Chapter 52 I'll Take Care of You: "When you're young, you rely on men to support you; when you're old, you can't even ask for anything..."

The next morning, I rushed to the coffee shop, having skipped work the day before.

After washing all the dishes, I cleaned the entire kitchen.

When I have a spare moment, the books I read yesterday pop into my head... Ugh, I can't think about them, my mind is a complete mess.

I'm a little confused.

If Dalene traveled before us, how did she know about the natural disaster?! And how could she have foreseen the turmoil at Bernard's wedding?!

I closed my eyes and let out a long sigh.

I can't think too much about it; I'm really worried I'll go insane. There are just too many unbelievable things happening.

In the afternoon, the coffee shop gradually became more crowded. I spent almost the entire time washing dishes and coffee cups at the sink.

As I was washing, the music and noise from the open kitchen door suddenly drifted away, and in a moment of dizziness and disorientation, the scene before me abruptly changed—

I stood in a spacious, warm, and retro-styled room.

It was midnight, and all around was pitch black except for the firelight from the fireplace illuminating a corner.

Mixed breathing and whispers from men and women came from the four-poster bed, which was surrounded by thick bed curtains.

"Do you love me? Do you love me or her?" the woman asked breathlessly and seductively.

I couldn't help but laugh when I heard that. It seems that women have always loved to ask this question, and men's reactions are remarkably consistent.

"I love you."

The man seemed to increase the intensity of his actions at the same time, and kissed the woman's lips fiercely, rendering her unable to ask any more questions.

When it was all over, the bed curtains were pulled back, and the man, panting, got off the bed and put on his outer robe.

"Are you still leaving?" A woman's soft voice came from the bed.

"Good girl," the man turned around and said softly, "Things will be different from now on."

"How long after that?"

"It will be soon."

"I love you, I truly love you." The woman ran naked off the bed and grabbed the man who was about to open the door, hugging his waist.

"I love you too." The man's voice was so gentle it could melt any woman's heart.

But in the dim light of midnight, I could clearly see the impatience on the man's face.

Someone once said that when you hug someone, you never know what expression the other person is having.

I also saw the woman close her eyes contentedly.

In that instant, I was almost immediately certain that she was Dalene—

This is just a gut feeling.

Sure enough, the man said gently, "Daleene, sweet dreams."

She smiled, a smile so sweet and happy.

After the man's figure disappeared into the hallway outside the door, and after Daisy went back to bed, I was surprised to find a third person's figure in the darkness.

She hid in the darkest corner of the corridor, large tears falling from her eyes.

I'm almost certain she is the Countess.

After witnessing her husband's and confidant's betrayal, she dragged herself away in the darkness.

The count had already returned to the room and was waiting for her, gently asking her where she had been.

She hugged him without saying a word.

The count, seeing her expression, understood everything.

I heard her plead with him to give up his talented lover, and I also heard him tenderly tell her that every man has a lover, but a man will never give up his wife for that reason.

“She will always be your handmaid,” he promised him.

She cried even more.

She thought her selfless devotion would win a man's wholehearted devotion, but she was completely wrong.

Hearing the Countess's cries, I sighed and left.

In the pitch-black corridor, a childish yet serious voice suddenly rang out, "Hey, who are you? What are you doing here?"

I turned around in alarm—someone could actually see me!

A little boy wearing a beautiful white bathrobe was standing barefoot about five steps away from me.

He seemed to have been following me for a while, but I didn't even notice.

"Tell me quickly, who are you?" the little boy asked again sharply.

"I……"

"Look at you, so dull-witted, you're probably an idiot." The little boy was quite sarcastic.

"I'm not stupid," I actually explained to him.

"What else could he be but an idiot, not even knowing who he is?"

“I…” I suddenly paused, “Why should I tell you?”

"Fine, don't tell me then." The little boy rolled his eyes at me. "I'll find out sooner or later anyway."

"oh?"

"You don't believe me?" The little boy smiled slyly. "I've known about what you just saw for a long time."

"Is he really a little boy?" I asked in surprise. "How old are you?"

"What's it to you how old I am? I've never seen you before, are you new here?"

"Ten years old?" I guessed from his height and voice, but I couldn't see his face clearly.

“Ten-year-old boys here already have girlfriends, and I’m still single.”

I was both amused and exasperated. "So how old are you?"

He glanced at me sideways. "Why should I tell you? Also, don't tell that bitch what you just saw. I have my own ways of dealing with her."

"What's the meaning?"

“Silly goose, what I mean is, don’t let that bitch know that my mother already knows about her and my father.”

In other words, the count and countess were his parents, yet he remained unusually calm about the turn of events.

He is definitely not an ordinary little boy.

I tried to leave quickly, but he stepped in front of me and blocked my way, asking, "Who are you?"

"I am a fairy from heaven, no, a goddess." I should probably call him a goddess here, I coaxed him, "We need to go back to heaven."

"I don't believe it. What kind of goddess is as stupid as you?"

"I really am a goddess."

He suddenly burst into laughter, "Since you've made me so happy, goddess, stay and be my girlfriend, I'll take care of you."

I laughed too, "If I really rely on a man to support me, I won't even be able to find a place to beg when I get old."

I'm telling the truth; even beggars need to claim their territory. Older beggars can't compete with younger ones.

I walked past the little boy and headed straight to the end of the corridor.

The little boy tried to grab me, but only grasped at empty air.

"Hey, I mean it when I say I'll take care of you, I can afford it."

He called out behind me, and I turned around.

The first rays of morning light shone into the depths of the corridor, illuminating the boy's strikingly handsome face, and revealing his clear amber eyes that sparkled like stars.

He smiled at me, a smile that was sweet and captivating.

My heart trembled inexplicably; that smile seemed strangely familiar.

The next second, I was back at the sink.

"Hey Ann, the sink is leaking water."

A kitchen worker waved her hand in front of my eyes.

"Oh, okay." I quickly turned off the tap.

"If you keep doing this, your boss might fire you," the female worker kindly reminded her.

Yes, yes.

***

Late at night, I sat in my rented room analyzing the entire storyline with the castle's little maid.

Suddenly, the conversation turned to the story of how my cousin accidentally received a beautiful stone as a gift from an African chief.

After thinking for a moment, the maid said, "Perhaps we need to meet with your cousin."

"Why?"

“Perhaps something else happened to her,” the maid said. “My intuition tells me that she might be hiding something from you, and the story isn’t that simple.”

“Okay, I’ll arrange to meet her,” I said.

"The sooner the better. I have a feeling we can learn something from her."
