Chapter 118 Don't you understand?
Lin Yao stared at him for a few seconds: "How come you've been as perverted as ever for decades?"
Xie Xingchen leaned back in his chair, his posture very relaxed. Hearing the familiar tone, he felt his long-numbed senses slowly returning.
I'm finally living like a human being again; for the past few years, I was like a walking corpse.
He became more cheerful and relaxed: "No, even more perverted. Don't you know? When people are cooped up in one place for too long, they start having some very embarrassing thoughts."
"What?" Lin Yao asked casually.
Then, sensing a pause of one second, he immediately interrupted, "Alright, don't say anything, pretend I didn't ask."
Xie Xingchen stared at his bright red earlobes: "I haven't even said anything yet, why are you panicking?"
Lin Yao: "......"
He sensed from this subtle gap that Xie Xingchen's perverse thoughts were definitely not something that could be brought to the table.
Lin Yao said with certainty, "It must be very filthy."
"Tell me, what does 'filthy' mean?" Xie Xingchen asked lazily.
Lin Yao swallowed hard. He had been influenced by this person a bit before, and it was easy for his mind to drift into a bunch of trashy, lewd thoughts: "I'm not saying anything more, I'm hanging up."
"We haven't spoken in years, and Boyan even gave up his phone. You're going to hang up after just a couple of sentences?" Xie Xingchen wished the video call would stay on 24/7, even while showering or sleeping.
Listening to the sounds outside the dormitory, people coming and going, Lin Yao was very vigilant: "He Li will be back in a little while."
“We didn’t do anything, so what if he comes back? Can’t you call me in front of him?” Xie Xingchen asked.
Lin Yao gave a slight smirk: "You didn't do anything wrong, yet you're using someone else's phone and making a video call so secretly. Do you even think that makes sense?"
Quite clever, not fooled at all.
Xie Xingchen stared at him, still wanting to ask, "Do you still like me as much as before?"
I couldn't bring myself to ask.
He owed Lin Yao too much. He had rashly come here, and meeting him was already a luxury. How could he be so greedy as to expect that even their feelings would be preserved intact?
More than two years have passed since the last time the code 002 was used in the communicator, and he doesn't know what Lin Yao is thinking.
However, he didn't refuse the hand-holding or the video call today.
At least, she doesn't dislike me, right? If all else fails, I can always win her back.
Seeing him fall silent, Lin Yao asked, "What the hell are you thinking about now?"
"I'm thinking about where I should sit during the dinner later." Xie Xingchen considered the arrangement of the long table. "I definitely can't sit next to you, how about across from me?"
Lin Yao's temples throbbed; he felt as if Xie Xingchen had gone mad.
He had been remarkably calm in the previous few years, so calm that he had even begun to doubt whether the other party had simply drifted away naturally. Yet this time, he risked alerting the other party and desperately approached him.
"Isn't this a bit inappropriate?"
"Isn't it inappropriate to just sit across from each other without saying a word?" Xie Xingchen compromised, "Then how about diagonally across?"
Lin Yao softened and said, "Okay."
The two stared at each other silently for a few seconds. It seemed like they rarely had a video chat like this before. Xie Xingchen was afraid that the other party would misunderstand, so he explained, "Actually, before... I thought about getting a new number and calling you like this, but I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to resist wanting to see you."
Seeing a face and hearing a voice can make longing grow wildly.
Just like now, after sending a message, I want to talk; after a video call, I want to hug. Human desires are endless and will only go further.
Lin Yao hummed in agreement: "I know, I'm not blaming you."
He also considered using someone else's phone to contact the other party. There were many people around him who had connections with Xie Xingchen. No matter how far the Alliance Leader's reach extended, it was impossible for him to monitor everyone's communication records.
But that's just how it is; I don't dare.
If you reveal your emotions too much, you won't be able to take them back, and it will be even harder to bear when you can't contact the other person anymore. It's better to just give up on the idea altogether.
"Yaoyao, it's almost over," Xie Xingchen said in a low voice. "I will give you an explanation."
"Don't push yourself too hard." Lin Yao wasn't good with words. "I...I'm not in a rush either."
Xie Xingchen recalled the person standing next to Lin Yao when he arrived that morning, who asked in a nonchalant tone, "I'm in a hurry. Are you and Duan Zheng very familiar now?"
If we don't finish this soon, someone will dig up the corner of the wall.
"It's alright, he's on Sunday."
Their conversation was mostly casual, with Lin Yao answering whatever he asked. "After you left, it was just him and me fighting one-on-one. He wasn't very good before, but his personality has improved a lot in the last two years."
Xie Xingchen gave an "oh" and began to dredge up old grievances in a sarcastic tone: "He has a good personality. He locked the two of us in the bathroom and we almost got into a fight."
Lin Yao: "......"
Lin Yao noticed his subtle displeasure.
After thinking for a moment, he tried to explain: "It's just a simple teammate relationship. He's quite capable and apologized for what happened back then, so I didn't hold it against him."
Xie Xingchen used to think that Lin Yao was soft-hearted, so he could forgive a lot of things.
But now, he doesn't like this soft-heartedness, yet he can't intervene.
After all, it was because Lin Yao was soft-hearted that he didn't criticize himself and the Xie family too harshly because of the report, and chose to let me handle it.
Xie Xingchen, expressionless, revealed the truth behind it: "So, in the past few years, you and Duan Zheng have been very close."
Even the slow-witted Lin Yao could tell he was jealous, so he distanced himself, saying, "Just ordinary teammates, not close at all."
“My teammates and I share a dorm, we live together day and night, and we go on missions together. Aren’t you guys the same?” Xie Xingchen raised an eyebrow.
"I'm an Omega, I won't sleep in the same room with any Alpha other than... except He Li and you," Lin Yao said dryly. "Are you angry?"
"I'm angry with myself." Xie Xingchen lowered his head and took a drag on his cigarette, his voice muffled. "I should have been the one with you, but now an ordinary teammate is spending more time with you than I am."
He had thought that meeting would ease all the unpleasantness, but now he felt the dull pain of the aftereffects of the separation, a trauma he might never be able to let go of for the rest of his life.
Lin Yao knew he was getting stuck on something, but didn't know how to comfort him.
In fact, they were separated by four years that neither of them could fill, a painful situation they could not avoid facing.
"Xie Xingchen," Lin Yao called his name.
The other party just responded listlessly, showing no interest whatsoever.
"How can I make you happy?" Lin Yao was very slow to understand emotions. When they first started dating, he said that he needed someone to teach him. "Tell me, I don't know."
Xie Xingchen shook his head and exhaled a puff of smoke calmly: "You don't need to coax me, it's my fault."
Lin Yao felt even more depressed.
Now that Teacher Xie is on strike, he doesn't even have anyone to guide him and doesn't know where to start.
Just then, the sound of the door opening came from outside. He said in a low voice, "He Li is back. I'll hang up now."
"Okay, see you later," Xie Xingchen said before hanging up.
"Brother Yao, here you go. All the instructor information you requested. I went around greeting them one by one." He Li came in panting, using one of the pages as a fan. "I'm exhausted. Don't you dislike socializing? What do you need this for?"
“Take a look at my colleagues.” Lin Yao looked at the table next to which a black pen had succinctly written down the rough personality traits of everyone. He couldn’t help but admire He Li’s growth over the past two years. “He’s so fast at gathering information. He’s really amazing.”
He Li chuckled and said, "Of course, I'm the news department's police dog."
I don't know what's so proud about being a police dog.
Lin Yao smiled, then quickly went through the pile of instructors' files, trying to figure out who might be Xie Hengzhi's spy.
The probability of him finding new students is very low. To be able to easily monitor them and obey orders from superiors without leaking information, the only possible candidate is an instructor transferred from various military departments.
Including them, there are ten people in total. We'll find out more during dinner tonight.
"Did you see Boyan when you first arrived?" Lin Yao desperately needed a strategist, since there was still a jealous person over there who needed to be appeased.
He Li looked at him suspiciously for a few seconds, then tilted his head and said, "Smoking in the hallway outside. Are you looking for him?"
Lin Yao hummed in agreement, then stood up and asked, "Do you mind?"
"What do I care about?" He Li was completely confused. "I think all of you were acting strange during this meeting, especially you. You seem very guilty right now."
Lin Yao raised his hand and touched his face, thinking that he probably didn't have any expression: "No, I don't think so."
“You have this guilty feeling that you’re secretly seeing me cheating on my girlfriend behind my back.” He Li observed the shifty look in his eyes. “But that’s impossible. Our tastes are probably quite different.”
Lin Yao: ""
To be fair, his description was quite accurate.
Lin Yao coughed lightly: "You're overthinking it. Boyan isn't your girlfriend."
"That's true. You go ahead, he'll have to go back to his dorm soon." He Li lazily lay back in his chair, sprawled out, and started playing the game, completely oblivious to everything else.
Lin Yao pushed open the door, went out, found the person, and explained in a few words the jealousy he felt during the video call with Xie Xingchen earlier.
With a helpless tone, he said, "I can't just let Duan Zheng leave my team. He's doing just fine. What can I do to make him happy?"
Cheng Boyan looked at him like he was a rare animal: "It's strange that you're still troubled by this kind of thing. I think he just lacks a sense of security. After all, he hasn't been by your side for several years. That's a given fact, and it's not something you can eliminate by just saying a few words to comfort him. Take it slow."
Lin Yao nodded: "That makes sense."
She paused for a moment, then said, "If you're so knowledgeable, how come you haven't been in a relationship yet?"
They are very good at sticking into the lungs.
Cheng Boyan laughed in exasperation: "He Li's ability to shut people up with just one word must have been learned from you, you blockhead with a sharp tongue."
Lin Yao wasn't angry; he smiled, his eyes crinkling.
His expression didn't look as cool and aloof as the last time he saw him; he looked more like a carefree, pampered young master.
He said sincerely, "Thank you, I'm leaving now."
Cheng Boyan watched him turn around, his back view regaining its usual indifference, and he quickly walked to his dormitory door, knocked twice, and then half-squatted down for a moment.
He got up again and left swiftly, the whole process taking no more than two seconds, as swift as completing a task.
When Xie Xingchen opened the door, he only saw Cheng Boyan watching the commotion from a short distance away; there was no one else there.
Looking down, I saw a bright orange candy wrapped in pretty paper at the doorway.
His phone vibrated, and he swiped to open it.
[AA Baby]: Here's some candy for you, don't be sad.
Xie Xingchen picked it up, peeled it open, and put it in his mouth. A sweet and sour freshness exploded in his mouth.
He looked down and chuckled, "You still don't know how to date? You're just trying to hook up with people."
