breath and instinctively gripped his hand even tighter. He groaned, and I remembered that he was me and couldn't withstand such force, so I quickly let go.

An internal traitor set fire, and flames broke out on all sides. After lying in wait for three months, Rosie finally took action. Under the pretext of helping the king punish his unfilial son and framing the zombie incident, he joined forces with other lords to attack the castle.

Countless people fled towards the castle gates, but the gates were locked tight. The sounds of banging, shouting, screaming, and howling all mingled together, creating a horrifying scene.

Soon, enemy soldiers swarmed in, killing anyone they saw, and screams and cries once again filled the sky.

"Why did they choose this wedding day?" I asked, my heart pounding, standing with Bernard in a secluded spot in the garden closest to the castle gate.

“All the nobles and generals will come to the wedding; they want to take them all.”

So what do you decide to do?

"Let them kill."

"What?!"

I was so terrified that tears streamed down my face, and I couldn't utter another word.

Bernard smiled and gently wiped away my tears. "These nobles and generals deserve to die. They are the ones who profit from the black market, they are the ones who exploit the people, they are the ones who secretly cooperate with bandits to kill and burn, and they are the ones who usurp my lordship and secretly control the territory. This place was already a harsh and cold land, and their actions have made it even more harsh and cold."

"Impossible, these generals and officers clearly listen to you." I am the lord, I know that.

“Silly girl, they won’t openly oppose you. Only a fool would do that. They are best at being outwardly compliant but inwardly defiant,” Bernard said slowly. “Have you secretly left the castle to investigate the people? Have you sent people to secretly search their private property? Have you investigated the masterminds behind the multiple robberies, murders, and arsons? The official documents you see every day are all carefully embellished.”

It turns out I'm still a long way from being a true "king".

At this point, Bernard pulled me through this garden to another garden, which was surrounded and defended by the castle's armored guards. Not many enemy soldiers rushed in; there were only a large number of maids, servants, and laborers who had managed to sneak in and hide.

I looked around the garden in utter astonishment, but Bernard led me to the top of the steps and raised his voice, clear and penetrating, saying, "Gentlemen, the lord has just given an order: now that foreign enemies have invaded, if you fight them with all your might, the lord will reward you handsomely. For each enemy head you cut off, you will receive a silver coin; for ten enemy heads, you will receive ten plant seeds; for one hundred enemy heads, you will receive a small plot of land and a noble title, freeing you from slavery. You can cooperate to kill the enemy, and the spoils will be shared equally."

It must be said that the last reward was the most tempting. Escaping slavery and rising to the status of aristocracy was the dream of countless people from the lower classes.

An uncontrollable ecstasy appeared on the faces of the maids, servants, and laborers.

Bernard added at the opportune moment, "Now is both a time of crisis and a time to change our destiny," and then shouted the final line, "Charge, everyone!"

At the same time, the castle guards in the garden shouted and threw their extra weapons, such as knives, swords, and clubs, to the maids, servants, and laborers, who all screamed, cheered, and shouted as they caught them.

I was stunned and asked him in surprise, "Did you make careful plans beforehand?"

"Not really, I just used secret letters to contact some close subordinates and let them prepare in advance," he said. "I can't be completely sure that this will happen."

He looked at me with a mocking smile, "That's the difference between a true lord and a false lord."

I ignored him.

As the castle gates slowly opened, and a large number of enemy soldiers were about to storm in, hordes of men and women wielding knives, clubs, and swords surged out like a tide, shouting "Victory is certain!" The tide of battle began to turn...

I was escorted away from the garden by a group of castle guards and generals who rushed to protect me, and we climbed the castle's highest battle tower. Bernard was left behind; he was now me, walking slowly, and no guards were supporting him.

About ten minutes later, I was standing on the tower when I suddenly saw a group of cavalry galloping towards me in the distance. I picked up my binoculars and saw the leaders, Byrne and Tendy.

I was thrilled; the timing was perfect.

The arrival of reinforcements greatly boosted the morale of the castle side, and the enemy forces suffered repeated defeats.

Just when I thought we were sure to win, another strange group appeared in the distance, accompanied by strange vibrations.

When I picked up the binoculars again, I could hardly believe my eyes; my heart nearly jumped out of my chest.

Through the dense snow and wind, I witnessed the most terrifying scene of my life—

Countless ferocious-looking orcs roared and charged forward, brandishing their weapons, while some terrifying half-naked giants strode forward, wielding iron hammers, each step accompanied by a thunderous boom.

My legs went weak, and if it weren't for the quick thinking of the soldier next to me who caught me, I would have collapsed to the ground in fear.

This is exactly like a scene from the movie "Game of Thrones".

"The mercenaries are here!"

"My God, they're mercenaries!"

I grabbed the soldier who was helping me up and asked, "What is a mercenary?"

"Orc mercenaries," the soldier said, his face pale with fright. "Are you out of your mind?"

With a sharp crack, the soldier suddenly received a heavy slap across the face.

"How dare you speak to a lord like that!" Bernard, who had been standing on the other side, suddenly appeared and slapped him again. "Get lost!"

The soldier fled in a panic.
