"Did the Huang family bully my eldest sister?" Huang's younger brother asked nervously.
“Unlikely,” Wang’s mother shook her head. “My daughter-in-law’s mother is a kind person and wouldn’t bully anyone. Besides, she’s not afraid of being lectured and taught rules. No one can say that a mother-in-law is wrong in teaching her daughter-in-law.”
After a pause, the Queen Mother spoke weakly, "I'm afraid it's your sister causing trouble."
“That can’t be right,” Huang Dadi couldn’t help but retort. “My sister isn’t that kind of person.”
"It's too early to say that," Wang's mother said with genuine concern. "You haven't seen it. Both your sister and brother-in-law are dressed in silk, and they are different from us peasants. They are like the young masters and ladies of wealthy families in the county."
"Isn't this better?" Huang asked, puzzled. "It's a good thing that my sister can live a good life, why would she cause trouble?"
Only someone with a brain full of water would do that!
“I’m really afraid she’ll do something reckless,” said Wang’s mother, expressing her concerns. “Your eldest sister has never been a bright person. She shrinks back when she encounters someone powerful, but gets arrogant when someone is gentle. She’s really hard to handle.”
She actually preferred to send her daughter to her formidable mother-in-law, so that although she would suffer a bit, she wouldn't cause any major trouble.
If it were a family with a gentle temperament, their daughter's fussiness would eventually ruin the relationship.
“Okay,” Mr. Wang said, having some understanding of his daughter. “Talk to her properly and don’t let her ruin her good life.”
Mr. Wang was very satisfied with his daughter's marriage.
The Huang family wasn't well-off, but they were still much better off than our family. At least their daughter always came back safely every year and brought a little something with her, though it wasn't much, it was a token of their affection.
Several girls in the village died within two years of getting married. If a girl is doing well, then she's considered to have married well.
"Absolutely. If we bring disaster upon the Huang family, our sins will be immense."
After lunch, Wang's mother called her daughter to her room.
After speaking softly and with concern, she casually asked, "You don't look well. Did something happen to you?"
Wang Shi, caught off guard by her own mother, immediately vented all her dissatisfaction with her husband's family, "Mother, after so many years of being married into the Huang family, they still treat me like an outsider. I'm suffering!"
After hearing her daughter's account, Wang was so angry that her chest began to tremble. Before she could lash out, she heard her daughter's tactless words.
She immediately slapped him across the face. "You still have the nerve to complain? I think the Huang family must have been cursed for eight lifetimes to marry a troublemaker like you. Why don't you live a good life?"
"You feel that no one in your husband's family respects you, why don't you ask yourself what you've done that earns respect?"
“The whole family works together to make a living, but you’re the only one who always looks gloomy, always feeling uncomfortable and unhappy, and always feeling wronged. Who are you trying to annoy? It’s a good thing you’re not my daughter-in-law, or I would have sent you back to your parents’ home long ago.”
“Mother, how can you say that?” Wang was both anxious and aggrieved. “I didn’t do anything.”
"You didn't do anything?" The Queen Mother was furious and started whipping the child with a rattan cane. "I told you you didn't do anything."
They worked on it for a while, until they got tired and stopped.
People outside rushed over after hearing the commotion, but the door was bolted shut. "Mother, what are you doing in there?"
"It's nothing, a mouse just suddenly got in, and I'm shooing it away."
Wang sobbed and wiped away her tears, but dared not refute him.
She dared not speak, for her own mother was glaring at her with a rattan cane raised.
"Really nothing?"
"No!" The Queen Mother's voice was clear and decisive, without the slightest hesitation.
In the end, Brother Wang left, scratching his head.
“I already told you not to go,” Wang’s father shook his head. “There’s no point in you going anyway.”
"Brother-in-law, aren't you going to go and take a look?" Wang Dadi asked dejectedly.
It's clearly the sound of someone being slapped; even a fool could tell.
But he found that his brother-in-law didn't care at all.
Upon hearing this, Boss Huang explained, "It's not appropriate."
"That's true, we should definitely be more discreet about it." After all, the son-in-law is considered an outsider.
Inside the room, the mother did not let her daughter off the hook, "Do you know your mistake?"
"Mother," Wang Shi looked at her mother with a misty gaze, "was I really wrong?"
Upon hearing this, the Queen Mother laughed in fury, "You think you're wrong?"
"The Huang family is marrying a daughter-in-law, not an ancestor. We don't expect you to be of great use, but at least don't expect us to serve you. You start sulking and ignoring people at the slightest dissatisfaction. Who do you think you are? How dare a useless little wife act like this?"
"I……"
"Shut up and listen to me," the Queen Mother said mercilessly. "And today, I was wondering why you chose this time to come back. So you were just showing off! What are you trying to show off? That your husband cares about you the most, or that your in-laws can't control you? Or that you have our backing you up when the Huang family wrongs you?"
As she spoke, the Queen Mother couldn't help herself and started slapping herself again, "Why don't you just fly to the heavens? You've only had a few days of good life and you're already itching for a ride, you shameless bastard, aren't you?"
"What did I tell you when you left home? I told you to be filial to your parents-in-law, did you do that? I told you to put your husband first, did you listen? I told you not to be pretentious, and how did you do that? Do you think anyone owes you something?"
As he spoke, he became even more ruthless.
She felt that it was better to teach her a lesson and correct her behavior before she made any serious mistakes, rather than to cause trouble and be divorced later.
"Mother," Wang Shi cried out in pain, "Don't hit me anymore, I was wrong, I know I was wrong."
"You only realize your mistake now? Too late!" Wang's mother continued, "You better remember this: even your parents don't spoil you, so no one else has that responsibility. Being good to you is their duty, and if they're not, you have to put up with it. You dare to throw a tantrum over such a small thing? Your mother-in-law isn't even dead yet, so why are you crying like that?"
"You think your family background is bad? You think you're incompetent? Let me tell you, you're absolutely right. If we divorce you, the Huang family could find someone a hundred times better than you with their eyes closed. Don't think your current position is so secure."
“Your mother-in-law and husband are kind, but they are not without temper. If you anger them, no one can save you.”
"Don't think that having a child makes you a hero. It's your duty. If you don't have children, who will feed and care for you for free!"
"You still say your in-laws treat you like an outsider? Don't you feel ashamed? Look at the gold bracelet on your wrist, the silk clothes you're wearing, and the gold hairpin in your hair. What family is so stupid as to give all these good things to an outsider?"
"Not only are you stupid, but you also have no conscience. You've fed so much good stuff to dogs and they've even tamed them. Giving it to you is a complete waste!"
"You heartless bastard!"
By the end, the Queen Mother was exhausted and leaned against the wall, panting heavily.
"Mom, am I really that bad?"
Wang was so dizzy from being scolded by her mother that she was still very unwilling.
According to her own mother, she was truly worthless, and the Huang family was losing out big time by marrying her.
"I'm still your own mother," the Queen Mother sneered, "I didn't dare say anything too outrageous for fear you'd try to kill yourself."
If the village women found out, they would definitely scold their daughter until she questioned the meaning of life.
