Chapter Forty Arrival at the Border

At noon, a line of iron cavalry marched out from the two city gates of the capital city of Da Gan in opposite directions. These were the guards of Prince Cheng and Emperor Gu Yifeng.

The real military force requires two people to use military tallies to dispatch troops to various prefectures and counties in Dagan, and with the imperial edict as their command, they can lead the army all the way to the border to provide support.

As for the capital, Gu Yifeng has handed over all the power to handle government affairs to Fang Xuan. If anyone is dissatisfied with the proposal, they can go to the Grand Secretary of the Cabinet for a review.

Once on his BMW, Gu Yifeng didn't dare slow down, urging the troops to speed up along the way.

With guidance from two accompanying generals, they only stopped occasionally at post stations, and most of the time they marched through the night.

In just three days, the group had traveled a distance, mobilizing 20,000 troops from the nearest prefecture to the capital of Da Gan. The remaining 30,000 troops would take about three more days to be mobilized.

When no one was around, Gu Yifeng even activated the system in his tent.

"System, system! Can I still sign in to the system?"

Gu Yifeng asked somewhat nervously. After all, he was not in the Heavenly Prison now, and he was really worried that he would not be able to use his cheat ability. He was still a little flustered to go and fight against the Great Chu.

"The system has detected that the host has entered the next stage of the main quest. The check-in system has been automatically upgraded. Please find a special location to check in. The more unusual the location, the richer the reward."

The system's voice echoed in his mind, sounding rather mechanical, clearly an automated response.

Hearing this, Gu Yifeng felt relieved. As long as his cheat system worked, he felt confident and wouldn't be completely insecure when facing the Great Chu, which could lead to making wrong decisions, a fatal mistake for any leader.

Since the system hadn't crashed, he naturally chose to sign in immediately.

On the first day of the march, the reward in the camp was much worse than Gu Yifeng had expected. He was only given a bugle, which could boost the morale of the entire army and increase the incentive value of all soldiers by one level when blown.

One layer of motivation can grant soldiers a brief state of frenzy when their physical strength reaches its limit, making them immune to pain and increasing their strength and reaction speed.

However, the effect only lasts for the duration of an incense stick. After that, all effects will backfire, taking effect instantly. People with insufficient willpower will faint or even die.

Therefore, this horn can only be used to deal with some sudden emergencies.

In the following days, Gu Yifeng became much more cautious. He would specifically ask the two generals where they had arrived at their marching positions, and then try to find special places to check in.

The system lived up to expectations, giving him more Mo Dao teams and Shenji battalions. After tallying it up, he now has a total of 20,000 Mo Dao teams and 3,000 Shenji battalions.

With 23,000 troops, they were more than enough to crush an enemy force more than twice their size, making them an absolute lion on the battlefield.

...

Urged on by Gu Yifeng, the 50,000-strong army finally arrived at the front line after half a month. Within half a month, the Chu army advanced in an orderly manner, never seeking personal gain, and actually captured another county.

Such effective siege efficiency and absolutely brutal massacres almost completely enraged the Daqian Border Army, but even so, they still could not stop the enemy's iron hooves.

This demonstrates just how powerful the Chu army was.

By the time Gu Yifeng arrived, the Chu army had already launched its final assault on the city. Although the 50,000 troops were exhausted from their long march, they still had enough arrows to draw.

The simultaneous attack of 50,000 troops, accompanied by a rain of arrows, halted the Chu army's offensive and forced them to retreat. Seeing this, the Chu people had no choice but to sound the retreat.

On the city wall, Gu Yifeng narrowed his eyes and looked at the battlefield in the distance. Now, the Great Chu had invaded the territory of Da Gan. The first line of defense had been broken, and most of the counties and cities behind it had no natural defenses to defend.

The battlefield is currently flat, surrounded by endless yellow sand. To determine the outcome, one must either rely on a surprise attack or focus on improving battle formations.

Gu Yifeng observed for a long time, then quietly gave Qin Shan some instructions before leaving. He rode away from the city alone and activated the system in a small mountain valley three miles outside the city.

"Why are you calling me again? If you're not going to sign in, don't wake me up, okay?"

The system's impatient voice rang out, this time it was much more humane.

"Quickly, release all the troops I've signed in with."

Gu Yifeng said excitedly.

"Are you sure? Once you release it, you can't put it back."

The system responded coldly.

Gu Yifeng naturally nodded. The system made no further sound, but beams of blue light shone down in front of him, and the already narrow mountain valley instantly became crowded.

However, thanks to the system's careful planning, the army of 23,000 men was accommodated precisely, no more and no less.

Everyone looked at Gu Yifeng, and then knelt down on one knee in unison.

"The Mo Dao Brigade pays respects to Your Majesty!"

"The Divine Machine Battalion pays respects to Your Majesty!"

The two armies, which were considered the strongest in the dynasty in Gu Yifeng's previous life memories, were now kneeling before him, which made him feel quite excited.

"Rise, everyone. A moment later, or perhaps tomorrow, I will have a battle with the Chu people. Listen to the horns to act. If one horn sounds, send out 10,000 Mo Dao soldiers. If two horns sound, send out 20,000. If three horns sound, all of you attack at once. Do you understand?"

Gu Yifeng slowly began to speak, then took out the horn he had obtained from the system and waved it in front of everyone. The soldiers immediately nodded in agreement.

Only then did he ride away, satisfied, leaving the 23,000-strong army to rest and prepare.

Upon returning to the city, Qin Shan immediately went to Gu Yifeng's side and presented him with the latest military reports.

Looking at the numerous defeats above, all piled up with the corpses of countless soldiers, the name that appeared most frequently in the Chu army was Chu Tianfeng. This person was the second prince of the Chu royal family. Similar to the Prince Cheng, he was sent out to his fiefdom a long time ago.

During the war, this vassal king was transferred to the front lines by the Emperor of Chu. He was a top-notch fighter and strategist, and fought several battles against Da Gan with almost no defeats.

"Is that all? We sent reinforcements today, and the Chu Kingdom didn't even offer any response?"

Gu Yifeng remained silent for a long time before putting away the military report and asking a question.

"Your Majesty, Chu Tianfeng seems quite confident. He did not send a military report back, but instead boasted that he would adjust his army formation and fight again, saying that he could defeat my 50,000 troops tomorrow."

Qin Shan answered honestly.

"We'll see."

Gu Yifeng sneered, and then walked into the camp of Taxiguan, the western border pass, together with Qin Shan.

The generals were discussing military matters on the sand table when they saw him and clasped their hands in salute.

Just then, the sound of war drums suddenly rang out from outside the pass. The drums continued, followed by the sound of iron hooves. This could only mean one thing: the Chu army had launched a night attack.

This was not uncommon during wartime, and the garrison commander inside the pass immediately came out of his tent and waved his military flag.
