"Dad, are you really up in the mountains?"
A look of disbelief flashed across Wang Laosan's face when Wang Wenfei called out to him.
"Oh, it's Xiao Fei! What brings you here?"
Wang Laosan came to his senses in surprise and then glanced at the people next to Wang Wenfei.
The greedy gaze that swept over everyone only subsided when it saw Mingmei standing at the very edge.
"You've come to pay homage to the Mountain God, haven't you? Please come in quickly."
Suddenly, Wang Laosan and another middle-aged man, who were standing behind the door, spoke up, drawing attention from the others.
This person looked extremely sleazy, not just because of his pointed face and monkey-like cheeks, but because his entire demeanor was very unpleasant.
Seeing everyone looking at him, the other party was not intimidated. He chuckled with the temple door half-closed, and at the same time, he and Wang Laosan opened the temple door, making him even more lewd and offensive.
“Dad, you ran away without saying a word yesterday. Mom is very worried. Why don’t you come down the mountain with me to go back home?”
Wang Wenfei ignored the man's greeting and went straight into the temple. Instead, she stood at the door and spoke to Wang Laosan in a very forceful tone.
In her memory of her role, the person in the family who had the least faith in the mountain god was her father, Wang Laosan.
"Why would you go down the mountain? Your dad is a temple keeper on the mountain now, just like me, serving the mountain god. He can't easily go down the mountain!"
Before Wang Laosan could speak, another temple keeper interrupted him. Wang Wenfei turned to look at the other man, her expression unfriendly, and asked, "Temple keeper? Who are you? Why haven't I seen you in the village before?"
Crescent Moon Village isn't particularly large, but it's not small either. However, it was large enough for her to get to know every household well during the more than ten years she lived there.
She had absolutely no recollection of the man in front of her.
“I’m not from your village, so of course you wouldn’t know.”
"Impossible! How could the Mountain God allow people from outside Crescent Village to serve him?"
"That's because you're young and inexperienced. I, Huang Er, have been a temple keeper here for a long time. As for you, little fellow, you've never been to a temple before, have you?"
Faced with Wang Wenfei's questioning, Huang Er turned his words back to Wang Wenfei, implying that what right did a not-so-devout believer have to doubt him?
You haven't seen it? That's because you haven't been up the mountain, so naturally you haven't seen it.
"Are there any special customs or traditions associated with being a temple keeper or something like that?"
Seeing Wang Wenfei arguing with the NPC, Lu Xiaoyao leaned close to Mingmei and whispered her question.
Mingmei shook her head, indicating that she wasn't quite sure either, and simply said, "The selection of the temple keeper is always done by the mountain god himself."
"Huh?" Lu Xiaoyao's gaze couldn't help but linger on the other person for a moment before she silently turned back, her expression quite complicated. She said, "Is the mountain god so indiscriminate? These temple keepers are all... all rather rough-looking, huh?"
Saying it was rough was already quite euphemistic; Lu Xiaoyao wanted to say something like, "What kind of deformed fruits are these?"
Although Wang Laosan had regular features, he had a fierce look on his face and didn't seem like a good person.
As for Huang Er, even if we say we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, he has an "outstanding temperament"!
At this, Mingmei's lips twitched almost imperceptibly.
"Stop chatting at the door and come in. It's foggy this morning, and it might rain later."
At this moment, Wang Laosan also interrupted Wang Wenfei and Huang Er's conversation. He stepped past Huang Er and the others, making a guiding gesture with his hands to lead them inside.
Huang Er obediently opened all the temple doors, and everyone immediately saw a huge bronze incense burner with fine sandalwood burning on it, which calmed their minds as soon as they smelled it.
Looking further inside, you'll find the main hall of the mountain god temple.
The structure of the mountain god temple is not complicated; it's the kind of structure that you can see at a glance.
Suddenly, a raindrop the size of a soybean hit everyone's head without warning, and the group, without having time to doubt anything, could only walk into the temple.
Because it was raining, the group walked along the long corridor beside the wall to reach the main hall of the mountain god temple. It was only after walking along the corridor that they realized the mountain god temple was actually quite large, not as small as they had imagined.
"Where does this road go?"
Lu Xiaoyao pointed curiously to a place completely opposite to the direction of the main hall. Wang Laosan said, "It's the backyard. There's a kitchen and bedrooms. We temple keepers rest there at night. Besides that, if tourists come, they can also stay overnight."
Huang Er followed up on Wang Laosan's words, saying, "Judging from today's rain, you might have to stay overnight."
After saying that, Huang Er raised his hand to cover himself wiping his drool with his sleeve and chuckled.
Mingmei, who was at the very back, frowned as she watched, mentally trying to shift her attention to Mu Chen, who was also walking at the very back.
"What's wrong?"
Seeing that Mingmei was looking at him but her mood wasn't very high, he asked.
"It's nothing." Mingmei shook her head repeatedly. She had finally managed to forget something, and she didn't want to remember it now.
"Do you need any assistance this round?"
Mu Chen suddenly whispered something to her, his tone extremely ambiguous, and then he winked at her.
However, this did not prevent Mingmei from immediately realizing that Mu Chen had discovered the problem with her identity.
"you……"
Seeing Mingmei suddenly bristle, Mu Chen couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Although she didn't say anything, after so long, how could Mu Chen not have noticed? So he laughed even more heartily.
"Stop laughing! You'll attract attention!" Mingmei glared at Mu Chen and was about to pinch his waist when Mu Chen's large hand covered her completely.
