Chapter 3 The Prey
Zhang Sheng was stunned for a moment, then realized what he meant, "Brother Ping, you mean...?"
Li Ping smirked, his smile lewd. "You said that girl's family doesn't care about her, right? Besides, she's not mentally sound; she can't even speak properly. Even if you told people about this, who would believe her?"
He leaned closer to Zhang Sheng and lowered his voice, "Brother, I've been dealing with those ordinary women for too long, I'm tired of it. This time I want to taste the real taste of a noble lady."
Zhang Sheng instantly understood Li Ping's despicable intentions.
As a man himself, his own hidden desires also began to stir.
But reason told him that if the hospital found out, he would lose his job, which, though easy, was hard-won, and might even end up in jail.
Thinking of this, Zhang Sheng frowned deeply.
Li Ping observed Zhang Sheng's reaction.
He knew Zhang Sheng well; his greed and desires only needed a little provocation to ignite a raging fire.
Li Ping stretched out his hand, spread his five fingers, and held up three fingers, waving them in front of Zhang Sheng's eyes.
"I'll give you this amount after it's done."
Zhang Sheng curled his lip, thinking to himself that Li Ping was too stingy, three thousand?
This is like giving money to a beggar.
Thirty thousand!
Li Ping emphasized his words.
A greedy light ignited in Zhang Sheng's eyes.
Li Ping casually put his arm around Zhang Sheng's shoulder, his face full of feigned intimacy.
"Hey bro, consider this money as pocket money. Think about it, it's super simple, it can be done in half an hour at most, and I guarantee no one will know."
Zhang Sheng licked his dry lips. "Don't worry, Brother Ping. I'll go scout ahead for you and let you know when the time is right."
Li Ping nodded in satisfaction, took out his phone, and quickly swiped the screen.
Shortly after, Zhang Sheng received a notification on his phone that 10,000 yuan had been transferred.
"I'll give you a portion first, to make things easier for you," Li Ping said with a smile.
For the next three days, Zhang Sheng carefully observed everything that happened in the hospital.
He figured out the time gaps between shifts of medical staff and also discovered that Dr. Wang, the duty director on the top floor, would lean back in his chair and doze off at midnight, snoring loudly.
Zhang Sheng felt the time was ripe.
He secretly prepared ether, rope, and tape.
These things might come in handy if that girl rebels.
On the night of the operation, the moonlight was dim, and the entire hospital was shrouded in darkness.
Zhang Sheng had Li Ping put on his second set of work uniform that he usually changed into, and the two of them crouched down and tiptoed into the hospital.
The corridor lights distorted the two people's shadows into grotesque shapes, which then spread towards the sixth floor with each step.
Zhang Sheng swallowed hard, nervously glancing left and right.
After confirming that Dr. Wang, who was on duty, was snoring loudly, he took a deep breath and winked at Li Ping.
The two walked toward the ward at the end of the corridor.
Their footsteps grew lighter and lighter, almost making no sound.
At the door of ward 602, the two stopped abruptly.
Li Ping's gaze fell on the patient's name card at the ward door, and he read out the name: "Lu Yao".
The way he said the name carried a nauseatingly obscene connotation.
Zhang Sheng and Li Ping exchanged a glance, their eyes gleaming with filthy desire.
They pressed their heads against the small window in the door, trying to get a better look at what was happening inside.
They eagerly anticipated seeing the girl lying on the bed, oblivious and helpless, letting them do whatever they wanted.
In the ward, the darkness was like a bottomless pool of stagnant water.
Only one figure sat quietly on the bed, blending into the endless darkness.
Zhang Sheng stared intently at the figure.
A strong sense of unease spread through his heart.
She sat there motionless, yet she exuded a chilling aura.
A sudden, sharp draft swept in without warning.
The wind howled as if a woman were crying, making the hairs on the back of Zhang Sheng's neck stand on end.
A terrible thought flashed through his mind: She's watching me.
He could almost feel those eyes coldly watching them, like they were looking at two ants who had walked right into a trap.
This unknown sense of oppression made Zhang Sheng's breathing rapid and heavy, and beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
Li Ping was also stunned by the eerie atmosphere.
He swallowed hard, his voice trembling, "...This? Isn't that girl an idiot? Zhang Sheng, are you sure..."
"Of course she is!"
To bolster his courage, Zhang Sheng suddenly raised his voice.
He forced himself to recall that path where he was completely at the mercy of others—
During his rounds last month, he stopped at the door of room 602.
Through the glass window, I saw the girl being manipulated by the nurse like a doll.
When I fed her the medicine, she obediently opened her mouth, her porcelain-like face showing a childlike innocence.
When he deliberately knocked on the window, the girl only turned her head slowly.
His eyes were as clear as glass washed by rain, reflecting his greedy face.
She didn't even know how to avoid his clingy gaze; she just unconsciously moved her lips.
The memories gave Zhang Sheng back his confidence.
It's just a pretty empty shell, he thought.
His fingers reached back for the ether bottle in his pocket.
Zhang Sheng's Adam's apple bobbed, and he forced a grin at Li Ping: "Look at you, you coward, you're just a fool..."
He pushed the door open abruptly, and the white beam of the flashlight cleaved through the darkness like a knife.
In the center of the beam of light, the girl remained seated cross-legged.
Her long, jet-black hair cascaded down like a waterfall, and her eyelashes drooped on her porcelain-white face, making her look like a sleeping doll.
Upon seeing this, Li Ping couldn't wait to reach out and touch that delicate face.
The girl suddenly raised her head.
Li Ping's hand froze in mid-air.
In Lu Yao's open eyes, it seemed as if a galaxy was turning upside down, and with each rotation, the temperature in the ward dropped by one degree.
Her long, flowing hair moved on its own without any wind, dancing eerily in the air.
"Zhang, Zhang Sheng..." Li Ping's voice was choked with sobs, dark stains appearing on his trouser legs, "I, I peed..."
A yellow talisman was now between Lu Yao's fingers.
The talisman spontaneously combusted without fire, and blood-red incantations emerged from the eerie blue flames.
With each syllable she pronounced, Li Ping would twitch, as if invisible threads were pulling at his internal organs.
Zhang Sheng finally thought of escaping, only to find his shadow stuck to the ground like asphalt.
“A thousand years have passed…” Lu Yao sneered, “Men’s dirty hands are still so disgusting.”
