In no time, half of the people had agreed.
Upon seeing this, Chief Huang's face turned pale instantly.
He didn't expect these people to be so ruthless.
"You, you all, very good, very good!" Chief Huang pointed at the crowd, his fingers trembling.
After a moment of silence, Chief Huang compromised, “I can step down, but only after the autumn harvest. Otherwise, I will not hand over the family tree and seal, even if it means my death.”
"You're really something," Uncle Huang laughed in exasperation at these words. "Your own son isn't willing to step down. This old man has certainly learned something new today."
"Fifth brother," Old Man Huang said soothingly, "don't argue with him, just agree."
It will be no more than six months; he can afford to wait.
If you push someone too far, who knows what kind of trouble might result? It's always better to leave them some room to maneuver.
These words displeased Chief Huang, but he didn't say anything more.
Circumstances dictate his actions; he is now in dire straits and has no choice but to accept his fate.
His nonchalant attitude only made Uncle Huang angrier. "Remember to prepare the money to pay. You've already said what you mean, so don't try to renege on your promise later."
Hearing Uncle Huang say this, Chief Huang remembered that he still had a sum of money to pay back.
But things have come to this point, and he can't even keep his position as clan leader anymore, so why should he have to pay money?
"Fifth Uncle, every wrong has its perpetrator, and every debt its debtor, you see..."
"What am I looking at?" Uncle Huang Wu glanced at the clan chief. "You insisted on paying for this yourself. What, are you trying to renege on your debt now?"
"No, no," Chief Huang felt annoyed but dared not say more. "I'll go prepare the silver right away."
The play ended close to midnight.
Overall, everyone was happy, except for Clan Chief Huang.
The clansmen received the money, and although Liao was not released, she no longer had to worry about being divorced. The clan elders also barely achieved their goals. Only the clan chief, Huang, lost both his wife and his army.
"Mother," Huang Xiaosan asked, somewhat bewildered, "our village chief has just been replaced like this?"
"Not yet," Jiang Nuan shook her head. "Who can say for sure what the future holds?"
Chief Huang is clearly stalling for time; he must have his own plans.
"Mother," Huang Lao Er said somewhat nervously, "Will the clan chief hold a grudge against us for how Grandpa treated us?"
“He definitely holds a grudge,” Jiang Nuan tapped her wrist. “Our clan leader isn’t very magnanimous, otherwise he wouldn’t have locked Liao Shi in the ancestral hall. But we don’t need to be afraid of him. With your grandfather around, he won’t dare to do anything.”
When the old man is gone, their family will rise up, and they won't need to fear any clan leader anymore.
"Oh," Huang Lao Er's face relaxed. "That's good. Mother, let's send Grandpa some good things to help him recover. He must live to be ninety-nine."
“Okay,” Jiang Nuan was amused by her son’s words, “There are a lot of things at home, tomorrow you pack a basket and send it to the old house.”
No matter how bizarre the reason, as long as they know how to respect their elders, that's enough. Jiang Nuan doesn't want to care about anything else.
These days, she has vaguely sensed that the children have a lingering attachment to the old house. They only treat the old house with the respect due to their elders, but nothing more.
Jiang Nuan didn't want to delve into the reasons for this historical issue, and tried her best to quietly resolve it without causing resentment on either side.
However, the effect was not obvious.
Perhaps both parties had become accustomed to their previous way of getting along. Despite Jiang Nuan's repeated efforts, their interactions remained lukewarm, polite yet somewhat distant.
