Chapter 131 Delivering Meals

He thought about it carefully and realized that Lai Zi's actions were dishonest, and the villagers were also at fault for being so gossipy and saying everything.

He wasn't unaware of those offensive words, but, well, nobody wants to hand over their food to someone else, and it's natural to want to vent when you're unhappy.

He understood his people's feelings and didn't want to be too harsh. But he forgot how painful those words, like knives, would be to the young hearts of children.

With another sigh, Old Man Huang drove the oxcart away.

Huangjiakou, Huangjia Courtyard.

"Mother, everything's ready. Can we load it onto the cart?" Xie asked, patting the sealed earthenware jar.

A large earthenware jar was filled to the brim with stewed chicken and potatoes, while another large basket covered with a quilt was filled with steamed buns and dumplings.

"Xiao San, bring the cow over, let's go deliver the food."

"They've been brought over," Huang Xiaosan asked. "Mother, who went?"

“Me, your second sister-in-law and wife, and Xiao Si and Xiao Pang.”

When the group arrived, it was noon, and Lai Zigang had just told them to stop working.

"Xiao Er," Lai Zi looked at Huang Lao Er with a puzzled expression, "why didn't your aunt prepare any dry food for you?"

As he spoke, he handed over his own pancake.

"Brother Lai, don't eat this," Huang Lao Er pushed the pancake over and said in a low voice, "My mother will bring me food later, it will be hot and definitely better than this."

"Auntie is bringing food?" Lai Zi immediately thought of Huang Xiaosan's mysterious smile. He put the cold, hard pancake into his pocket and forced a smile. "Then I'll wait for Auntie to bring me food."

Anyway, he'll definitely be there.

The pancakes I bought tasted good, but they couldn't compare to a hot meal.

Huangshan also noticed the problem and was about to call for help when he saw the oxcart slowly approaching. "Auntie, what brings you here?"

"I've come to bring you food," Jiang Nuan jumped out of the car, and Lai Zi immediately unloaded the ceramic jars from the car.

"Fifth Aunt," Lai Zi smelled a meaty aroma, "is this meat and vegetables?"

"Yes, stewed chicken with potatoes, to help you regain your strength."

"For us?" Lai Zi asked thoughtfully. "Everyone gets a share?"

"Okay," Jiang Nuan gave him an approving look, "Come and help out, get the food early so we can eat early."

Even though repairing the river embankment was relatively easy, it was still hard work. The young men who were performing corvée labor were already starving and had taken out their dry rations to eat.

Suddenly, Lai Zi shouted, "Come and eat, or it'll be gone!"

"What kind of food do you want?" A young man looked at Lai Zi in confusion. "Does corvée labor include meals?"

"You're dreaming," someone next to him poured cold water on the idea. "How many years have you served? In which year were you provided with meals?"

“No,” another person’s voice trembled, “It really is. We’ve already caught the yellow tree. There were two steamed buns, a full bowl of vegetables, and I can even smell the meat.”

"What?"

Once the news was confirmed, everyone rushed forward, completely surrounding the newly set-up stall.

"Line up, one by one, everyone gets a share," Jiang Nuan shouted at the top of her lungs.

However, the effect was not significant.

"You all get in line, or you won't get any food," Lai Zi cursed. "Aunt Wu is kind-hearted and brought food especially for you bastards. I'm not going to put up with you. It's a waste of money to feed a bunch of ingrates. It makes me angry just thinking about it."

As soon as he finished speaking, the crowd quickly lined up, and then, Guaijue walked over nervously to get his food.

"Two steamed buns, one baozi, and half a bowl of chicken for each person," Xie Shi cleared her throat and began. "If you're not full, drink more porridge. There's also a ceramic pot of porridge next to you; there are spoons for you to help yourself."
