For a moment, the room was unusually quiet, so quiet that it was as if you could hear each other breathing.
Li Mingliang stood there quietly, staring at her as if trying to imprint her into his mind. This silent atmosphere made Qin Yunie feel a little uncomfortable, and she couldn't help but ask first, "Why did you deliver it today? You didn't mention it last night."
Whenever Li Mingliang has free time, he checks in and greets Qin Yunie in the morning, noon, and evening. After finishing his work, he also chats with Qin Yunie for a few minutes and shares some interesting things that happened at work.
For Li Mingliang, being alone in a room with a girl like this was a rare experience. He couldn't help but feel a little nervous and subconsciously wanted to scratch his head, but then he remembered that he was wearing a police uniform and slowly lowered his hand. He then smiled and said, "Is this a surprise for you? It wasn't originally me who brought it; I applied for it myself."
Qin Yunie paused slightly upon hearing this, then pursed her lips and sighed softly, saying, "I'm sorry, you know me..."
Before she could finish speaking, Li Mingliang hurriedly interrupted her, "I know you don't want to find a partner right now. I'm just here to make an impression and reserve a spot for myself. Besides, I've been busy lately and might not have much time to look for you. Just don't forget about me."
Qin Yunie was both amused and exasperated. "How could I possibly forget?"
He glanced at the time. He had a mission that afternoon, and he had made time specifically for this trip. Seeing that it was getting late, he said, "That's fine then. It's getting late, I have to go."
Li Mingliang suddenly asked expectantly, "By the way, could you give me some of that pastry you had the other day?"
Qin Yunie was taken aback when he suddenly jumped from leaving to food. After a brief silence, he nodded and said, "There are still some in the refrigerator."
Earlier, Li Mingliang messaged her to ask what she was doing. She had just steamed some pastries and was tasting them when she found out that he remembered her.
She then grabbed a takeout box, opened the refrigerator, took out some pastries from among the many, filled a box to the brim, and handed it to Li Mingliang.
Li Mingliang smiled, took the pastries, and tilted them slightly upwards, saying, "I'm so lucky to finally have the pleasure of eating your homemade pastries!"
Qin Yunie chuckled at his words, "Don't you have something to do? Go ahead and get busy, don't let it interfere with important matters. If you want some, just let me know next time and I'll send you some."
Upon hearing this, Li Mingliang's face immediately lit up with a bright smile, as if afraid she might change her mind, and he quickly said, "You said it yourself! I'll remember! I'm leaving now, I'll send you a message!"
After saying that, she took the box of pastries and left, as if afraid that if she was a moment later she would regret not sending them to him.
Then, Qin Yune heard scattered sounds coming from outside.
"There's so much of this, please give us some!"
“That’s right, if we hadn’t made room for you, you wouldn’t even have any pastries! You have to share some with us.”
Immediately afterwards, several smacking sounds of flesh hitting flesh were heard, along with Li Mingliang's hushed, threatening voice, "Try stealing another one? Do you want a beating?! Go buy your own if you want some! Don't even think about mine, I only have this much!"
The sound gradually faded away, and Qin Yune could no longer hear anything.
The leaders waited in the car first, and only left together after Li Mingliang and the others got out.
After the cars left, the villagers who had been surrounding the house all crowded into Qin Yune's house.
One of the uncles who lived relatively close to Qin Yune asked, "Yune, what did the leaders want with you? Was that plaque those policemen brought for a first-class merit?"
Immediately, someone chimed in, "Yeah, Yu Nie, Mayor Wu said you did something that made the whole city proud. Is that true? When did it happen? How come we haven't heard anything about it?"
Just then, a gasp suddenly came from the crowd. A sharp-eyed middle-aged woman's eyes fell directly on the medal Qin Yune was wearing on his clothes. Her eyes widened, and she shouted in surprise, "Look, isn't that medal Yune is wearing on his chest the medal for First-Class Merit?!"
This shout rang out like thunder in the crowd, instantly attracting everyone's attention. Immediately, many people crowded forward, craning their necks to carefully examine the medal on Qin Yunie's chest.
One of them exclaimed excitedly, "I've seen it before, that's exactly what it looks like!"
As soon as the man finished speaking, another commotion arose in the crowd, with people whispering and discussing among themselves.
"That really is a first-class merit!"
"Our village has produced a great hero!"
"That's right! Yu Nie has really made something of herself this time. If her parents and grandmother knew this in the afterlife, they would definitely be happy for her!"
Seeing that Qin Yune's door was blocked, Aunt Wang immediately pushed her way to the front and blocked them outside. She shouted loudly, "You all keep talking at once, how is Yune supposed to answer? All of you, step back a bit, or you'll break down the door!"
Aunt Wang's words immediately silenced everyone, and they all obediently moved a little further away.
Qin Yunie hadn't expected that sending a plaque would cause such a big reaction; if she had known, she would have had them come quietly.
Qin Yunie said apologetically, "Dear uncles and aunts, I'm really sorry. It's not that I didn't want to tell you, but the mission is confidential and it's not convenient to tell others. However, this is indeed a medal for first-class merit."
Upon hearing this, Aunt Wang immediately frowned and said, "It's a good thing you're all Yu Nie's uncles and aunts. Yu Nie's mission is definitely a secret. If she tells you, wouldn't that be asking her to make a mistake?"
Aunt Wang's words immediately made the uncles who had just asked the question rub their hands awkwardly. "Yes, yes, we were just happy too. It's the first time I've ever seen a First-Class Merit Medal in person. Wasn't the plaque for the First-Class Merit Medal delivered? Why isn't it hung up?"
Qin Yunie explained with a smile, "I live alone, and I was afraid that hanging it up would be too conspicuous, so I asked them to put it inside."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a woman, known for her gossip in the village, couldn't help but say, "Precisely because he lives alone, it should be hung up..."
But the next second, his aunt next to him covered his mouth and smiled at Qin Yune, saying, "That's right, it's better to be cautious."
Most of the missions that earn first-class merit are very dangerous. What if some criminals expose Qin Yunie and cause her to suffer retaliation?
Although everyone in the village knows each other well, one should always be wary of others.
Since Qin Yunie chose not to hang up, she must have her reasons.
