Chapter 54 This handsome man is mine: "I never stole your destiny..."
My cousin laughed too, "There's nothing I can do, she just fell for it. She was the first fireplace owner I ever met, and I have a deep impression of her."
"Then she disappeared," my cousin added. "The room got a new female owner, her daughter."
"Where has she gone?" the castle maid asked curiously.
"I don't know. I only get to visit other worlds occasionally, and what I see are just fragments."
I asked again, "You said the second fireplace owner was her daughter? Why not the scumbag's new wife?"
“How would I know?” My cousin shrugged. “I can only tell you everything I saw. Her daughter is very beautiful and looks exactly like her son. When they stand together, you can’t tell who is the brother and who is the sister.”
"Huh?" The castle maid stared in astonishment, her mouth agape.
My cousin started drinking Americano again. "They wear identical clothes, have identical hair, and when they laugh, even their parents can't tell them apart. My sister often dances, draws, and writes poetry in her room. She's sensitive and delicate, just like her mother. My brother occasionally visits her, and they speak in very low voices, as if to avoid being overheard, but I still overheard a few times. Apparently, my brother is afraid there are spies around my sister, so he wants her to be careful in everything she does. He also wants her to carry a dagger or something similar with her, and not to be afraid if she kills someone, because he'll cover for her. He also wants her to always remember not to have close contact with any men, except for those her brother approves of, and to always remember the lesson of her mother."
I don't know what to say for a moment. My brother's actions seem a bit too much.
"One day, I heard my younger sister crying and wailing. It turned out that my brother had died, supposedly poisoned by our wicked stepmother. My sister couldn't eat or sleep, and cried day and night. When my scumbag father and stepmother came to see her, she glared at her stepmother with resentment. My father scolded her, telling her not to believe the rumors, that her brother had died of a sudden illness. Just then, my usually gentle sister suddenly rushed at her stepmother like a madwoman, stabbing her with a dagger she carried. Her aim was incredibly precise; she slit her stepmother's throat in one fell swoop."
"It all happened so suddenly, my scumbag father didn't even have time to stop it. My sister's stepmother died on the spot, lying in a pool of blood. My scumbag father turned pale and said that this was the Prime Minister's only daughter, and now that she was dead, I had to pay with my life. When I heard this, I was really worried for my sister."
"Later, after some time, a few maids came in to clean the room. I heard them whispering. The younger sister who stabbed her stepmother to death was sent to the land of the dead and would never come back. She would be a lifelong gravedigger. This room was considered an ominous place, and no one would live here anymore. They only came to clean it occasionally. Then, suddenly, I returned to the modern world," my cousin finished speaking.
Hearing this, for some reason, I began to believe that Princess Manboya, the black raven in the Black Castle, was this younger sister, and the little boy in the nightgown I met in the damp, dark corridor was this older brother.
We chatted for a while longer before leaving. The castle maid and I went back to the hotel to rest, while my cousin went back to her rented apartment to work on her thesis.
This meeting seemed to have yielded some results, yet it also seemed to have yielded nothing.
I asked the castle maid, "What inspiration did you get?"
She said, "No."
I don't have any either.
The next day at noon, she and I boarded the plane for our return trip.
In the roaring cabin, she was drawing casually. I curiously leaned over to take a look. "What are you drawing? You've been drawing for half an hour already?"
"A handsome man," she replied without looking up, "but my drawing skills are limited; I can't draw him like that."
I stared in disbelief at the messy lines on her drawing paper.
The castle maid suddenly looked up at me and said, "I've actually seen him before."
"who?"
"That handsome man from another world."
I stared at her in shock. "Didn't you say... you've been working as a night soil collector?"
“Yes, but that doesn’t stop me from seeing handsome men.” The castle maid threw down her paintbrush. “Actually, I also secretly sneaked into the tomb and discovered the black tower covered by a glass dome. I also saw the handsome young man sleeping at the top of the tower.”
My breathing suddenly quickened, and the little maid in the castle picked up her paintbrush again and scribbled on the paper. "My blood could also lower the temperature of the glass dome, and I successfully overturned it, but I couldn't place the Black Tower on the open ground outside the Cave of Bones like you did. The Black Tower couldn't quickly grow into a real Black Tower. But I took out the beautiful boy—I initially thought he was a small wax figure. He really did look like a wax figure; he felt strangely smooth to the touch. I even stole a kiss from him because he was so beautiful."
I stared intently at her. "Why are you telling me all this now?"
"A dozen minutes before boarding, I couldn't help but call your cousin to ask about the castle, and also," she paused before continuing, "about a boy from the Black Tower that I've always been concerned about. I think she might have heard about him when she was making the fireplace, and then your cousin told me your story with this handsome man from another world..."
I once mentioned something about me and this handsome guy to my cousin. "And then?" I asked.
“There is no 'then',” the castle maid said, enunciating each word clearly. “I just want to tell you that this Black Tower boy is not yours, he is mine.”
"Otherwise, why do you think I would spend time and energy researching the other world with you? It's just to find a way back to the other world."
