Chapter 70 Protecting You: The overwhelming, piercing cries of vengeful spirits echoed...
"I'm going back to my room," I replied casually.
His eyes betrayed disappointment, as if he had been expecting some kind of reaction from me but had been disappointed.
“Okay, I’ll take you back to your room.” He was still gentle.
Back in my room, I collapsed into bed and slept until midnight.
When I woke up, there was a small note under my pillow with only one line: "The King and Queen have long been under house arrest, and Princess Yani has crossed the northern border."
I never expected that I would run into this girl who threatened me at the market in the afternoon, and then receive information about her in the middle of the night.
But how did she manage to slip the note under my pillow? I had underestimated her before.
Before dawn, I quietly left my room.
Walking alone in the deep, quiet corridor, the pale sunlight shines on the mottled gray walls, shimmering with light.
After navigating several bends, I climbed the stone steps and went straight to the largest room on the third floor.
Several maids were pushing a cleaning cart in front of the door and were surprised to see me.
I glanced at the toiletries in the cart. "Are you going to go in and clean?"
The head maid replied, "Yes."
"May I come in?"
The head maid opened the door with a key and stood aside.
I didn't expect to get in so easily. Well, I was taken in by Manberia before, which they considered proof that I was allowed to enter.
I stood in the center of the room, and the maids began to clean; some changed the curtains, some changed the sheets, and others swept the floor.
Pretending to be casual, I glanced at the fireplace beside the bed and asked, "Can you tell me the story of this room?"
“Yes,” the head maid, who had been standing beside me, said, “this was first Prince Mamboa’s mother’s room, and later Prince Mamboa’s sister’s.”
I was surprised by her straightforward answer, "And then?"
The head maid smiled slightly and replied, "After Princess Ya'er harmed her stepmother, she was sent to the land of death to be a gravedigger, and this room has been considered an ominous place. If Prince Manboa had not given us permission in advance, we would never have dared to let you in."
I walked to the gray fireplace and suddenly realized that my conversation with the maid seemed quite familiar. I remembered what my cousin had said: "One day, I heard my sister crying and wailing. It turned out that her brother had died, supposedly poisoned by her wicked stepmother... Her scumbag father and stepmother came to see her, and my sister suddenly rushed at her stepmother like a madwoman... and she was incredibly accurate, slitting her stepmother's throat with a single stroke..."
Such precise technique, it turns out it was the older brother who did it.
I crouched down halfway to examine the fireplace closely.
The head maid behind me said, "We all thought Princess Ya'er would never come back and would be a tomb keeper for life. Who knew she would not only return, but also regain her true identity—she was our Prince Mamboa."
I reached for the fireplace again, only to be met with a deafening roar of vengeful spirits, and I recoiled as if electrocuted.
Strange, shouldn't this fireplace belong to my cousin? Why are there so many vengeful voices?
The terrifying thought of being besieged by vengeful spirits in the garden before surged into my mind again, and my heart pounded violently.
Suddenly I rushed toward a maid who was wiping windows, snatched the long cleaning stick from her hand, and started hitting the fireplace with all my might.
The maids were all stunned.
Just a few dozen seconds later, a loud bang was heard, and half of the seemingly solid fireplace collapsed, with fragments falling out. An even more terrifying scene unfolded: a large pile of ears, eyes, hair, and limbs fell out of the cracked fireplace.
The maids screamed in fright and backed away.
I was so shocked that I froze completely.
My initial guess was that my cousin was murdered and sealed in the fireplace along with countless vengeful spirits. This fireplace was a container filled with these vengeful spirits, like the chest full of dolls in the Black Castle. When needed, the container would be opened, using the power of the vengeful spirits to either nourish the living or attack others.
I forced myself not to faint, but when wisps of white smoke-like figures rushed out, I was terrified and fell to the ground. These white figures looked exactly like the vengeful spirits in the Black Castle from years past.
White shadows surrounded us, emitting strange, piercing screams. The maids screamed in terror, while I was speechless with fright. In that critical moment, a melodious harp tune suddenly rang out, forming a strange power that silenced the white shadows and stopped the screams.
Before I could even blink, these vengeful white shadows were sucked in by a golden harp that suddenly flew up to the ceiling. The suction was so strong that my long hair was violently blown up.
As the white figures were all sucked in, my long hair fell back onto my shoulders.
Just as I was about to breathe a sigh of relief, a heavy slap came down and hit my left cheek.
I cried out in pain, a piercing pain spreading to my ears.
“Don’t think that just because you’re my mistress you can do whatever you want,” Manberia’s cold voice rang out.
I covered my left cheek and cried out angrily, "I am not your mistress."
Manberia's voice was even colder, "Whoever controls you, you are their mistress."
My left cheek was burning with pain, so painful that I couldn't speak.
Next, I was locked in my room and not allowed to step out without Manberia's permission.
My situation is worse than it was in the Bernot region.
In that desolate land, I could still turn the tide by switching bodies, fighting, and dealing with zombies, but here, I have no resources and no power to fight back.
I am no match for Mamboa in intelligence or physical strength, and I am even inferior to his mistress.
I cried all night and could barely fall asleep at dawn.
When I woke up, the setting sun filled the entire room, casting a soft golden light on the floor, and the long curtains were all tinged with a charming orange.
There was a gentle knock on the door. I didn't answer. A moment later, the door was pushed open, and two maids entered carrying food trays.
They frowned slightly as they looked at the food that had barely been touched the night before, sitting by the bedside.
One of the maids said, "Prince Mamboa is currently outside your room, asking if you would like to see him."
I shook my head.
The two maids were not surprised. They put down the new food tray, took away the old one, and left.
I opened the floor-to-ceiling glass doors to the spacious terrace and sat alone on the floor, gazing at the fiery clouds and the half-sunken orange-red sunset.
I stood up, walked onto the spacious terrace, and felt the cool breeze that was about to fall into the night.
***
At six o'clock in the morning, as dawn broke, a beautiful naked woman awoke from her soft bed, only to find the bed empty beside her.
"Someone come here." The beautiful woman put on the thin gauze coat on the bedside table.
A maid rushed in from the outer room. "Madam Su Luo, you're awake."
"Where is Prince Mamboa?"
He will be waiting for you at the restaurant.
Su Luo pouted, "You've left me all alone again."
At 7:30, the elegantly dressed Su Luo gracefully entered the luxurious dining room, the floor tiles gleaming like mirrors. Su Luo smiled contentedly. She had no regrets whatsoever about betraying her aunt and being with the de facto owner of this palace years ago.
Looking at the empty seat in Mamboa, Su Luo frowned slightly again, "Where is the prince?"
“The prince has gone to invite Lady Lanna to breakfast; she hasn’t eaten for two days,” the maid replied.
Su Luo sat down with a cold laugh. "It would be better if you starved to death."
After sitting for a while, Su Luo's expression turned even more unpleasant. "Bring my breakfast over first. We can't wait for the prince."
Su Luo thought to herself, "I have to teach Manberia a lesson, otherwise he'll always think I'm too easy to talk to."
Two maids carrying trays of food came forward and placed milk, bread, and a fruit basket on the table. One of the maids accidentally dropped the fruit basket on the floor, scattering apples everywhere.
Just as Su Luo was about to rebuke him, the maid pulled a gleaming fruit knife from the bottom of the fruit basket and stabbed Su Luo in the chest. Screams and gasps erupted, and the maids rushed over and held the assassin down.
But the knife tip had already pierced Su Luo's chest, staining her gauze dress with blood; the knife had struck a vital spot.
"Don't blame me, blame yourself for betraying your aunt." The maid, who was being held down, smiled eerily.
When the guards rushed in upon hearing the commotion, the maid quickly pulled out a poison pill, swallowed it, and died vomiting blood...
When I received the message, I was being persuaded to eat breakfast by Manberia, who barged into my bedroom.
"I'm not being stubborn, I really have no appetite," I said.
“But you’ll starve if you don’t eat,” he said gently.
“Just tell me what you want me to do,” I said. “I can think about it.”
He just smiled, a charming smile.
Just as I was thinking of a way to get rid of him, a guard rushed to the bedroom and knelt down, saying, "Your Highness, Lady Su Luo has just been assassinated."
His expression changed slightly. Then my situation changed.
He took me to, or rather carried me directly to, his room, and assigned a bunch of guards to stand at the door, as well as a dozen strong maids to watch over me inside.
I was being watched like a vicious criminal.
"What do you mean by this?" I was on the verge of tears.
He said casually, "It's just about keeping an eye on my own woman."
"I am not your woman."
Seeing my anger, he gently comforted me, "We're about to get into a war, so I have to keep an eye on you."
"What do you mean?" I asked in surprise. Everything was peaceful and quiet. Where did this war come from?
He suddenly hugged me tightly, burying his head in my shoulder. "Don't worry, although I am not the prince you awakened in the tower, I am the prince who led you away from this dangerous place and will protect you."
I tried to break free from him, but he held me even tighter.
When he let go of me, he quickly stole a kiss on my lips, then laughed and left.
