Chapter 16 Buying Clothes

When they arrived at the fabric shop, Lu Amian saw that it was packed with people and, fearing that the chicks would be squeezed, she didn't go in.

He just stood at the entrance and asked passersby, "Why is it so lively?"

"Isn't there some good news?! The youngest daughter of the Lu family is getting married! I heard she's ordered a lot of silk clothes!"

Lu Amian also joined the crowd of passersby in the excitement, exclaiming, "Wow!"

Seeing her country bumpkin appearance, the man became even more smug. "You don't know, do you? The Zhang family spent a fortune to marry the Lu family's youngest daughter. They even booked the banquet in this whole town! It's said that they were childhood sweethearts and were betrothed since they were little..."

"Wow!"

Lu Amian listened as if she were telling a story, and the chicks chirped and chirped along enthusiastically.

She had never been to a restaurant before, but hearing others say that restaurants offered many delicacies, she couldn't help but yearn for it.

The shop was crowded. Meng Chijian turned his head and saw that A Mian hadn't followed. He was about to pull her in.

However, seeing that she was listening intently to people talking, he decided to do the shopping for her himself.

Inside the shop, a woman was picking and choosing among the many samples laid out by the shop assistants, her words full of criticism. Beside her was a girl with a flushed face, and the two were discussing something in hushed tones.

Meng Chijian didn't care about other people's affairs. He took the goods he had ordered earlier and looked them over one by one.

After the inspection was almost complete, I paid and left.

Originally, the two were unrelated.

Suddenly, a crisp female voice rang out, "Lu Amian! What are you doing here?!"

Lu Amian then realized that the person was Lu Weiwei, who was beaming with joy. "Long time no see!"

"Weiwei, so you're getting married?" A-Mian suddenly realized that Zhang Sheng and Miss Lu were them.

At the same time, Lu Weiwei was also sizing up Lu Amian.

After several months, Ah Mian seemed to have grown taller, and her face was fairer. Her chest, arms, and cheeks looked a bit fuller, but her clothes were still those old, torn, and short clothes, making her look very shabby.

"Yes. That's why... I came to buy some clothes and stuff. I told them I didn't want any, but my mother-in-law's family insisted..." She pretended to bite her lip in distress, "By the way, you'll have to come to the wedding banquet! It's at the big restaurant in town."

In her dream, she envied Lu Amian for marrying well. Now that the situation had reversed for her, she was overjoyed and said smugly, "You rarely come to town, so let me show you around."

"No, no, I'm almost done shopping." Lu Amian said sincerely, "Congratulations on marrying into a good family!"

Her reaction made Lu Weiwei feel quite bored.

Meng Chijian walked over and said, "That's about enough. It's time to go home today." He carried another bundle on his back.

Lu Amian nodded, "Then we'll be going now."

“Alright, I’ll send the invitation to your residence another day—” Lu Weiwei said loudly on purpose.

These country folk's homes are hardly worthy of being called a mansion.

The pedestrians burst into laughter.

Lu Weiwei also met Meng Chijian once. Seeing that he was as cold and gloomy as in her dream, she silently turned her back and sneered.

She didn't notice that the tall man in front of her suddenly turned his head and glanced at her.

On the way back, Meng Chijian asked, "Who was that person you were talking to just now?"

"It turns out to be my cousin."

"You two are very close?"

Amian shook her head. "She doesn't like me."

You know?

A-Mian gave him a look that said, "Are you stupid?" "We weren't very close before. A few months ago, she suddenly started coming to see me all the time, but actually she always went to see Zhang Yixing instead of me. But that's about it."

"so."

As for why she didn't like Lu Weiwei, A-Mian herself couldn't explain it.

It's like a village dog, naturally drawn to some people and distant from others. There's no real reason behind it.

Once home, Lu Amian put all the trivial matters and troubles brought about by human relationships to the back of her mind and enthusiastically took care of her chickens.

If Meng Jing hadn't stopped her, she might have even had the sudden idea to feed the most dying chick goat milk.

Fortunately, she had prepared vegetable leaves and piled up warm straw, and everything in the water trough and food trough was well arranged.

At first, because the chicks were still small, they were kept in bamboo baskets lined with straw for warmth and convenience, and a half-stacked straw shed was enough to keep them warm.

The weakest chick was named "Five Coins" by A-Mian. Country folk are superstitious and believe that if you give a creature a name, it won't be so easily taken away by the King of Hell.

Unlike its other brothers and sisters, Wuqian initially refused to drink any water or eat any vegetable leaves.

Amian took a reed stalk and forced it into its mouth. Every hour, she would first give it some water, and then mash up some vegetable leaves to feed it.

After all that fuss, it was evening before they finally put the chicks back in their nest.

As usual, it was time for a bath. Lu Amian sat in the wooden tub, looking down at herself.

She seems to have gained weight.

She raised one of her arms, and instead of a layer of skin covering thin bones, there was tender, white flesh—it even looked somewhat appetizing…

"What are you doing? Are you going to bite yourself again?" came an unhappy voice from behind.

Lu Amian shuddered and shrank back underwater, leaving only her eyes, which were watery from the steam, visible.

Meng Chijian lowered his eyes. "I bought you these clothes today. No one in our family knows how to do needlework, and besides, doing too much is bad for your eyes... like my mother, so my little sister didn't learn much either. You... try them on yourself later, and if they don't fit, you can take them to be altered."

A-Mian obediently replied, "Thank you, Brother Meng."

Meng Chijian was about to leave when he heard this form of address, so he simply went back to tending the fire.
