Chapter 4 Heartache

Hearing what Boss Huang said, Jiang Nuan immediately realized it was the original owner's fault. She was speechless and helpless. "You believe me when I say so? If I said there was gold on the ground, would you go and pick it up?"

“We’ll go if Mom tells us to,” Huang Laoda said sheepishly, scratching his head. “Anyway, Mom can’t be wrong.”

Sensing the seriousness in Huang Laoda's words, Jiang Nuan was convinced; she was truly convinced.

She was really curious about how Jiang had raised such an obedient son; even a pyramid scheme couldn't have brainwashed him so thoroughly.

No wonder these people treated her like an empress dowager; it was all thanks to Lady Jiang.

She had a premonition that the Jiang family had done far more than just these demonic acts.

Rubbing her flushed face, Jiang Nuan explained guiltily, "I feel perfectly fine now, you don't need to be so careful. Don't worry, nothing will happen."

"Really?" Huang Xiaowu asked, tears welling up in his eyes, "Mother really won't die?"

"No, I promise."

"No need for Mother's guarantee, Mother wouldn't lie to me," Huang Xiaowu said softly.

"Mother, are you really not going to die?" Old Huang asked in surprise, even though he had already prepared himself for grief.

A child with a mother is a treasure, a child without a mother is just a weed. He couldn't even imagine what would happen to the whole family if his smart, strong, and wise mother passed away.

"I've told you so many times, no, are you trying to drive me crazy?" Jiang Nuan glared at Boss Huang. "Don't ask again, or I'll hit you."

Upon hearing this, Huang the eldest immediately apologized, "It's my fault, Mother, hit me to vent your anger."

Well, whatever she said would be wrong. Jiang Nuan refused to speak again and returned to the main room with a cold face.

Seeing this, the others followed eagerly, like silly huskies trying to please their owners, looking adorably foolish.

Jiang Nuan was also helpless, not knowing how to face these overly enthusiastic new family members, so she could only put on a cold and aloof face.

The baby is suffering inside, but the baby can't say it. Facing the Huang family, Jiang Nuan has no confidence at all.

In this strange and awkward atmosphere, time passed slowly.

"Mother, dinner's ready. Come and wash your hands." Outside the hall, Madam Wang carried a basin of water over and placed it on the table.

With a sigh, Jiang Nuan slowly walked over and sat on the stool. She tested the water; it was just the right temperature. How thoughtful!

How could there be such a filial daughter-in-law? How did Jiang manage to brainwash her so successfully? Jiang Nuan once again posed this soul-searching question.

Just when Jiang Nuan thought this was the limit, Wang Shi once again shattered her worldview. She held Jiang Nuan's hand and carefully and gently washed her hands, from the back of her hand to her fingers.

“I’m fine on my own,” Jiang Nuan said awkwardly, pulling her hand away from Wang’s.

"Mother, was I too rough? Did I hurt you? It's all my fault, I should have been more careful." Wang immediately apologized.

“No,” Jiang Nuan forced a stiff smile, “I want to wash my hands myself.”

"Mother, it's all my fault, please punish me." Wang knelt down in fear to admit her mistake.

“You did nothing wrong,” Jiang Nuan closed her eyes resignedly. “Here’s your hand. Wash it, then we’ll eat.”

She realized that the Huang family's thought process was different from hers and different from that of ordinary people.

Upon hearing this, Ms. Wang was overjoyed and hurriedly stood up, washing her hands even more carefully, attentively, and gently.

Jiang Nuan felt like every second was an eternity; she felt that conscience, this luxury, was getting further and further away from her.

Needless to say, while she intellectually condemned her own depravity for being served like this, her body was unusually honest, and she had already closed her eyes in enjoyment.

After washing her hands, Wang cleaned the table, and the whole family began to eat.

For dinner, we had wild vegetable porridge. The porridge was so thin you could see your reflection in it. The rice was brown rice, the kind where the husks hadn't been completely removed.

Jiang Nuan was about to get a bowl when Xie Shi came over with a bowl of steamed egg custard. "Mother, there are only three eggs left today. You can eat this bowl of steamed egg custard first, and I'll go make you a bowl of noodles."

“No need,” Jiang Nuan’s lips twitched. “This steamed egg custard is for the children. I’ll have porridge with you.”

"That won't do. Mother has a weak stomach. This porridge is too coarse. She can't eat it," said Huang Laoda nervously.

"Shut up, I don't want steamed egg custard today." Jiang Nuan took the bowl, picked up a spoon, and gave each of the children who were looking at her expectantly a spoonful. In the blink of an eye, the bowl was empty.

Just as Jiang Nuan was about to put down the empty bowl, Huang Xiaosi licked his lips and said, "Mom, give me the bowl. I'll add some water so I can taste the egg."

"Fourth Brother, you can have mine." Huang Xiaowu glanced reluctantly at the steamed egg in the porridge, then spoke with his eyes closed.

Huang Xiaosi smiled and patted his sister's head, then shook his head in refusal, "Xiaowu, you eat by yourself. Fourth brother will drink the egg water. Egg water is more fragrant than egg custard."

After Huang Xiaosi finished speaking, he deftly poured water into the bowl, took a sip, and smacked his lips in enjoyment, "So delicious!"

Seeing this, Jiang Nuan was a little anxious. She really wanted to immediately possess Jiang's memories and improve the Huang family's life without leaving any flaws. Now, she could only try little by little.

She vaguely remembered that Jiang Shi ate alone, but she didn't expect it to be this outrageous. Xiao Wu treated a bowl of egg water as if he had eaten delicacies. She didn't find it funny, but rather felt sad.

"Second daughter-in-law, scoop out a few ladles of flour and make a pot of dumplings to nourish the family." After a pause, Jiang Nuan took out five copper coins. "Go buy some eggs and make a pot of egg drop soup."

Hearing this, Xie was tempted, but still gritted her teeth and refused, "Mother, the flour at home should be saved for you to nourish your body, it can't be used indiscriminately."

“Yes, eggs are so precious, we should leave them for Mother to eat alone,” Huang Lao Er chimed in.

“Mother knows you are filial,” Jiang Nuan’s tone softened considerably, “but you are all so thin and frail, you could be blown away by a gust of wind. It breaks my heart to see you like this. Be good, have a good meal to nourish your bodies, otherwise I can’t eat anything.”

When Jiang Nuan said this, she felt so jealous that she didn't dare to look up. She was a single, strong woman with no children, and she applied the kind of things she had seen in TV dramas to the Huang family.

Unexpectedly, it turned out to be a lucky accident.

“Mother, you always love us so much,” Huang Laoda sniffed. “We won’t eat it all; we’ll save it all for you to nourish your body. Only when you’re here will we have someone to care for us, and only then will our family have hope for the future.”

“Yes,” Huang Lao Er chimed in, “Mother, take good care of yourself. We’ll work hard to earn money so that she can live to be a hundred years old.”

“I can do embroidery to earn money,” Wang replied.

Not to be outdone, Ms. Xie said, "I can weave bamboo baskets to sell, and I can also weave bamboo mats."

"Mom, I can cut pig feed," Huang Xiaowu said cutely.

“Me,” Huang Xiaosi scratched his ear, looking a little anxious, as he didn’t seem to have any particular skills, “I can go into the water and catch fish.”

Jiang Nuan was heartbroken to see the building leaning so far.

"I knew it would turn out like this." She muttered to herself listlessly, then clenched her fist, coughed lightly, and said, "Alright, enough of this nonsense. Second son's wife, hurry up and cook a pot of noodles. Don't make me repeat myself."
