“I don’t care,” Jiang Chao snorted. “She’s not the wife I’m looking for.”
"This is outrageous!" Jiang Xu slapped his son across the face. "Having a wife is already a blessing, yet he's still being so picky. What are all the old bachelors supposed to think?"
That brat needs to be taught a lesson.
"I don't care," Jiang Chao pouted. "Anyway, I won't marry someone I don't like. If I marry someone I'm tired of looking at, I'd rather stay single. One person can eat their fill and the whole family won't go hungry. There's one less mouth to fight over food."
Upon hearing this, Huang Lao Er was speechless.
After a long silence, he spoke softly, "Cousin, no wonder you're still single!"
Based on this idea alone, if he were to actually get married, he would be doing the girl a disservice.
“Exactly,” Old Mrs. Jiang said unhappily, “She actually said her own wife was stealing her food, she really deserves to be taught a lesson.”
She strongly suspects that there was something wrong with her usual parenting, which led to her grandson having such a bizarre idea.
“I think what Jiang Chao said makes a lot of sense,” Grandpa Jiang said weakly. “His granddaughter-in-law is the person he will spend his whole life with. If he marries someone he can’t stand, he won’t be able to sleep at night.”
“Exactly,” Jiang Chao agreed. “If things don’t work out, wouldn’t that be a waste of the girl’s time?”
"You scoundrel!" Aunt Jiang scolded angrily. "Listen to what you're saying! Are you going to divorce your wife just because she doesn't meet your expectations? We can't do something so heartless."
“So,” Jiang Chao shrugged nonchalantly, “the granddaughter-in-law you find must satisfy me, lest I ruin the reputation of the Jiang family.”
"You brat," Old Master Jiang laughed, "Trying to outsmart your own family? You're asking for a beating, aren't you?"
"You think it's easy to get a wife?" Old Mrs. Jiang sneered. "You make it sound so simple. Go find one yourself. Let me make this clear: if I don't like her, no matter how much you want her, she won't be allowed in the door."
This kid had his own ideas even when he was little, and he's still the same as when he grew up. He even has to meddle in such a big thing as getting married. If other people knew, they would laugh their heads off.
Sure enough, a brat will always be a brat when he grows up!
This kid has always been reckless and ruthless, just like his daughter. He's the kind of person who would hesitate to divorce his wife, but he's actually capable of doing it.
I really owe him something!
“Father, Mother, don’t spoil him,” Aunt Jiang said, then turned to her son. “You good-for-nothing, are you trying to drive me crazy? Look at your cousins, are any of them as bad as you?”
“How is this outrageous?” Jiang Xu retorted. “It’s just a small request. Besides, my cousins’ wives are all to their own satisfaction. You can ask them if you don’t believe me.”
“No, that’s not true,” Huang Lao Er shook his head repeatedly. “As long as it’s someone my mother finds, I’m satisfied.”
“Listen to this,” Aunt Jiang’s face darkened even more, “If only you were half as sensible as Xiaoshu.”
"Are you sure that's true?" Jiang Xu asked through gritted teeth. "I'm on my way to your house."
The threat was blatant, and Huang Lao Er understood it instantly.
His expression changed drastically.
Although he felt he was right, his wife wouldn't think so.
"Auntie," Huang Lao Er complained directly, "my cousin is bullying me!"
"Jiang Chao," Aunt Jiang's sharp eyes shot out like daggers, "if you're really itching for a beating, I'll have your dad loosen up your muscles?"
"Don't be like that," Jiang Chao said with an awkward laugh, "We're almost at Huangjiakou, it wouldn't be good if someone saw us."
“Behave yourself,” Jiang Xu scolded his son, “or I’ll really teach you a lesson.”
When the group arrived at the Huang family's house, Jiang Nuan and her family had already prepared a feast, which was full of meat, mostly fatty meat.
Jiang Nuan herself doesn't really like fatty meat; she feels that lean meat tastes better. But in the entire Huang family, apart from her and Er Niu, who has just learned to feed himself, everyone prefers fatty meat.
The most popular dish at the Huang family is not the soft, juicy, and fragrant Four Happiness Meatballs, but the braised pork!
This observation led her to discover that the definition of deliciousness in this era is very simple, just one word: fragrant!
Of course, it would be even better if you added some spices to make it just the right amount of salty.
"So much meat!" Jiang Chao exclaimed in surprise. "Braised pork, big meatballs, braised pork ribs, lamb chops, lamb trotters, stewed chicken, and fish. It smells so good!"
"Hurry up and sit down to eat," Jiang Nuan said, pointing to an empty seat. "If you're any later, the food will get cold."
“I like it when Auntie is so unceremonious,” Jiang Chao said as she sat down and turned to the two elders in a flattering manner, “Grandpa and Grandma, please sit down too, don’t be shy.”
"You little rascal," Old Mrs. Jiang laughed and scolded, "Does my daughter need you to take care of her?"
“Jiang Chao,” Aunt Jiang said, rubbing her head in exasperation, “you better behave yourself and don’t act recklessly in front of your aunt.”
This child, I'll definitely get a good beating from my husband when we get back!
“I don’t like hearing what you’re saying, sister-in-law,” Jiang Nuan said with a smile. “I only have one nephew, and he’s no different from my son. This is his home, so he can do whatever he wants.”
This child hasn't been disobedient or forgotten his elders; what's wrong with him being lively?
“That’s right,” Jiang Chao smiled smugly. “Mom, did you hear that? This is my home.”
As he spoke, he stood up and helped the two elderly people to their seats, setting out the bowls and chopsticks. "Grandpa and Grandma, is your grandson taking good care of you?"
"Go sit down," Grandma Jiang waved her hand dismissively, "Don't delay your meal."
The meal was lively and cheerful, lasting for about half an hour, before the group finally sat down in the hall to drink tea and disappear.
"Mother," Jiang Nuan said, "why are you so late? Did something happen?"
"Don't even mention it," Grandma Jiang waved her hand. "The trouble that matchmakers bring is just too much to bear. You can't trust people who make a living with their mouths."
"What's going on?" Jiang Nuan asked, puzzled. "Could it be that Jiang Chao's marriage has been arranged?"
"Don't mention that brat anymore," Aunt Jiang said with a sullen face. "Big sister, you don't know, this kid is so arrogant. He wants to find his own wife and says that he's not satisfied with the ones we found and that he's going to ruin the Jiang family's reputation."
"What?" Jiang Nuan laughed. "My nephew has such a good idea?"
“That’s right,” Grandma Jiang said helplessly. “He was a troublemaker when he was a child, and he’s even more troublesome now that he’s grown up.”
When I was a kid, I would just climb trees and fish in the water, occasionally stirring up a hornet's nest, which would only cause trouble for myself. Now, I'm even trying to ruin the reputation of the Jiang family.
“It’s not impossible,” Jiang Nuan shook her head. “He can choose one he likes, and then you can give your opinions. As long as the girl has good character, there’s nothing that’s unacceptable.”
“I think so too,” Grandma Jiang said after taking a sip of tea. “Men can’t afford to lose in this kind of thing. Let him do what he wants. We’ll be there to watch over things and prevent any trouble.”
Taking a breath, Grandma Jiang asked in confusion, "Ya Ya, did you bring us here because of something?"
