Chapter 30: The Dragon's Pride (Part 1)

Yuan Hua inquired about quite a few things at Dr. Huang's house.

To be honest, he was originally a recent graduate who worked six days a week at a small company, earning a monthly salary of 4,500 yuan.

This is clearly a far cry from what he said during a late-night chat in the dormitory group: "Once I graduate, I'll at least find a job with a monthly salary of over 10,000 yuan."

But there was nothing he could do. During the job-hunting season, he sent out thousands of resumes. Some of the seemingly ordinary positions attracted many graduates from prestigious universities who competed with him.

He originally wanted to take the postgraduate entrance exam or the civil service exam, but after spending several years of his university years playing around, he found that he couldn't concentrate on studying at all after just two months of reading.

In the end, he had no choice but to hastily find a job at a company.

After working for two months, Yuan Hua had an argument with her boss and decided to quit.

Feeling that society had given him a harsh lesson, Yuan Hua spent his days at home reading novels. He read a whole series of "Dragon King Returns," "The Son-in-Law's Rise to Power," "The Underclass College Student Turns Out to Be the Head of the X Family," and so on.

When I'm hungry, I just order a meal of mixed rice and vegetables.

He wasn't one to fuss over the taste of the ingredients; after all, it was already quite generous of him to be able to afford a meal for such a small amount of money. The problem was that he was always very thirsty after eating and had to drink several large glasses of water to feel better.

He wasn't too panicked when he arrived here. After all, he was surrounded by a bunch of uneducated natives, and Yuan Hua thought it would be easy to fool them. It was a "lower-dimensional attack".

Although the starting point is low now, it is not impossible for him to become a marquis or prime minister and establish a dynasty in the future.

After all, he's from another time.

He also subtly inquired about A-Mian's family situation. A-Mian was a newlywed, and the Meng family didn't treat her well. Her husband had no savings and had been carrying heavy loads at the docks for the past few days.

In short, Ah Mian is such a pitiful yet adorable "savior" that in the 21st century she could be considered a "high school girl," and he certainly has an obligation to save her from her dire straits.

However, his plan to be invited to dinner by staring at the fish soup fell through.

Because Ah Mian didn't understand his expression at all, she scratched her head and said, "I didn't save you, I'm not your savior. I just happened to be passing by the river and saw you."

Meng Chijian stood to the side, showing no intention of inviting him.

At this time, everyone was short of food, so who would offer this strong young man a meal for no reason?

Yuan Hua was not discouraged. He believed that his current forbearance would surely lead to a slap in the face in the future—these locals would soon be kneeling and begging him for mercy!

He put on a sincere face and said, "That's not how it is. Actually, your whole family is my benefactor. If you hadn't found me, and if this brother hadn't told the villagers to help rescue me, I would have been dead. I'm actually a refugee from another village. I can work... I'm not someone who just eats for free. Tomorrow I'm thinking of going to work with you, brother. I'll definitely repay you with the money I earn before I can feel at ease."

Hearing this, the blind mother of Mencius felt a pang of pity. "That's alright, let's just eat our fill tonight."

Yuan Hua immediately responded and eagerly brought half a bowl of sweet potato porridge to the table.

He frowned as soon as he tasted it.

It doesn't taste like anything.

Yuan Hua lowered his head and took another big gulp of porridge, his eyes widening this time. The subtle sweetness made his stomach, which had been growling for a long time, rumble, and even the side dishes tasted delicious. He quickly finished the porridge before going to get some fish soup. Although he only managed to pick up a piece of fish tail, he carefully selected the fish meat on top. The delicious taste made him bury his head in his food, and for a moment he even forgot the frustration of not having a phone to play with while eating after transmigrating.

Every dish and meal here has an indescribable rustic charm.

Before I knew it, I finished eating and felt none of my usual irritability. Instead, I felt a sense of fulfillment and happiness.

Meng Chijian, meanwhile, was picking out fish bones while silently watching someone trying to pick out a sweet potato.

Ah Mian had no interest in the sweet potatoes she was already tired of eating. She first ate the tender meat from the fish belly that was put in her bowl, then finished the rice, and then she was about to stop eating. Meng Chijian placed a plate of smashed cucumber in front of her, and Ah Mian had no choice but to obediently continue eating.

After finishing his meal, Yuan Hua asked around and found out that there was an old ancestral hall in the village. He then thanked her profusely and left.

As soon as he left, A-Mian said that she was going to the city tomorrow too, because she had saved up a small basket of eggs at home to sell.

"It's too hot. We'll keep it for ourselves and not sell it," Meng Chijian said, rejecting the idea outright. He then took a basket of dry grass to burn some ashes.

“These chickens are raised by us. They’ve eaten a lot of vegetable leaves from our house. It’s not easy for them to lay eggs, so we can exchange them for some money. You don’t need to take me; I’ll ride Ah Dou to sell the eggs myself.”

Meng Chijian smiled, grabbed A Mian's left ear and pulled it upwards, making her cry out "Ouch, ouch!"

Then he said, "You're not allowed to go. It's hot, and you'll get heatstroke if you walk there. Don't expect me to pay for your medical treatment!"

A-Mian felt extremely embarrassed when her ear was pulled in front of Meng Jing.

However, this is indeed a difficult problem. If you stay in the scorching sun for an hour or two, you might really get sick.

She went to take a bath alone, feeling rather bored. That's one of the good things about summer. No need to boil water anymore; she just had to leave the water in the sun for an afternoon, and she could bathe in the evening.

After taking a bath, Ah Mian lay on the bamboo mat, her wet hair draped over her shoulders, weaving grasshoppers from a few long leaves.

As soon as Meng Chijian entered the room, he paused again. His eyes caught sight of A Mian wearing an old, pale moon-colored undergarment because of the heat, with only a small rope tied to her smooth back. For some reason, he started picking a fight, "You put all sorts of random things in your pockets on the bed, isn't that dirty?"

Amian jumped up, her big eyes full of stubbornness. "I won't let you get dirty here. I'm going to sleep in the woodshed with Adou."

"..." Meng Chijian turned his back. "You're leaving after I just said a few words to you. If I don't take care of you, things will get out of control. You don't need to go. I'll go to the woodshed myself."

Amian got anxious: "You're not allowed to bully Adou!"

"In your heart, am I that kind of person?" Meng Chijian sneered, then closed the door and left.

A-Mian was about to explain when she saw his attitude and became extremely annoyed. He was the one who deliberately provoked her, so why did he act as if it was her fault?

Besides, she only found out from Xiao Jing that Meng Chijian had been working at the docks carrying heavy loads recently.

That's why she wanted to sell eggs to earn some money, since besides Meng Chijian, she was the biggest eater in the family.

She was originally thinking about how to make some more money, but eventually she got sleepy and her eyelids slowly stuck together.

Half-asleep, I felt a night breeze, and a palm-leaf fan seemed to be constantly swaying, which was very refreshing.

When she woke up the next day, she was still alone in the room.
