The Xie family had also thought of this.
When they first started harvesting cabbages, they had to pay a high price and endure all sorts of disdain for the cabbages that were delivered.
She couldn't resist going outside to collect the goods, but as soon as she reached the village entrance, a group of older women stopped her from leaving, saying she was an ungrateful wretch.
Needless to say, that ingrate is definitely his mother.
If her mother hadn't forbade her to argue, she definitely would have fought with those people.
“It’s all in the past,” Jiang Nuan patted her daughter-in-law’s shoulder. “This is the price I paid for my past mistakes that dragged you down. I won’t do it again.”
Having a bad reputation doesn't usually have much of an impact, but you only realize how difficult it is when you need someone's help.
There are always more people who kick someone when they're down than those who offer help when they're in trouble.
They encountered all sorts of setbacks just from harvesting cabbages; I can't even imagine how difficult their situation would be if they were to face a natural disaster or man-made calamity.
Fortunately, it's all in the past.
Their family no longer needs to compromise themselves.
“Yes, that’s all in the past,” Xie said, her eyes a little red. Then she proudly puffed out her chest. “Now our family is one of the most prominent in Huangjiakou. We can easily find a basket of wild vegetables just by going out for a walk.”
It's not that I'm particularly fond of these wild vegetables, but rather that they hold great significance.
"Come to think of it," Huang Lao Er scratched his head, "it seems so."
Even though he was a grown man who hadn't paid attention to these things, he still sensed the changes, especially after the forced labor.
In the past, when I went to the village, even if the people there didn't say anything unpleasant to me, they weren't particularly happy to see me.
Now, they greet each other with smiles from afar, their intimacy is so sweet it's almost unbearable.
“But it must be even harder for the eldest brother,” Huang insisted. “He works every day without time to sleep, and he can’t even eat meat. This is just too cruel to him.”
“Everyone has their own difficulties,” Jiang Nuan sighed. “It’s not easy for anyone to live. You think your older brother is suffering because our family is too well off.”
The eldest son did more work but didn't suffer any grievances. He was neither beaten nor scolded, and he didn't even get a bad look from anyone. Even though the food was a bit shoddy, he didn't go hungry.
Jiang Nuan felt that those people from Juquanlou had gone very lightly; if she were in their shoes, well…
"Is that really the case?" Huang Lao Er scratched his head. "Something just doesn't feel right."
"Something's not right," Jiang Nuan smacked her son on the head, "Who in the family doesn't do chores? Isn't everyone like that?"
After saying that, he ignored his son and called his daughter-in-law to leave together.
"Jiaojiao, why don't we just build a stove here?" Jiang Nuan said, pointing to an open space.
"Building a stove? It only takes seven or eight days, is it worth the trouble?" After a pause, she voiced her concern, "Mom, we only have two iron pots at home. If we bring them over here, how will we feed ourselves?"
"Food is easy to solve. You can go to your uncle's place for a meal first."
"Mother," Xie said softly, expressing her reluctance, "I don't want to eat at other people's houses."
The old house is really not a place I like.
If her mother hadn't frequently visited the old house, she probably would never have gone there in her life.
“Never mind then,” Jiang Nuan sighed, “I’ll think of another way.”
"Mmm," Xie Shi smiled sweetly, rested her head on Jiang Nuan's shoulder, and said softly, "Mother is the best."
I can't bear to put myself in a difficult position at all.
"Jiaojiao," Jiang Nuan hesitated several times before finally speaking, "You don't need to reject the old house. They have no ill intentions towards our family."
