"A woman?" Huang Xiaosi, hiding behind a pillar, exclaimed in surprise.
"It really is a woman," Huang Xiaopang narrowed his eyes. "How could there be a woman in a Taoist temple?"
“Maybe they’ve come to fulfill a vow,” Jiang Yuan said, unsure. “Otherwise, there’s no way to explain it.”
"Hey guys," Huang Xiaosi said eagerly, "shall we go check out the backyard?"
“This isn’t quite right,” Jiang Yuan said hesitantly. “There are definitely people in the backyard.”
"It's alright," Huang Xiaosi said confidently. "As long as you're careful, nothing will happen."
He's done this kind of thing a lot and is quite experienced.
She crouched low and tiptoed into the backyard, cautiously looked around, and then began to stroll slowly.
The backyard was very quiet, but there was a hint of warmth from cooking, clothes drying in the sun, and a faint scent of incense...
"Strange," Huang Xiaopang's eyes showed suspicion, "Don't these Taoist priests do their morning prayers?"
“Morning prayers? That’s not something only monks do,” Huang Xiaosi said dismissively. “Don’t apply the rules of monks to Taoists; they’re not the same thing.”
After saying that, he waved his hand and said, "Let's keep walking forward, and after we've seen that row of houses, we'll go back."
Huang Yi seemed to want to say something, but ultimately remained silent.
He always felt that this Taoist temple was strange, not normal.
Suddenly, there was a creaking sound.
The three of them were so frightened that they immediately covered their heads and squatted down.
Looking up, I saw a woman leaving in a panic.
"Where did this woman come from?" Xiao Si muttered. "What noise did Mei hear from the room?"
“No, we can’t stay here any longer,” Jiang Yuan said in a low voice. “This place is a bit eerie.”
For some reason, he always felt uneasy.
“Let’s go back,” Huang Yi agreed, “It’s just time for lunch.”
“Oh yeah,” Huang Xiaosi rubbed his stomach, stuffed a piece of chestnut cake into his mouth, and gave one to each of the two of them. “Let’s go back and eat first. I’m so hungry. We’ll come back this afternoon.”
He still hadn't given up.
I'm particularly curious about where these women came from.
And so, the three of them came and went quietly without alerting anyone.
Old Man Jiang followed the directions given by others into the mountains, and when he reached the halfway point, he saw the three little ones walking downhill.
Instantly, the small flames shot upwards.
"You still know how to come home?"
"Grandpa," Huang Xiaosi said with a fawning smile, "what brings you here?"
The old man snorted heavily before speaking, "You brats, where have you been gallivanting off to? Don't you even know the time? We haven't eaten a thing while we've been looking for you."
The poor kids who worked on the official road are probably still waiting for their families to bring them food.
"Grandpa, we were wrong," Huang Xiaopang said earnestly. "We shouldn't have been so playful."
"It's normal for you kids your age to be playful," Grandpa Jiang admonished earnestly, "but you can't be without limits. It's already mealtime. What are you waiting for if you don't come home for dinner? To starve?"
The three men were indignant at the harsh words, but none of them dared to utter a sound, as they were in the wrong first.
He followed the old man listlessly, walking back step by step.
When Jiang Nuan saw the three of them, she didn't get angry like the old man. "Little Fourth, Little Fatty, what's going on?"
"Mother," Xiao Si cried out as soon as Jiang Nuan finished speaking, "It's really not our fault today. Some people in the village set dogs on us. There were more than a dozen of them, a dark, menacing group, all of them gleaming with ferocity. If I hadn't run away quickly, you would never have seen your son again."
"Did someone set dogs on you?" Jiang Nuan became nervous. "Quickly, let me see if you have any wounds."
In the days before rabies vaccines, if you were bitten, you could only rely on your own life!
