Chapter 4: Lonely and Sleepless Night

Is Lin Feng a reserved person?

Having lived with him for three years, Su Ling has a deep understanding of this.

If he didn't ask, he wouldn't take the initiative to speak up, and even if he did, he wouldn't necessarily get an answer. Especially in the past six months, Lin Feng's "sullenness" had intensified, and it had become so frequent that Su Ling felt powerless and didn't know how to communicate with him.

"Well, let's not talk about him." Lin Zhou saw the worry between Su Ling's brows and changed the subject, "How is the house in the countryside? Are you used to living there?"

"Very good." Su Ling composed himself, changed the camera, and held up his phone to let Lin Zhou visit the house.

Lin Zhou saw the furnishings in the room through the screen and exclaimed in amazement.

"Xiao Ling! You've made a killing! This chair, this table, this shelf, this screen, and even the porcelain vase in the corner—they're all antiques, right?"

"It should be. This house has a history of hundreds of years." Su Ling came to the hall, opened the door, and pointed his phone outside. "There is a courtyard in front. It's a garden style and quite beautiful."

Unfortunately, it’s dark now and there are no lawn lights, so I can’t see the scenery clearly.

Lin Zhou was originally worried that Su Ling would live in a dilapidated earthen brick house in the countryside, but now looking at this quaint house, his heart finally settled down.

"In addition to the house, my second grandfather also left me ten acres of land and a mountain that he had contracted for fifty years," said Su Ling.

Lin Zhou's eyes widened in surprise. "Ten acres of land? A mountain he's contracted for fifty years? Your second grandfather is a hermit!"

Su Ling sighed: "When I got the inheritance, I was as surprised as you."

Lin Zhou blinked and touched his chin: "So... are you planning to farm in the countryside?"

Su Ling was stunned: "Me? Farming?"

Asking a lazy, incompetent man to farm, are you kidding me? He's already lying down before he's even planted half an acre of land. How unreliable!

Lin Zhou said, "We can't just let it go to waste, right? I'm free anyway, so I might as well plant some flowers!"

Su Ling laughed: "Can growing flowers be the same as farming?"

There is only one pot of flowers, which he can put on the balcony, water, fertilize and let it bask in the sun. Farming is a long-term physical work, which he definitely cannot do.

Lin Zhou suggested: "If you really don't want to grow it yourself, just rent it to someone else!"

Su Ling nodded: "I'll think about it."

After chatting for a while, the two ended the video.

Looking at the darkened screen, Su Ling sighed softly, closed the door, walked around the wall of the hall, and went upstairs.

The night in the countryside is unusually quiet, and the creaking sound made by your feet on the wooden stairs is particularly harsh.

It was Su Ling's first time living in such a remote and large house, and he felt a little uncomfortable adapting. During the day, with Li Dahai and Aunt Zhang around, he didn't feel scared. But at night, when he was alone, walking up the long and narrow stairs, he felt a chill down his spine.

"Prosperity, democracy, civilization, harmony, freedom, equality..." Su Ling finished reading it in one breath, and then he bravely went upstairs.

There are three rooms on the second floor, the master bedroom in the middle and the secondary bedrooms on both sides.

Aunt Zhang said that the second grandfather lived in the master bedroom when he was alive. If Su Ling was superstitious, he could redecorate it, open the windows and let the air dry for two months, and the bad luck would go away.

Su Ling then temporarily lived in the second bedroom on the east side, planning to hire someone to renovate the master bedroom after a while.

The second bedroom was simply furnished with an old wardrobe against the wall and a 1.5-meter-wide wooden bed. The bedding on the bed was bought by him from Aunt Zhang.

A few days ago, Aunt Zhang used new cotton to make two quilts. She originally wanted to keep them for her son and daughter-in-law who would come home for the New Year, but since Su Ling needed them urgently, she gave them to him first.

Su Ling naturally couldn't take it for free, so he paid for it and also bought a bed sheet and a bedspread. Aunt Zhang smiled and said buy two get one free, and gave him an old pillow that was not used.

Four suitcases were neatly placed in the corner. Su Ling opened one, found his underwear and pajamas, and went into the bathroom to wash.

When Second Grandpa renovated the house, he added a modern bathroom to the bedroom, but there was no water heater inside, so Su Ling quickly rinsed himself with cold water.

Taking a cold shower on a spring night was so painful. After the shower, Su Ling quickly got into the quilt, curled up and shivered.

The newly fluffed cotton quilt smells like the sun and is soft and dry, but it cannot compare to the silk quilt at home. The rough quilt cover and sheets rub against my skin, and I feel uncomfortable no matter how I lie down, and I have no desire to sleep.

The unfamiliar environment, unfamiliar room, and unfamiliar bed all made Su Ling feel uneasy.

After tossing and turning for a long time, my mind became clearer and clearer. When I thought of the ancestral tablets in the independent house in the backyard, I broke out in a cold sweat.

I pulled the quilt over my head. After a while, I felt stuffy and had difficulty breathing. I couldn't help but lift the quilt to get some fresh air.

In the past, when watching horror movies, Lin Feng always held him while he slept. He felt especially safe in his broad arms. Now he was alone in a remote countryside, unable to sleep. Thinking about it, Su Ling couldn't help but feel a lump in his throat.

When they were dating, their relationship was as sweet as honey, so why did it become colder after they got married?

Feeling depressed and uncomfortable, Su Ling took out the mobile phone from under the pillow, opened the photo album, and found that there was nothing in it. Then he remembered that this phone was newly bought. He had turned off the previous phone and left it at home for fear that Lin Feng would locate it.

I opened the app and downloaded a small sleep app. I played soothing music to relax my mind and unconsciously thought back to the time when I first fell in love with Lin Feng.

Three years ago, he and Lin Feng were still students at S University. Lin Feng was two years his senior and about to graduate. One of them was in the Art Department, the other in the Finance Department. They didn't usually interact much, until that year's school anniversary gala, when Su Ling was persuaded by his classmates to sign up for a performance. That's when they finally got to know each other up close.

As the evening's planner, Lin was meticulous, patiently demanding redos if there were even a single mistake during rehearsal, striving for perfection. He was a man of few words, but his presence was impressive; a single glance would have his juniors immediately correcting their mistakes.

Su Ling's performance was at the end, but he always came early, sitting in the corner with his guitar, playing and singing softly while waiting for rehearsal. Occasionally, he would feel a burning gaze falling on him. He would look up to find it, but the gaze would quickly disappear.

When he finished rehearsal and waited for Senior Lin to point out his faults, the other party just nodded at him and said nothing.

This puzzled Su Ling. Senior Lin could always point out the flaws in other people's programs, so why did he become so silent when it came to his turn?

He told Lin Zhou about it, and Lin Zhou laughed at him for making a fuss.

"Our little Lingling is beautiful, sings beautifully, and plays the guitar well. She looks like a real star when she stands on the stage. You have no idea how crazy the younger students and senior students in the audience go when you sing. Of course, there are also a group of younger students and seniors who are fascinated by you. If Lin Feng were gay, he would definitely not be able to resist you, this beauty!"

Su Ling felt that Lin Zhou was exaggerating!

Lin Feng looks like a serious person, how could he be tempted by "beauty"?

What's more, the Su family and the Lin family are business competitors, so it's good enough that Lin Feng didn't mock him.

On the night of the school anniversary, Su Ling dressed gorgeously and elegantly for the stage effect. After the performance, she received warm applause from the audience.

Su Ling bowed and left the stage, and removed his makeup backstage. Suddenly, a large bouquet of roses appeared in front of him. He looked up in surprise, staring blankly at the handsome man so close to him.

"The performance was a success." Lin Feng's voice was low and gentle, which made Su Ling's ears soften.

"Thank you...thank you." Su Ling reached out and hugged the rose, his face flushed.

"Let's go out for a walk together?" Lin Feng asked.

Su Ling met his deep black eyes and nodded involuntarily. When he came to his senses, he was already at the dating place on campus.

Su Ling had long forgotten what he said that night. He only clearly remembered Lin Feng's three-dimensional handsome features, tall stature, and straight long legs.

Many people pursued Su Ling at school, but he remained indifferent. He was still unsure about his sexual orientation and didn't want to fall in love blindly. That was until Lin Feng showed up, gave him roses, and quietly walked him around the campus. The sweet sound of a cello echoed softly in his ears, and Su Ling's heart began to beat wildly. The buds of love sprouted, tender and fragrant.

"I...can I ask you to be my model?" Before returning to the dormitory, Su Ling blurted out stupidly.

Art students all share a common trait: the pursuit of all things beautiful, using their brushes to record, enjoy, and praise them bit by bit. He excels in traditional Chinese painting, and is also proficient in sketching and oil painting. Lin Feng's facial features and figure make him an excellent model.

"Okay." Lin Feng nodded.

Su Ling happily returned to the dormitory holding a bouquet of roses, and was teased by Lin Zhou.

In this way, they slowly started to interact with each other.

Lin Feng rarely says touching love words, but often expresses his love through actions.

He generously took off his clothes to be Su Ling's exclusive model, gave Su Ling an expensive watch, brought breakfast to Su Ling every day, and when Su Ling stayed in the studio late, he would sit quietly by and read a book.

For a while, they became the most enviable couple in S University, but only Su Ling knew that after the two confirmed their relationship, they had not had any intimate contact.

Su Ling once wondered if he wasn't attractive enough, otherwise why didn't his boyfriend look at him with a trace of desire?

Finally, after two months of dating, Su Ling and Lin Feng kissed.

It was New Year's Day, and many couples went out of school for dates, and they were no exception.

It is said that women dress up to please themselves. Men who are in love will also show their best side in front of their lovers.

Su Ling wore fashionable clothes, let down her shoulder-length curly hair, and dressed like an elegant and noble prince as she walked towards her boyfriend who was waiting outside the dormitory building.

Lin Feng had obviously dressed up carefully, but he was warmer than Su Ling and wore a long black wool coat.

Seeing that Su Ling was wearing thin clothes, he didn't say anything, but just held Su Ling's hand and put it in his pocket.

Su Ling was inexplicably moved and clasped his fingers tightly in his pocket.

The two took a taxi to the bustling city center, strolled along the pedestrian street, watched performances in the mall, drank coffee and listened to music, had a steak dinner, and finally came to the most famous viewing pier in S City, where they leaned on the railing and admired the fireworks show at sea.

It was early in the morning, the night was cold, and the sea breeze made Su Ling shiver. He sneezed several times and regretted that he had worn too little in order to look good. Suddenly, his body warmed up, and the thick wool coat draped over his shoulders blocked the cold.

Su Ling's nose felt sore and her eyes were moist. She tilted her head back and couldn't help but peck her boyfriend's lips.

When he was about to move away, he was hugged by a pair of strong arms. Lin Feng lowered his head and held his pink lips, deepening the kiss.

Su Ling nestled passively in his arms. She felt dizzy from the kiss and felt hot all over. She almost turned into a puddle of water in her boyfriend's arms.

After a long time, the two reluctantly parted and stared at each other affectionately. The gorgeous fireworks bloomed in the night sky, becoming the most beautiful background.

"Let's get married!" Lin Feng said in a low voice.

"——Okay." Su Ling agreed without hesitation.

At that moment, he was certain and convinced that he wanted to spend his life with Lin Feng.

“Ding Dong—Ding Dong—”

The urgent ring of the doorbell woke Su Ling. He opened his eyes drowsily and checked his phone. It was already eight o'clock in the morning. He suddenly woke up and sat up.

"hiss--"

He frowned and held his waist.

The hard bed is so uncomfortable. Even with a layer of cotton bedding, my back and waist still ache when I sleep on it.

The doorbell was still ringing, but he ignored the pain and struggled to get up.

There was no constant temperature air conditioning in the room. When Su Ling came out of the quilt, he was instantly exposed to the cold wind and sneezed twice. He sniffed his nose, got out of bed, found clothes from the box, changed hurriedly, and quickly went downstairs with his slightly curly shoulder-length hair.

Yesterday he made an appointment with Aunt Zhang that she would come over to clear the weeds in the yard at 7:30 in the morning, but he couldn't sleep at night and was lost in thought until the early morning, so he overslept.

“Aa ...

When the gate opened, Aunt Zhang's round face was revealed.

"Sorry, Aunt Zhang, I got up late." Su Ling said embarrassedly.

"It's okay, it's okay, I set the time too early." Aunt Zhang came once at 7:30, and seeing that the gate to the yard was closed, she knew that Su Ling had not gotten up yet, so she waited until 8 o'clock before coming to ring the doorbell.

Feeling Aunt Zhang's thoughtfulness, Su Ling felt warm in his heart.

"By the way, this is the steamed bun I made. If you don't mind, Xiao Su, you can have it as breakfast." Aunt Zhang handed Su Ling an old aluminum lunch box with a little panda printed on the lid.

Su Ling took it in a daze and said, "Thank you, Aunt Zhang."

"What are you thanking me for? You gave me a job, so I should thank you!" Aunt Zhang narrowed her eyes. "Just go eat, don't worry about me."

Su Ling was driven back into the house by her. She put the hot aluminum lunch box on the dining table, went upstairs to brush her teeth and wash her face, then went downstairs to sit at the eight-immortal table and eat steamed buns with boiled water.

I borrowed some boiled water from the grocery store yesterday and used it to make a bowl of noodles. Half the water was still in the thermos, a bit warm after a night, barely drinkable. The steamed buns were plump and white, not too sweet, but with a milky aroma. They were soft and incredibly delicious.

Su Ling finished his first breakfast in the countryside with relish.

Aunt Zhang took a sickle from the small warehouse at the back and bent over to cut the weeds in the yard. Su Ling stood on the corridor in front of the door and watched for a while, then walked forward and said, "Aunt Zhang, let's not weed today!"

Aunt Zhang straightened up and asked in confusion, "Not weeding? How can that be? I can't just take my salary for nothing!"

Seeing her anxious, Su Ling hurriedly said, "Manual weeding is too tiring. I want to buy a weeder and a leaf trimmer. It will be more convenient."

The Lin family's yard is large and full of plants. Aunt He usually uses a lawn mower and a trimmer to take care of it, which is quick and beautiful.

Aunt Zhang immediately objected: "Why buy a lawn mower? It's such a waste of money! I've worked here for over ten years, and I've always done manual weeding. Don't worry, I'm a very skilled weeder, and I guarantee I'll keep the garden beautifully clean."

Seeing that she insisted, Su Ling had no choice but to give up.

Aunt Zhang bent down and cut two handfuls of grass. Suddenly she remembered something and said to him, "Xiao Su, do you want to go to the mountain to visit the grave?"

Su Ling: "Huh?"
