Chapter 47 I will protect you forever. He gently brushed the hair off my nose...
War broke out again, and the entire castle was once again engulfed in smoke and fire.
The sound of cannons booming outside the window continued, and the faint smell of thick smoke drifted into my nostrils.
I had a slight fever and was forced by Bernard to stay in the bedroom to rest.
But I couldn't stay still. Not long after he left, I went to the Imperial Study and began studying my books and notes. An hour later, still restless, I put down my pen, opened the door to the Imperial Study, and asked Lady Zhen, "How is the situation now?!"
Mrs. Jane replied respectfully, "No news has come back yet."
I immediately ran up the snowy corridor and headed towards the tower.
I reached the top of the tower in less than fifteen minutes; the energy of this body was incredibly powerful.
Bernard was directing operations amidst the raging blizzard. Watching his slender figure standing firm in the snow, I didn't know whether to feel sorry for him or for myself.
“I’ll do it, woman, you go into the tower,” I said loudly, like a grown man.
Bernard glared at me and looked into the distance through his binoculars.
I walked up to him and lowered my voice: "If you don't want my fever to get worse, you'd better go inside now."
Bernard put down his binoculars, but pulled me into the tower with him.
The battle was getting more and more intense. Bernard and I didn't say a word, but kept a close eye on the situation.
The cannon fire grew more frequent, and the smoke thickened.
"My lord, this is bad! Our legion's fighting strength is getting weaker and weaker."
"My lord, some of Rosie's guards have begun their attack on the castle."
Arrows began to rain down on the castle walls, accompanied by the screams of guards and the sound of them falling.
"Hold the city gates!" someone shouted.
Another scream rang out.
More arrows pierced through, densely packed like a torrential rain, making it hard to breathe.
Some enemy soldiers had climbed onto the wall and started fighting with the guards. Several enemy soldiers even started setting fires, with thick smoke billowing out and shouts of alarm rising from all sides.
For the first time, I felt an overwhelming urge to cry. Was I really going to die here today?
Suddenly, Bernard pulled me behind him, shielding me tightly with his small body. "Don't worry, you'll be alright," he whispered. "I will always protect you."
He then loudly summoned several strong guards and ordered them to take me to the most secret hiding place. I refused to go, but Bernard forced me towards them.
I was forcibly taken away by them. After descending a few stone steps, more and more enemy soldiers rushed up the castle wall. Countless arrows shot at me through the tower windows. The guards blocked my way like an impregnable wall. Screams rose and fell. Just as I closed my eyes, thinking that I was doomed to die, a deafening roar suddenly came from all sides.
Not far away, billowing snow and the rapid sound of horses' hooves thundered, as if a thousand troops were rushing towards them.
I stared in shock, and vaguely saw large numbers of guards galloping towards me on horseback, waving flags and shouting, their voices deafening, so loud that even the snowflakes in the sky seemed to change direction.
“My lord, that’s your godfather’s army!” a guard said to me excitedly.
"The Duke of Abdul's army is here!" the guards cheered.
Amidst the raging wind and snow, I saw a large, blood-red floral banner fluttering in the gale. It seems my guess was right: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Bernard's adoptive father wouldn't easily give up Bernard, a useful pawn—a valuable ally in his power struggle.
Duke Abdul's reinforcements were divided into two parts. One part aided the castle, routing the invading enemy troops, while the other part supported the outer battlefield, causing Rohi's army to suffer repeated defeats and collapse, with the troops beginning to flee outwards.
Seeing that the war was about to end, I ran back into the tower. Bernot was killing the last few enemy soldiers who were climbing the tower. Just as I was about to call out to him, a dozen black arrows came flying from nowhere, aimed directly at Bernot. I was terrified and rushed towards Bernot without thinking. Just as I was about to hug him, he turned around and hugged me tightly, using his back to shield me from the arrows...
The excruciating pain in my chest and lower abdomen was like being cut by a knife, leaving me speechless—the pain of being pierced by a dozen arrows at the same time.
The arrow was too long; it pierced through both my body and Bernard's.
Warm, fresh blood stained our hands—the hands I was holding tightly around his waist.
"Just bear with it," he said to me, forcing himself to be in pain, "it'll be over soon."
I said okay, but as soon as I finished speaking, I felt dizzy, saw stars, and experienced a sharp pain in my chest. Suddenly, I knew nothing more and completely lost consciousness...
