"Resting?" Yao Zijun stopped in her tracks, pulling her finger back from the door knocker; she was about to knock on it.
The little girl looked at Yao Zijun, who was some distance away, and nodded. "Grandma takes a few days off every month. If you're not in a hurry, you can come back tomorrow. Grandma will open the shop tomorrow."
Yao Zijun smiled and said, "Then we'll come again tomorrow. Thank you for today."
Fortunately, they will come again tomorrow, and she can come back to ask them after the filming is over.
“Then…don’t come too early tomorrow,” the girl paused, kindly reminding you, but then felt she hadn’t been specific enough, so she added, “At this time, Grandma is eating, so you can only go in to make a wish. And don’t come too late either, because Grandma will close at six o’clock in the afternoon. This has been the rule for many years.”
"Okay, we understand."
The little girl nodded to Lu Wanzheng and Yao Zijun, smiled slightly, and carried the basin to the corner of the house. There was a small ditch there, which the residents used for drainage. The little girl poured out the water little by little.
Lu Wanzheng looked away, and Yao Zijun walked to her side, her tone somewhat disappointed, "It seems we can only wait until tomorrow. But we'll probably be filming all day tomorrow. I need to sneak in and find Grandma while you're not filming at the Yue Lao Temple."
The Temple of the Matchmaker is a landmark building, so it will definitely be one of the filming locations tomorrow. You can ask the old lady what she says, instead of going through all the trouble I did.
Lu Wanzheng thought the same thing. By the time filming ended, the old lady would have already closed her shop. She couldn't very well ask her to make another trip the day after tomorrow. She was planning to return to Kyoto as soon as filming ended tomorrow, and she had already booked her plane ticket.
"Since it's not open, let's go look around somewhere else," Lu Wanzheng suggested. Although it was the hottest time of day, the autumn breeze made it feel less hot.
After pouring the water, the little girl turned around and saw that the pretty older sister hadn't left. Hearing her say that she wanted to wander around, she said, "Sister, let me take you around. This place is so much fun." The little girl's eyes crinkled into crescents; she was very cute.
Lu Wanzheng, who was wondering where to go for fun, nodded happily upon hearing this. With a little guide, they wouldn't have to wander around aimlessly.
"Wait a few minutes, I'm going to put something down," the little girl said as soon as Lu Wanzheng agreed. She ran back home, found an empty spot to put the basin down, and called out to her family, presumably to tell them what was going on. After that, she ran out and stood in front of Lu Wanzheng. "Sisters, let's go."
The little girl led Lu Wanzheng and Yao Zijun around, excitedly chattering as she introduced the local specialties to them.
"This shop makes paper cuttings. The old man inside is very old, but he has excellent eyesight and skillful hands. The things he cuts out look just like the real thing."
That shop makes root carvings. The tree roots are dug out from under the trees that have just died on the mountain. They are still very fresh and have not rotted. Some of the root carvings still retain their original flavor, which is very fragrant.
And that shop, the one that makes "Grandma and Grandpa's Cakes," have you ever tried it, sister?
Yao Zijun shook her head; this was the first time she had ever heard this name.
"Then you sisters should try it, it's so delicious. It's just a lump of dough, wrapped with meat and scallions, packed tightly, flattened, and then deep-fried in oil. The aroma comes out immediately."
The people here are all very kind. The old lady who makes the "Grandma and Grandpa" cakes uses very high-quality ingredients; she only uses the best cuts of meat. She gets up very early every day to chop and mix the filling. People here like to have one in the morning.
