Chapter 62 Blood Boiling
"The most important person." Xie Xingchen grasped the key word.
Having finally gotten him to say something so weighty, he didn't want it to just pass by so easily: "What counts as important?"
Lin Yao was stumped by the question.
He was clumsy and slow-witted; no one had taught him how to interact with people.
He Li, the only friend she's had all these years, is someone the other party has been relentlessly pursuing.
After all this time, I still can't learn to please others, I can't be obedient, and even when I try to coax someone, I can only say something vague and ambiguous, without knowing how to define it.
"It's alright," Xie Xingchen said gently. "For me, the most important meaning is multifaceted."
"Share all your feelings with me immediately."
"You need to subconsciously treat me as the person you trust the most."
"Besides yourself, you should put me before everyone else."
"besides........"
And learn to love me.
Xie Xingchen paused, omitting the last sentence: "Lin Yao, I don't know if there's something wrong with my understanding, but is this what you mean by the most important person?"
Lin Yao meticulously broke down each word, thinking about it over and over again.
He had never mentioned the lab or the past to anyone before. The fact that he was willing to tell Xie Xingchen about this already showed that he placed Xie Xingchen in a very important and trusted position.
But this person was really greedy; even that wasn't enough, he insisted on having it personally stamped and confirmed.
Lin Yao paused for a few seconds, then nodded very seriously: "Yes, that's what I mean."
Xie Xingchen's lips curled up, unable to hide his joy.
So she took a step closer to him, raised her hand, and rubbed the back of his head: "I'm really happy."
Lin Yao endured the pain of his fingers piercing through his hair, his whole body stiff.
When will this ever end?
Xie Xingchen hadn't withdrawn his hand yet, and continued, "Then can I touch your head so casually from now on?"
Lin Yao closed his eyes, suppressing the urge to kick him: "...Don't push your luck."
Xie Xingchen repeated what he had said before: "He Li can't touch me, and neither can anyone else. So how do we distinguish me from others, and how do we demonstrate the most important uniqueness?"
His thinking is unconventional, and his logic is ingenious.
Lin Yao gritted his teeth and squeezed out three words: "You can touch it."
Xie Xingchen was very good at seizing opportunities: "How long can I touch you? Three minutes, ten minutes, or the whole night? I need to know where your bottom line is so I won't make you angry."
Lin Yao: ".........."
You're about to cross my line. Be patient, be patient some more.
Lin Yao took a deep breath, enduring the tingling sensation in his hair: "There's no time limit, you can stay as long as you want."
Xie Xingchen looked down at his expression. His lips were taut, and his eyes were like knives. If he continued teasing him, he would really explode. He knew very well when to stop.
So he slid his palm down and lightly touched the back of her neck before withdrawing it: "Now I'm feeling the most important treatment."
Lin Yao wanted to kick him into the river next to him to feed the fish.
Xie Xingchen said slowly, "Let's take a walk. We'll be back to hard work when we get back."
Before Lin Yao could speak, the communicators on both of them suddenly went off loudly, and a large number of guards suddenly poured out of Pei Yizhong's residence not far away, freezing the previously relaxed atmosphere.
That mouth of hers looks like it's been blessed.
Xie Xingchen picked up the communicator, and Hall's voice came through: "All personnel in the combat zone, assemble immediately. In case of an emergency, all personnel must wear bulletproof vests and carry firearms. If your life is at risk, you may fire to protect yourself."
Lin Yao and he exchanged a glance, and both of them froze.
A long line of military vehicles sped up beside them. Pei Yizhong was sitting in the passenger seat of the first one. He waved and showed the two of them how to get in: "Hall said you're going to the war zone. I'm going too. Get in."
I had always known that General Pei always took the lead in battle, but at this moment, I finally had a concrete understanding of it.
Having been providing support for the past two days, Lin Yao tentatively asked, "Has the enemy returned?"
“No.” Pei Yizhong raised his hand and rubbed his temples. “The enemy has retreated; this time it’s our own people.”
Xie Xingchen countered, "What do you mean? Is there internal strife?"
You'll know when you get there.
Pei Yizhong said in a low voice, "This is not the first time. There were already large-scale casualties after the war. Every time, before we could fully recover, our soldiers would suddenly start killing each other."
He lowered his eyes, his face full of grief: "Because each time there are heavy casualties, it is called the Blood Plague. That kind of crazy state is like a plague, spreading extremely fast and unstoppable. The only option is to kill them. To this day, we still cannot find the cause."
The methods used were extremely cruel and bloody.
"So, we're going there to kill our own people," Lin Yao said worriedly. "Isn't there any other way?"
Pei Yizhong turned his head and explained to him, "The Desolate Star wasn't called the Desolate Star before; it was called the Southern River Star. As the most populous and independent autonomous star, it was an important location for winning over political votes."
"But from some unknown day, people began to disappear one by one. When they returned, they were strong and most of them naturally became soldiers, and then the first blood plague occurred."
"Therefore, Nanhe Star no longer prospered, gradually declined, and became what it is today. Even its name has been given the name 'Desolation'," Lin Yao said slowly. "It must be man-made. Who is the manipulator behind it?"
Pei Yizhong glanced at Xie Xingchen and said meaningfully, "In my opinion, whoever benefits from the situation is likely the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. However, without evidence, we dare not make any rash statements."
Politics, votes, and the need for voting to elect the leader of the alliance with the highest power are easily associated with each other.
Xie Xingchen was very clever; he immediately understood the implication and remained silent.
Lin Yao also understood the implied meaning. He turned to look at the person sitting next to him, and gently patted the other person's hand as a form of comfort.
He knew, of course, how much Xie Hengzhi hated him, treating him like a toy, a bargaining chip, and a cure for Xie Xingchen's illness.
He trampled on his own self-esteem with the most condescending attitude, and his methods were ruthless. He probably did a lot of shady things behind the scenes.
But ultimately, he was very good to Xie Xingchen; he was Xie Xingchen's father and his closest blood relative.
Lin Yao was thinking of what to say to comfort him when Xie Xingchen spoke up with a very frank attitude: "If you are referring to my father, if he makes a mistake, I will personally send him to court."
Lin Yao was stunned.
"Then you're truly a filial son." Pei Yizhong said, whether in praise or sarcasm, it was unclear. "We've arrived."
"Brother Yao, why did you two come in the general's car?" He Li quickly handed over their bulletproof vests and guns, and said in a low voice, "Be careful, it's quite... bloody. It's the first time I've ever seen a scene like this. Because they're all our own people, the military didn't dare use mechs. It's all hand-to-hand combat and assassination. It's really crazy. I almost threw up."
Xie Xingchen looked at Lin Yao with concern: "Do you want to rest for two more days?"
After all, not long ago he would experience intermittent speech loss due to the corpses left after the war, and he had finally recovered. I'm afraid he might develop a second set of problems.
Lin Yao took a deep breath. Compared to last time, he was able to overcome his fear and look directly at the enemy. It was no big deal. He fastened his bulletproof vest: "I can't be a deserter for the rest of my life."
He gripped his sniper rifle and strode ahead, stepping into the open-air camp that had once been a combat zone. The air was thick with the stench of blood and a faint, lingering smell, which made one's heart pound violently.
"Do you smell anything?" Lin Yao asked in a low voice, aiming at the blood plague warriors fighting, and with great precision, he shot them in the head with one shot each.
"Blood." Xie Xingchen looked at him. "Did you smell something else?"
Lin Yao gave a soft "hmm," feeling strangely sensitive and agitated by this aura, as if being controlled and pulled by some force.
It's hot, it's irritating, my blood is boiling.
He aimed from a distance, but his hand holding the gun remained steady. As he fired, he said, "I wonder if some Alpha released some pheromones that made me a little restless."
Xie Xingchen calculated the days; it had been a while since the last mark, and it had already expired.
But he can't mark him a third time now, or they'll be bound together for life. Even if Lin Yao is willing, he can't do that.
Xie Xingchen gently released his pheromones and reached out to hold his shoulder: "Come with me."
The two fought side by side, both top-notch snipers, clearing out the plague-infested hordes with incredible speed, headshots with every shot, leaving corpses strewn across the battlefield.
Lin Yao closed his eyes and then opened them again. Apart from being a little short of breath, he had overcome the fear that had paralyzed him when he saw the corpses last time. He calmly shot the last few in front of him, then suddenly stopped in his tracks. Suddenly, his temples throbbed so violently that they felt like they were about to explode.
"What's wrong?" Xie Xingchen asked, looking at him.
Lin Yao suddenly took two steps back, aimed his sniper rifle at Xie Xingchen, and put his finger on the trigger.
Xie Xingchen's heart stopped: "Lin Yao, what are you doing?"
Lin Yao's heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to explode. His vision distorted into a kaleidoscope of colors, shrinking to the center of the training field's red heart. Shot, hit.
"Lin Yao, Lin Yao, look at me." Xie Xingchen tried to walk closer to him, but his chest was pressed against the muzzle of a sniper rifle.
Fire! Hit the bullseye, just like in training.
It felt like a voice was whispering in my ear.
Lin Yao suddenly closed his eyes, smelled the faint scent of agave, and his consciousness cleared for a moment, but his finger had already pressed the trigger.
"Xie Xingchen! Get out of the way!!!" He reacted quickly, suddenly changing direction to the right.
The bullet veered off course and struck a plague victim in the distance who was slaughtering his own kind, causing blood to explode.
Lin Yao was terrified and trembling uncontrollably.
When she opened her eyes again, she only saw Xie Xingchen standing there motionless.
He spoke calmly, "Lin Yao, were you trying to kill me just now?"
